Unless you're speaking to a member of the non bass-playing public, who will have said "Jaco who?"

I always take a couple of basses to a gig, had to use the spare once in recent years, when the Jazz bass I had been using fell (with its Hercules stand) through the drums during a break. 75% severed the G string. Pulled the Precision out of the back the car and carried on. My brand new amp had failed earlier in the same gig, but again I had a spare. Won't use Hercules stands again, though.

I have never played a five string, but after 45 years of playing 4 strings, I spent a year (autumn 2018 - 2019) playing only six string basses. At the end of the year, I decided it wasn't for me and now have only 4 strings again. I don't regret giving the sixes a good go, though, it was the only way to find out if I was suited to them.

Whats the most ridiculous thing you have been asked for on stage?

Should have told him you didn't know it, only the JJ Cale song of the same name. That's enough to confuse most of them! -
Not yet! I usually give everything a couple of gigs before I decide whether it's a keeper or not, and at the current rate, that could take a while!

I have no idea what was going on in my head while I was asleep last night, but when I woke up I had an irresistible urge to listen to some Kevin Ayers. Now, Mr Ayers has written some very good songs, but the one I wanted to hear again isn't really his finest work, even if it does (probably) feature Sad Barret on guitar and backing vocals. Listen if you dare, but you'll have it in your head for days!

For a pint? Well, it's pushing it a bit, but if you insist...

The banana is great - combination of the Dead and early Gong!

There's a connection between Yamaha basses and Hook Norton brewery? I'm intrigued...

Must be about 15 years since I was clean shaven, and that was only for a few weeks. I'd feel lost without a hairy face! -

Beard oil is a rip off - my wife bought me some and I only used it once. Coconut oil works well, and is much cheaper! -
That's great, if I didn't already have a standard stealie tattoo, I'd use this for one!
-
I'm saving that!! A Yamaha stealie!!
-
Could be, but I think my fingers just f*cked up.

It certainly is! It's so comfortable to play (used for the last Grateful Dudes' gig - about 2 1/2 hours - and no hand cramp at all - first time I've got through a long one without some pain) and it has a wonderful tone - most individual and beautiful.

I knew next to nothing about Sandbergs until I had some time to kill in early January and wandered into Oxford PMT. I had no intention of buying anything, but walked out an hour or so later nearly two grand lighter and carrying a Sandberg Panther special. Probably the best bass I've ever played, even better than my Alembic Epic. I have to ration my time playing it as I still love my Fenders (and now my Yamaha), but it really is the most comfortable and best sounding bass I've ever played.

Think I'll add another Grateful Dead song to my list - Friend of the Devil would go down well in the average church! -
The model number was a typo, honest guv! Just played it at home (obviously!) so far, but it was going through my small rig (Rootmaster 800 & Super Compact) and sounded good - pretty much what I'd expect a PJ style to sound like, chunkier than a Jazz but a bit brighter than a Precision. I wasn't looking for one (wasn't even aware of them) but was offered it as an exchange on here and everything fell into place. The seller is an excellent chap, both basses were collected from their old homes on Monday and delivered to their new owners on Tuesday morning. And it seems we are both happy - couldn't be better. My 'bass space' is now full, with one for every day of the week. Any more basses now means one has to go or I need to make structural alterations to the house!
-
I'm hoping to hang on to it for a bit longer, but my record's not too good either! I've swapped both of my six strings for ivory white Jazz style basses, pure by co-incidence.

I'd never played a Yamaha bass until yesterday, when I received a BB 1204x in exchange for an Ibby six string I had been trying to sell for some time. Played along to a couple of my usual live Grateful Dead CDs yesterday afternoon and it sounds and feels good. No idea where it fits in the Yamaha hierarchy, but it's a decent bass.

If I really had it in for them, I'd insist on them all staying for this before they rush down the pub https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1974/05/21/playin-in-the-band?source=90397 -

I've been thinking about this on and off ever since a friend of mine was taken by cancer. He was a deservedly popular chap in the village and the church was rammed. His casket was carried in to 'Stairway to Heaven' and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. I'm fairly sure the Grateful Dead's 'Ripple' would have to feature in mine, and a couple of others, but it's hard deciding on which of the many versions to choose! Hopefully I'll narrow the choice down before I go. -
What have you got against slap bass?
FinnDave replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I doubt that I can either, but I haven't tried, it doesn't feature in any of the music I play. -
Hopefully, it'll be worth it.I'll have another 4 string to play instead of the now redundant sixes.
-
I think I might have failed (again) as I have agreed to a bass swap to get shot of my final six string bass. It's all wrapped up in the corner waiting for the courier tomorrow.
