  1. Which is the reason that the ST lives downstairs and the SC is upstairs, doubling as a practice rig with my RM 800 on its lowest volume setting!
  2. I'll drag the Compact downstairs, drag the Twin out of the corner, take & post a pic, then shove 'em back where they belong. Eventually!
  3. I already had the RM 800 head, and my friend's music shop didn't have any Rumbles in stock, so the SC was an easy buy (and a known quantity, I had one until February when I stupidly sold it!)
  4. I thought I had shared it last week when I agreed to buy the cab! Anyway, you've done it for me, cheers!! The SC/RM800 rig will be used in Tavistock and Bristol in a week's time, so that should show whether it was a good idea or not! Next time out after that is a fairly small venue in Cockfosters, the 2x12 was definitely a bit OTT last time we played there!
  5. I went through the same thought process a couple of weeks ago. I usually play through an Ashdown ABM 600 and Barefaced Super Twin (2x12) but had car problems and ended up playing our most prestigious event of the year through a Rumble 100 (DI'd), which got me thinking. In the end I bought a Super Compact (1x12) cab and will use it for the next couple of gigs with my Rootmaster 800 head - every bit as small and light as a combo, but more flexible. Unfortunately, my attempt to cut back on gear resulted in more gear, but that's how it goes!
  6. My biggest gripe about trying to sell basses here is the avalanche of messages asking what it weighs, and never hearing from any of them ever again. Not even a 'thanks, but too heavy/too light for me' response. Just zilch. I only have four basses now, and two of them (the four stringers) mate well be up for sale in the next 12 months, as might half my gigging amps & cabs.
  7. Congratulations are obviously in order, but I have to confess that I have no idea what 'making beats' means! I'm sure your son would laugh at another old fart failing to get it, so never mind.
  8. Thanks for the tip - I'm staying over near Newton Abbott, so won't be indulging. We've got a gig in Bristol the next night, as well. I've never played there before, but was shown around the venue by the manager a few weeks ago - very impressive!
  9. I use a pick 90% of the time - the remaining 10% being when I am playing at home and can't be ors bothered to look for a pick for simple i minute exercise. I started using a pick after a motorcycle accident a few years ago that bugg messed up my right hand, but now play in a tribute band where the original played with a pick, so the sound is right. Three years down the line of pick playing, I find I am playing faster clearer lines, and wouldn't go back to finger playing even if a miracle cured my knackered hand.
  10. My next gig is in Devon (just) - Tavistock's Wharf. We're on a percentage of the door with a decent minimum guaranteed. August 23rd if anyone's interested!
  11. No, I didn't even make the final cut! Old Grenville wins by a country mile every year. He's the smartest idiot I've ever met!!
  12. I quit the pub scene a year ago, but for the last 5-6 years before that it was 200-300 a night.
  13. Sadly not, I couldn't make the grade! (It's true - in the next village (where my local pub is!) there is a keenly contested competition for the title of village idiot.)
  14. I'll have you know that the title of village idiot is keenly fought over round here!

    Hi

Mr software doesn't want to upset people with real words like sh!t. About as daft an idea as I have ever heard. I can't even type sh!t properly because the forum software substitutes it with something suitable for kindergartens.
  16. It's fairly obvious that most of us like the music from our formative years and nothing compares to it because we are no longer that age, sadly.
  17. There's great music being made currently for people who are 40-50 younger than me! My listening preferences are music from my teens and early 20s. Sadly, those days are long ago. I am rarely subjected to modern music, as my children have long since left home (and both prefer older stuff anyway!) and am not exposed to radio or television.
  18. I have occasionally let other bassists use my gear, but only when I am there and to people I know. The last couple of shows I've played with the Grateful Dudes has been with borrowed amps, though. The first was in Germany and couldn't take much of our own gear. I spent three nights playing through a combo which worked fine, but I can't remember what it was now. Last weekend, we played a festival and my car broke down on the way. I used my wife's car to get there after that, but it is too small for my cab, so I took an amp and one of the guitarists said he'd arrange a cab for me. When I got there, I ended up using a Rumble 100 combo that one of our drummer had brought along for the bassist in another band he plays with. He has rehearsal studios so has plenty of gear. Again, the combo worked well, and I certainly didn't cause any damage to either of them!
  19. I think I'll stick with regular shaped cabs for now - if I have one that looks like that, the rest of the band will think I have two monitors and there will be monitor war going one!
  20. That's a good idea, Al, but as I am always DI'd through the PA, I don't need a huge sound from my backline as that just antagonises the sound crew. It's just there for me and the drummers to hear, the rest of the band gets enough through the monitors. I know that in theory we could dispense with the backline completely, but that's not something we want to do just yet (except the keyboard player, he just goes straight into the PA and has a monitor next to him - which on small stages is also my monitor - no backline and I wouldn't hear myself at all!).
  21. I was sensible, I'd have bought the SC originally, and then maybe considered adding a second later, but instead I bought an ST when they first came out and have been loathe to sell it even though it is more speaker than I ever need. I'll buy the SC I've been offered and keep the ST until the dust is so thick I'll forget it's there!
  22. That's got to be the answer - cut back by buying more!!
  23. That's a good question, and one I can't currently answer. I think the Twin 'projects' better than the Compact, or it might be linked to the height of the driver(s). Also the impedance difference means I can drive the amp a bit harder but have a lower output. Until the start of this year I had both SC and ST, and used the Twin with my ABM 600 and the Compact with my Rootmaster 800. I had managed to convince myself that the the SC rig was for pub gigs and the ST for the bigger venues - but then I quit the pub bands and now only play music venues and festivals. I think I am likely to buy another SC and keep the ST as well - I don't think I've quite got the hang of this cutting back idea!! I've been offered an SC and am very likely to buy it.
