The bloke sounds like a complete knob. When said he was a painter, did he 'accidentally' forget to add 'and decorator'?
-
So you can hear what it feels like, of course! I've only asked to play two basses at BD, and both are now hanging on the wall behind me, at home.
-
Well, to answer the questions in order - they found me, and no, we ain't in it for money. A good gig is one where we break even! Last few gigs have started to show enough profit to almost cover the travel cost of the rehearsals. But the gigs are such a high it ought to be illegal!

Is that a crossword clue?

Perhaps I should have said 'realistically' priced - very few sixes seem to come up for sale. I love my Epic but now my hands have adapted to the extra stretch required by a six, a four just feels wrong!
-
I love playing my sixes - to the extent that I haven't played my fours (including my Alembic Epic) since my first six turned up. Keeping my eye out for an Alembic six at a reasonable price, but am not optimistic! Something like a nice light six string Essence.

Smooth Hound Innovations Digital Wireless Guitar System
FinnDave replied to Dood's topic in Accessories and Misc
With a rack system, it probably is, I use an Ashdown head and Barefaced cab, so the wireless is another box to plug in, find a power supply for, and to blue tack to the top of the amp to stop it vibrating off. It adds to the time it tales to set up and break down, which gets to be a burden at pub gigs. At larger gigs, I still prefer a lead as it is foolproof, no batteries to monitor either. But mostly, as I say, a lead is quicker to plug in and later to unplug and wind up, and I am a lazy git at heart! -
Smooth Hound Innovations Digital Wireless Guitar System

Understandable, Dave! I really ought to get it out and advertise it. I put a few straps I no longer use on here yesterday and the first sold in about half an hour, most of the rest went overnight. The Smooth Hound is a great bit of kit, but I simply found myself not using it at gigs, and for the last few months it hasn't even been in my kit bag, doit might as well go. If you are a little less lazy than me, then I am sure you'll be very happy with that Christmas present -

I might be moving my Smooth Hound on for the reasons stated a few posts ago, PM me if you fancy trying one without laying out the full price. -
Smooth Hound Innovations Digital Wireless Guitar System
FinnDave replied to Dood's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have never noticed any delay with my Smooth Hound, the only reason I haven't used it for a year or so is that I am lazy - a lead is less things to unpack and plug in than the wireless. I stopped taking to gigs with me several months ago. -
*SOLD* Epiphone Thunderbird Classic pro iv *Price reduced
FinnDave replied to FinnDave's topic in Basses For Sale
Yes, Upper Heyford is about half an hour from us, I live over near Witney and have nothing in the diary for December 16th so assuming no one else jumps in and grabs it, it's all yours if you still want it. It does deserve a new home, I have lost interest in playing four string at the moment, all I play is my pair of Ibby sixes. -
Secure yourself a place in the hotseat by allowing the temptation of BEADGC to confirm your reservation!

I played a three hour gig a week or so ago using my 12lb six string, and on reflection wished I hadn't! My other six is a mere 9 1/2 lbs, and would have been much easier on back and shoulder.

*SOLD* I am clearing out all of the leather straps I have accumulated over the years - most of my life I have been a strict vegetarian, but for a few years I went a bit off the tracks and bought some leather which I know find objectionable and won't be using. I'm listing five of them, all individually described and priced, all are plus postage at cost or collection from West Oxfordshire. My wife bought this for me as a birthday present, but she is happy for me to sell it now. Bear straps are beautifully made and should last a very long time. This one comes with two end straps, one long and one short, for maximum flexibility. All leather, 4mm thick, max length (between strap button holes) 49 1/2"/ 126cm. Minimum length 42 1/2" / 108cm

It has an embossed design of Anglo Saxon/Celtic knotwork at other figures which is most effective. All leather, 4mm thick, max length (between strap button holes) 50"/ 127cm. Minimum length 42 1/2" / 108cm, width 2"/50mm

I bought this strap for a Gibson Thunderbird - it suited it very well. 5mm thick, max length (between strap button holes) 56"/ 142cm. Minimum length 41.5" / 125cm, width tapers from 3 1/2" to 2 1/2" along the length of the strap

I bought this strap for a Jack Casady I had which was prone to neck dive - this has a rough leather back so it grips the shoulder well, it more or less eliminated the neck dive. All leather, 2.5mm thick, max length (between strap button holes) 57"/ 144cm. Minimum length 42 1/2" / 108cm, width 3"/ 75mm

To be honest, Lozz, I wouldn't count a pre-amp like a Sansamp as an effects box, more a part of your amp. I have experimented with my Sansamp as a pre-amp going into the power amp of my Ashdowns, but it was just more gear to set up for no real advantage. I do use it that way for gigs where the amps are supplied (if they are unknown to me) and rehearsal studios, just to reduce the amount of time I have to spend faffing about trying to a get a sound I'm happy with.
-
I use an ABM 600 (or RM800 if the gig involves bit of a walk!) through either a Barefaced Super Compact (1x12) or Super Twin (2x12). The ABM sounds beautiful through either cab, the RM nearly as good but lacks the grunt that the ABM produces even at low volumes. I previously used an ABM 500 evo II, then an evo III, bought an evo IV but got lazy so sold it and used the RM 800 for a year, until I started to miss the ABM and picked up another evo IV in great condition for the price I'd sold mine for!
-
Me too, been playing 40 years or more and never used an effects pedal. I carry a Sansamp in my kit bag, but that is primarily as a back up should my amp or cab go down. I very rarely adjust tone or volume controls on my bass or my amp - once set to suit the venue, they stay set for the rest of the night.

Strap to cure neck dive on a Jack Casady.
FinnDave replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have a long leather strap with a nice grippy underside that I bought specifically to use with a Casady bass, but no longer have the bass. I haven't used it since selling the JCB, so it has been sitting upstairs unused and unloved. I sure I could be persuaded to part with it -
After 40 years or more on four strings, I bought a couple of sixers, and after two or three months of playing only them, my fours seems very limited and he necks very narrow. I would need a week or two or re-familiarising myself before i was willing to gig a four string again.

Does it really matter what gear you have??
FinnDave replied to discreet's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps we all hear that, and interpret it in different ways. -
Does it really matter what gear you have??
FinnDave replied to discreet's topic in General Discussion
All I ask of my gear is that it is reliable, easy to set up and sounds like a bass. Nothing else really matters. I've got far too many basses - Fenders, Gibson and Alembic - but the only one I've been gigging with lately has been my 500 quid Ibanez.
