The day is still young...

After 45 years or so playing bass, the only thing I can be certain of is that I don't like maple fingerboards. At least, I have never kept one for long, but knowing me, that won't stop me buying another one!

2019 Gear Abstinence Challenge (Updated with 'rules')
FinnDave replied to Sibob's topic in General Discussion
Certainly wasn't me, I bought a cab and a jazz bass. I had sold an identical cab and an identical jazz bass in the first quarter of the year, though, so technically they were only lost and replaced... -
Fair point. There is nothing in my life that gets a higher priority than gigging, but that is a reflection on the fact that my family is small, my daughters grown & flown, and my social life mainly involves musicians.
-
My main aim, gear-wise, this year is to get down to four basses. I currently have five, two are for sale and then I might buy another to bring the total up to four. Or I might settle for three for now (a Precision and two Jazzes). Or, if no one buys my six strings, I'll be stuck with five.
-
I'm probably out already, I had already arranged to buy and have fitted another East pre-amp into a Jazz bass I've had for years back in December.
-
I honestly can't think of anything I'd rather be doing on a Saturday (or any other day of the week) night than gigging.
-
You go first, my brain is mush this morning, never can get this sleeping after a gig lark right!
-
Guitarist had to go home to fetch the PA mixer last night - luckily he lives just a couple of miles from the venue, for me it would have been 45 mins each way.
-
Yeah, I know - not sure whether that's a blessing or a curse!
-
I nearly cracked and bought another Casady bass a couple of days ago - now I'll have to wait all year!
-
Can I send Mrs Krow out to work to fund new bass gear for me instead? We could probably work out some kind of reciprocal arrangement involving Mrs Dave - play it right an neither need know about it!
-
Strictly speaking, a god tribute, but that's good enough for me!
-
For example, if you were playing in a Hendrix tribute band and the guitarist was careless with the lighter fluid and burnt your bass, I reckon you should be allowed to replace it without dropping out of the thread.
-
Basses should be considered consumables the way some people treat them!
-
Nearly 12 hours into 2020 and I haven't bought anything!

Jazz basses - they all sound the same
FinnDave replied to hooky_lowdown's topic in General Discussion
My Jazz bass sounded like it usually does at last night's gig. Maybe it'll sound different next time out as it's another decade. -
Played a NYE gig in a large pub on the edge of Swindon. Good crowd (loading in was not too bad, getting everything out at the end wasn't so easy). We played three sets between eight and eleven and got paid fairly well. Good fun, as I was depping with my old band. I enjoyed playing with them again, all the old songs and a few new ones. Missed getting in before midnight by about 5 minutes, so I saw the new year in as I drove around Kingston Bagpuise roundabout on the A420! Played my MiM Jazz bass deluxe with John East pre-amp through my Rootmaster 800 head and a Super Compact cab. It was a loud gig - the amp was nearly flat out!
-
I'm depping tonight with my old band, so an easy and pleasant way to spend NYE. We're somewhere in Swindon we've payed before, but I can't remember it - we played a lot of gigs there back in the day. I'm told there's a dress code - no T shirts, no jeans, no trainers. It's going to be a cold night!
-
I just make sure that there is a bass in the case before I load it into the car! l used to get recurring bad dreams about turning up to play, opening the case to find it empty.
-
As I play in a Grateful Dead tribute band, I'd obviously like to sound more like Phil Lesh. He doesn't play a 'line', more just moves around the music, but the closest to a defined 'bass line' could be Estimated Prophet (tricky time sig and a lot of movement up the neck).
-
Our sort of audience!
-
My Jazz bass with a John East pre amp built in works better plugged into the passive input of my Rootmaster head. I was told to use whichever input matches the output level.
-
Classic rock? I ain't gotta clue!

Jazz basses - they all sound the same

All I know is that the further I got from my J basses, the more I needed a P.
