Thanks for the help - I'm still favouring the tort, just looks more interesting than a sheet of black plastic - but it does look pretty good with either. Looks terrible with the original white, though! I can change from one plate to another in under 5 minutes, so I experiment a little.

This is what it looks like with a tort guard - not necessarily this one, as I could swap a couple around from my other Jazz basses.
  3. I've been playing for 45 years and have never used effects, nor has anyone suggested that I should.

I've a small stack of black, white, & one tort Jazz scratch plates right here and will see which hits the spot for me once I've finished my cuppa.

I've got a tort plate that'll fit lying around, I'll try just laying it over the black one and see how the bass looks. At least they're easy to change on a Jazz!

I've had Jazz basses for decades, after initial rumblings on a short scale Vox I managed to scrape the money together for a Framus Jazz bass, which was a good bass for about £100 some 45 years ago. Since then, I've almost always had at lease one Jazz & currently have four, but something in my head keeps telling me to try other basses. The only long term keeper I have is a Precision! Fenders are so common and boring in a way, but I have never had a bad one. Dull but reliable.

Thanks, I like the black scratchplate as well, though I usually change them to tort. I'll leave this the way to is for now. It came with the original white plate as well. The bass has a very comfortable neck, as well. It might be that after 45 years or more of playing, I am finally coming round to the idea that the Jazz bass is my perfect instrument!

Yet Another New Bass Day I last posted in this section a month ago to announce the arrival of an Ibanez SR1200 to my collection. That left my care yesterday having been played once during my brief custody, and replaced by a Fender Jazz US Special. I just have to face up to the fact that I am not really made for exotic active basses, and should stick to standard Jazz & Precision basses from now on. Obviously,y it is inevitable that I will deviate from this sensible course, but such is life. I acquired the Jazz after seeing it advertised on Facebook by a chap who wanted to swap it for a Premium Ibanez. As I had one doing nothing, I decided to get in touch, yesterday he came over to our house and we sat in the garden with an amp & cab, talked bass stuff and tried each other's basses. The result was satisfactory for us both - he prefers Ibanez and I prefer Fender, so a straight swap was agreed. Looking at the prices of each, it was a fair deal for us both, and a pleasant hour or so chatting and playing in the evening sun. I now have four Jazz basses (though I am selling the active one) and only one Precision…. Obligatory picture of the new recruit:
  9. Well yes, and I am sure we wouldn't have used it had we been able to see about seven years into the future. It seemed disrespectful, especially considering our presenter's friendship with her and her husband.
  10. That would be beyond creepy! It didn't feel right when we used for the Princess Di piece.
  11. I'm playing at my daughter's wedding in a few weeks - I can guarantee that we won't be playing that one!
  12. Didn't the Police also do that slightly creepy one about stalking? I remember we used it for an item about Princess Diana when I was working with Clive James. Part of it was played over footage of her and covers of magazines with her face on it carefully thrown into shot by myself and another researcher on the programme. Years before her death, of course.
  13. All too true, hopefully no one will remember that when we play it, though. It's a quick 3 minute filler, useful while recharging the brain ready for another lengthy one.
  14. My current Grateful Dead cover band won't play Mexicali Blues as it contains the line 'Instead I've got a bottle and a girl who's just fourteen' for fairly obvious reasons. Given our average age, if we changed to 'just fourteen' 'to just forty' we'd still look like cradle snatchers! Mind you, we frequently play 'Me & My Uncle' (written by John Phillips of the Mamas & Papas) which is about gambling, a gunfight, stolen gold and the final line sees the death of the uncle 'I left his dead donkey there at the side of the road'. I have the feeling we'd rather be seen as potential thieves & murdered than child abusers, but in truth, I don't think many people take lyrics too literally.
  15. The owner of the bar drums for us - he's good! I was only asked about tomorrow's gig late this afternoon, unfortunately the guitarist had already got plans for tomorrow.
  16. Not enough notice, unfortunately, turns out our guitarist has already got something arranged (nothing to do with music)
  17. I've just been offered another paid gig tomorrow - can't complain about that!
  18. I've got a white Precision and a white Jazz - both have tort guards, wouldn't look right with anything else. Both have rosewood boards, though. Yours needs something dark to give it a bit of contrast, I reckon.
  19. I bought this recently from the original owner and it is a lovey bass in perfect condition - however, I am running out of space and trying to cut down to a core of 3 or 4 Fenders, so this one has to go. Standard 34” scale, active pre-amp, a bass which sounds as good as it looks, but I must sell before I get used to it! The price included the Ibanez standard case for the Premium range, a semi hard case. Even the original booklet is included. I paid £600.00 collected from the buyer and will sell for the same. Whoever buys this will not regret it (unless they are as tight for space as I am!)
  20. This bass has now been sold I have to move this on, as it is in my way and I haven't played it for over a year, so have reduced the asking price by £250 to £1250 I bought this in January 2020, it has been used for one rehearsal and one gig since then. It is is in perfect condition, not a mark or sign of wear on it. I have not played it at home, so no dings or dents from random bits of furniture - it is in the same condition as I bought it. This bass has a mahogany body with bocote top (a wood I’ve never heard of, but it looks good!), fretboard is rosewood with abalone dots, and the hardware is black. Two Sandberg trapez pickups and Sandberg active preamp. The bass sounds and feels wonderful - I didn’t intend to buy another bass when I saw it, just picked it up to kill time, but soon realised I had to have it. To play and hear this bass is to need it! Several people have queried what looks like drops of wood stain on the light wood in the centre of the bass. I have discussed this with Sandberg and they assure me that this is not stain, as they do not use stain on these basses, just a clear satin finish to protect the wood. The dark marks in the lighter sapwood is simply the way in which the tree has grown, with a few parts of the dark outer wood mixing with the light sapwood. Comes with a Sandberg padded bag, but fits a standard Hiscox case (not included) I would much rather meet any prospective buyer so they can try it out properly and am reluctant to trust this beauty to a courier. I live near Oxford, please get in touch to arrange a time & place to meet and try this bass if you are seriously interested in buying. I paid £1950 for this piece of bass nirvana, and will sell it for £1350.
  21. That's probably why those flexibly mounted croc clips used to hold wires while you solder them are usually known as third hands!
  22. That's a good point! Also good to see Pekka Pohjola on the list - I saw him and Mike Howlett on the same night when Wigwam supported Gong in the mid 70s.
  23. Good to see Mike Howlett get a mention in the original post. I don't recognise 95% of the other names in this thread, though.
