1. The Isle of Everywhere by Gong (from the album You). Ah, such memories...
2. These days I just leave them in their cases, then when I find them a few months later it is like getting a new bass again!
3. Our first gig at a new-to-us venue, good amount of space, decent load in and parking area, but not a whole lot of people (apparently most of the regulars had gone to a party in London). We were happy with our playing, but the sets were shorter than usual which left us feeling a bit unsatisfied, but at least I was home by midnight.
4.
Best way to buy, IMO... as long as you have the money. Turn up, like it muchly, and like it enough to commit there and then. Job done.
Yup, but it only works if you have access to a reasonably well stocked music shop. PMT Oxford were very helpful, letting me compare several basses for an hour or more and plugged them through an Ashdown amp similar to the ones I use so that I could get a realistic idea of how they would sound through my own rig. After last night's gig, our guitarist said 'You might as well sell your other basses, that is the one for you'.
5. Here's the proof, rather fuzzy pic from wife's phone of me with the LPB jazz.
6. Thank you for the comments, the bass sounds great through my ABM 500 and Barefaced Super twin, lots of power and a great mid range crunch. Used it for both sets this evening.
7. I admit I was feeling wild and anarchistic and deliberately broke not only every bass style rule in the book but also half a lifetime if deliberately avoiding maple boards. Last one I had was on a white precision in the early 80s, looked like an anaemic ghost! But the LPB and maple is sexy in a slightly kinky kind of way.
8. I thought I might get away with that, but here is a quick pic taken before going through the setup. It didn't much, slight tweak on the trussrod, pickups raised a gnats and a turn or two on the saddles to set the intonation. I'm planning on using it at tonight's gig (The Wheatsheaf in Didcot is anyone's local and at a loose end this evening).
9. I went into Oxford today with my wife who had some business to do there, so I wandered along the Cowley Road to PMT. They humoured me by allowing me to play various basses, from Squier Dimension to US Jazz Special via VM and CV Jazz Squiers. Somehow I ended up with a new Fender standard Jazz (mex) in lake placid blue with a maple neck & fingerboard. Sounds and feels great, I'll probably use it at our gig tomorrow night.
10. I had quite a collection of IM&RW from issue one onwards, all dumped by either my parents when they retired and moved or by my first wife when we split up. Took up a fair amount of space for the sake of a bit of nostalgia. (the magazines, not the ex...I think)
11.
>>>>>> Try phoning the pub & asking?
Well yes, the booking etc has been made direct by the pub but I reckon that anyone who has played there will have more idea about the amount of gear required than the pub who just see boxes that emit noise!
12. Not too far from Swindon, two of our guys live there (but one did just call to ask me where Didcot was!)
13. I know there are people here from South Oxfordshire, have any of you played at The Wheatsheaf in Didcot? We are there this Saturday (last minute booking) and it would help to know how big the place is, as we have two sets of backline & PA, one small and the other larger. Any ideas which would be more appropriate? It's not a modular system, it's one or the other. Thanks
14. Are you around daytimes? I might sneak over to Swindon if so, not so easy in the evenings for me. Do you know when you are you playing at Radfest? We are on 10 pm til midnight Saturday.
15. I might have to do that, though I can't imagine how i can justify buying another bass so soon after the last one. I think we're playing on the same circuit as you guys around Swindon and West Oxfordshire, but don't think we've bumped into each other yet. edit: but we will at Radcot in May, both on the Radfest bill.
16. I'm really going to regret clicking on that. Less than 20 miles away, too. Get thee behind me....
17. Good looking bass you've got there. If my local PMT get any 4 strings in I could be seriously tempted.
18. Cash also can be risky as there are a lot of forged notes out there. I sold one of my bikes last year and the buyer paid 6k in cash. I had a rather unsettling time at the bank as their machine flagged up a couple of hundred quids worth of potentially dodgy fifty quid notes. All finally proved to be ok but the bank told me it is quite common for any large sum in cash to contain a few fakes.
19. Daevid has meant so much to me, it is heartening to realize I was not alone in my immersion in his wonderful world. I still treasure the letters I had from him 40 years ago.
20. Certainly not normal, I have two of them and neither does that.
21. Yup, I am always reading here about people changing pick ups, amps, cabs FX etc to cure a thin sound when all they really need is a heavier gauge of strings. My standard set of 50-105 and there is a word of difference compared to 40-100.
22. I've heard a few...recently 'are you going to play or just sit there talking to your missus?' reply...'she's not my wife, she's our singer and we're sorting out what to play'. 'Well tell yer missus to bloody well get on with it then'.
23.
Yes well, that's because you're a bloody hippy. Get a job!!
Caught out!
24.
Congrats on your new addition. Looks the biz. Precision getting too heavy for you now?
The Precision is still my front line bass, growling away on roundwounds, but the JCB is surprisingly snarly as well.
