Some VERY good news at last - live music back by the Spring?
FinnDave replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I've done a couple of pub gigs in the last month and have a couple more coming up. None were in a shed! -
The advert does state that this bass is a one-off, so if we call put a few quid in, we could buy and have it destroyed before it has a chance to breed,

Best wishes & positive thoughts, my friend. Dave

I have a few Fenders, as well as a Sandberg & an Ibanez - both of which are good basses but I rarely play them, whereas the Fenders get played every day (well, not all of them, but at least one a day). Fender is a known quantity, you can get parts for them anywhere & any guitar tech can set them up correctly in minutes. Fender are also much easier to sell if you change your mind. I had my Sandberg advertised on here for over a year with no luck at all. It is now cased and forgotten - a £2,000.00 waste of space!

Dream basses that left you disappointed

First expensive I bought was new Guild B301 in the 70s, it was very disappointing. Sounded good but not easy to play terrible neck dive. I should have bought a Precision - that's what I wanted back then but the curvaceous Guild seduced me! -
Used my RM 800 head at last night's gig, shape feature off, mid and upper mid sightly boosted. Fender Precision, flats, Barefaced super compact. Sounds fine to my ears, and the guitarist's, who's not slow to tell me if the bass doesn't sound right. The RM is my main amp now as I have sold the ABM 600 & Super Twin cab.

I took my Precision out to a rehearsal yesterday, first time I've played it for months and the first time with this band. I have a few basses and the others comment on their appearance, but yesterday, nearly everyone commented on the sound of the Precision - full, rich, bass - they loved it. Makes me wonder why I've bought so many basses over the last few years when I had the P all the time! I'll be gigging it one Saturday with a different band, and the guitarist in that one often says that if I sell that Precision, he'll have to kill me. I think I'd probably let him if I did anything that dumb! Simple, unexciting, basic - but just perfect. Though to keep this on-topic, I clearly remember my first P bass, bought new in the early 80s. Bloody thing had some random fault that meant it could cut out mid song without warning, usually just for a few seconds. That was a bass I'd waited years to get, and it was definitely disappointing! -
I work the other way round - I think in terms of which bass my car is. I had a Mitsubishi Outlander diesel for a couple of years that was definitely a Fender Precision, but unlike a P bass, it became unreliable, so was traded in against a Mitsubishi ASX diesel, which is a Jazz Bass through & through.

I wanted an Ibanez 4 string with Nordstrand pick ups ever since selling my six string version - too heavy for 2-3 hour sets and even after a year of playing them, I still got lost on the sixes. Picked up a VGC Ibanez SR 1200, same woods, finish, pick ups and bridge as my old SR 1206 but lighter and with the proper number of strings. Brought it home, tuned it, plugged it in and….. It was everything I've wanted in a bass - at least as good as my Sandberg Panther Special. I might talk to John East about putting one of his pre-amps in it (I'm addicted to his sweepable mid-range) but in every respect, it's perfect. I know this doesn't really fit the thread, but with someone saying earlier that dreaming of an Ibanez was indicative of very low aspirations, let me tell them they are wrong. -
You must surely like at least ONE song of theirs

Do I really have to? (I do my best to ignore the Dead's versions of Beatles songs) -

I thought that was standard practice for blues gigs, along with calling a song and then launching into something different, and calling the wrong key. -

Just been offered a paid gig in the nearest town, just me & guitarist (bar owner likes to sit in in drums - he is a good drummer). Two weeks time. I phoned the guitarist and he's up for it. We've not played together for about 8 months, so I asked him if he wanted to get together before the gig. "Nah, we'll just wing it", he said 😎 -

I'm playing at my daughter's wedding in August with a band that no longer exists, but some of us will get together in time for the wedding! That assumes that the bride and groom can actually get there - they are currently locked down in a tower block in Vietnam as one person in the 38 storey building has tested positive for C-19. -
Bands you once hated but are now coming round to

I don't really hear any music by chance, never have the radio on at home or in my car, watch very little TV, don't work, so have little exposure to music in public. I only get to hear what I choose to hear. I'm not claiming that's any better or worse than what other people do, only that that is how I live. A lot of the time I don't listen to anything in the conventional sense, but I can recall complete songs in my head - the ultimate private listening experience! -

I'm the opposite, the older I get (63 now) the less inclined I am to spend time exploring new music. -

Looks like I'm playing again this afternoon, local blues afternoon. My former bandmate from the Wirebirds & I will play a few numbers, always enjoy playing with Al - he's anything but predictable! -

Well, that was good gig! First one for more months than I can remember and the release of all that pent up energy was incredible. Good audience up and dancing (and yes, we played only Grateful Dead music - the Dead used to say they were first and foremost a dance band). Only complaint - too short - we only had a one hour slot and it was gone in a flash.
