  1. I just set up with the amp between the drummers and adjust the level so they are happy and so am I. If the others want more or less bass, then that is then care of my the monitor mix, as you said.
  2. Gigs where I am going through the PA means we are using the venue's PA, not our own, so the transport is the same either way. I think the only gig I've played with my current band that relied on backline was earlier this year when we played in Cockfosters, which was a small function room at a football club. Next few gigs are Hebden Bridge (venue has good PA and sound man), a festival in Plauen, Germany (venue providing PA and backline), SoL festival in Kent (PA & sound crew employed by the organisers) and Tavistock (venue has large PA and sound man). For all of these except Plauen, I will be using my Ashdown ABM 600 (or the Rootmaster 800, depending on how far I need to carry my gear!) through my Barefaced Super Twin, with DI from the amp. I could get away with less power, but the drummers like to be able to hear the bass, and with two of them, that's a fair bit of stage to cover.
  3. I've just read this entire thread and am none the wiser for it. I still have idea what difference it makes whether your amp is class A, B, D or X, Y, Z. Mostly a matter how heavy the damn thing is, as far as I can gather. Neither do I know why some people can't spell dog properly, and what the dog has to do with amps, but then I've been around Basschat long enough not to let things I don't understand bother me! The main thing that puzzles me is why people are so hung up on amps, basically just a box that you plug your bass into to make it loud enough to hear on stage. All the real power is in the PA, and no matter how much we spend and tweak to get our 'perfect tone', the audience is only going to hear the soundman's idea of perfect tone. And for anyone who protests that they they are not going through the PA because they only play small gigs, then why do you need 800 watts?
  4. My old band played at the party to celebrate the Sportster's birthday at Gaydon Motor Museum a couple of years ago, organised by the HDRCGB and one of the magazines. Good crowd, fun gig.
  5. Yep, that's the one. If you go in for another one (!) tell Richie or Laura (the owners) that Dave from Standlake recommended them. Might help!
  6. Moved the premises to a more central location, bought some stock - but the main improvement is his enthusiasm and knowledge, based on experience. To be fair, it doesn't a huge amount for the average bass player, as we are definitely in the minority, so don't expect it to be competing with Bass Direct for stock of interest to us!
  7. I'll pass that on to the owner when I see him this afternoon. Chap who owns it is a pro drummer, and a pretty good bass player as well. I've also seen him playing guitar and singing, and he did a damn good job of that as well.
  8. A friend of mine bought a long-established but dead on its feet music shop in Gloucester last year. He has injected new life into it and it is now a thriving city centre business.

  10. Nope. I've been playing for about 45 years, mostly four string Fender style basses, played finger style. In the last few years I have had to change to using a pick (hand injury) and in the last 8 months or so, have been playing six string basses exclusively. But If I put on a tape of my playing 40 years ago, the way I play and the sound of the bass are very very similar to how they are today!
  11. Can the classifieds just be divided into 'things I might be interested in' and 'things I am not interested in'? I'm sure that would be easy to implement!

  13. It's just a British thing, Blue, the love of puns and so on. The first 6-8 post referred to the number of songs, then someone twisted it to mean time sigs and most of us went with it, it's in our nature. British humour can be hard to explain to non-Brits!
  14. As a six string player, I would be deeply offended by being lumped in with all those common or garden five string chaps. 🤪🤩
  15. We do 7/4 and 10/4 in the Dudes, and we definitely ain't prog! More like psychedelic country.
  16. Don't really get that sort of thing around Witney, to be honest. One good reason for living here! (though someone was attacked by a bloke with a sword last week!)
  17. Most recent gig, my amp and cab were between the drummers (we have two) and I was stood well in front of them. It meant I was unable to adjust my amp, but once set, I used the bass vol & EQ (active bass). Worked OK for me, and the drummers could hear what I was doing (better than I could, unfortunately!). At least I was visible in the pictures taken at that one, all that is usually seen of me is a shadowy arm behind the keyboard player!
  18. Not all of them are pre '72 - there are some great shows from 73 as well! I like the looser feel of the one drummer era when Mickey quit for a while, lot more space in the music. But playing with two drummers is great!

  20. I have 100 or more CDs on the shelf above my stereo in my 'music room' (smallest bedroom/box room) and they are all Grateful Dead, mostly live recordings. In fact most are 2 or 3 disc live shows. A few are 20+ disc box sets. I have most of them of them in my iTunes library as well. So whatever I listen to, it will be the Dead, unless it's a gig or rehearsal recording of the band I play in, which plays nothing but the Dead.
  21. Can't remember if I've posted to this topic to not, and not abut to wade through 117 pages to find out! So here is a pic of myself on stage with the Grateful Dudes in Putney three weeks ago. Bit of a tight stage with two drummers, but we managed.
  22. I don't like having my basses too high, that's true. And I had forgotten about the tendency to tip forward, though my right forearm stopped it from being a problem. One of these would look just right for the early Dead stuff we play but our sets mix early and late material as randomly as the Dead did!
  23. Neither of mine had any problem with neck dive, but I play with a pick, so my forearm is often resting against the body on these semi-acoustics, which probably counters the neck-heaviness.
  24. I've had a couple of them, great basses but just didn't really fit in with what I play. I'd definitely have another if I wasn't committed to playing six string bass at the moment. Never had any trouble with mine - not bridge trouble nor neck dive. Played quite a few blues gigs with them and they sounded great. Look cool, too!
