  1. I do! I suppose in that case you could play the open strings, but no fingers on the fretboard!
  2. Well, if you don't use your fingers at all, the bass is silent unless you throw it to the ground (woughly, Centurion!) or wind the amp up for booming feedback, so I'd say nearly all bass playing is about the fingers. No fingers, no bass, as Bob Marley probably said.
  3. I play with a guitarist who much prefers the sound of my white P bass to anything else - even other P basses. He even comments if I have changed the strings, but everyone else I use the 'different colour' line, even when they're the same! BTW, I reckon 'Fingers and the Audience' isn't a bad name for a band, either!
  4. Genuine made in America brown tortoiseshell celluloid Jazz Bass scratchplate, (or pick guard, whichever you prefer!) to fit modern MiM Fender standard Jazz Bass. I bought this about six months ago, but am now selling the bass, so this is surplus to requirements. It has been fitted to my Jazz, and is a perfect fit (no neck pocket cutaway so might fit US Jazz but would restrict access to the truss rod). Has seen very little use (2 or 3 days in a studio, possibly a couple of gigs, all played finger style), so the only sign of use is that the protective plastic covering has been removed. Description from manufacturer's site: This replacement Fender Jazz Bass pickguard is designed to fit Mexican made Fender Jazz Bass instruments and it will not fit any other models of Fender bass. Made from 4 ply brown celluloid tortoiseshell material, 2.41mm / 0.95 inch thick. Brown tortoiseshell, vintage mint green, black, vintage mint green. With 45 degree bevelled edge. Price includes postage with the UK
  5. I have Barefaced 1 x 12 and 2 x 12 cabs (Super Compact and Super Twin) and the ST only comes out for big gigs. The SC is enough for most pub gigs, and takes up less room in the car. I power them with Ashdown (sorry!) amps - either an ABM 600 or Rootmaster 800, depending on my mood and how far I have to carry the gear.
  6. I never practice for practice's sake, but I have been spending several hours a day for some months now learning the material for the band I joined in January, not made any easier by switching from 4 to 6 string bass recently! The aim (of the band) is to have a repertoire of at least 100 songs that we all know without the need for cheat sheets as soon as possible - as the newest member, I have my work cut out! I would say that knowing some basic theory helps me to recognise patterns and work out the lines more quickly (I am working from chord charts only).
  7. SOLD (in under 24 hours!) John East J-Tone pre-amp for Jazz bass, vol/blend, treble and bass boost/cut. Simple installation, all instructions included. I bought this here a few months ago, but am now selling my Jazz as I am only playing six string bass. I installed in my bass, it went in easily and worked as advertised, these pre-amps transform a Jazz bass (with the original tones available instantly at the press of a switch. Post in the UK for £3.00, or can be collected from West Oxfordshire, or we can meet on one of theses places on the dates listed: Leicester Sunday 21st October & Saturday/Sunday 3rd & 4th November, and near Alnwick in Northumberland for a few days in the week starting Oct 22nd.
  8. I suspect that a fingering a blind audience would result in more questions than answers, probably conducted under caution in the local police station!
  9. SOLD Oh, sweet irony! I finally achieved my dream of owning an Alembic a few months ago, played 4 or 5 gigs with it, and suddenly discovered that I really need was a six string bass. Now I have two of them, and bills to pay, so the lovely Alembic has to go. It's a 1998 Epic four string, and the Alembic build sheet for it says: top: California Walnut accent: Maple body: Mahogany neck: 3-piece Maple with 2 Walnut pinstripes fingerboard: Ebony pickups: MXY controls: Epic volume, pan, bass, treble, mono output originally made for: Guitar Center, Santa Ana, CA birthday: June 26, 1998 The bass is well set up and plays as you'd expect an instrument of this class to play - if I ever switch back to 4 string, I'm going to hate myself for letting this go, but needs must. No case included. so it will need collecting (West Oxfordshire) or a meet up. I will be in South Devon the weekend of the 8th/9th December and in the Wirral 15th/16th December and can bring the bass with me if there is a buyer there.
  10. Yeah, dead handy for bass playing! Sadly I only lived there, so I wasn't born with that advantage.
  11. Sold If this looks familiar, it will be because it was advertised here about six months ago, and I bought it. since then, i have played it twice, and just sits there taking up space I can't really spare, so it's back on the market. There was a minor problem with the under-the-saddle pick up when I bought it, which has now been fixed, and the bass plays well acoustically or amplified. Standard 34" scale, sounds like a bass guitar should. There is no case or bag with this bass, so it will need to be collected from West Oxfordshire, or by arrangement if I am in your area at any time. I will be in Leicester Sunday 21st October & Saturday/Sunday 3rd & 4th November, and near Alnwick in Northumberland for a few days in the week starting Oct 22nd. Cheery picture of bass below, pease note that the sale is for the bass only, and it does not include the long-haired beardy bloke, the laptop with Grateful Dead dancing bear stickers, the guitar cases and speaker cab in the background or any of the household furniture and fittings in the photo!
  12. I used to live in Stockport - Salford was a far away place back then!
  13. A girl with 4 big ears? Never met anyone like that, she must have had very good hearing!
  14. Good to know, I wrote to them a week or two ago asking if they were interested in giving us a gig!
  15. This thread is going to kill the trade in basses for sale here!
  16. Me too, I have two Ashdown heads (ABM 600 & RM 800) and two Barefaced cabs (Super Twin & Super Compact) and either cab sounds great with either amp. I can't see any reason to change or add to them in the foreseeable future.
  17. That's grim, sorry for my flippant post. A good friends of mine had the grisly task of cutting down his son's body after he'd hanged himself in the back garden, so I should know better than to make light of such a serious subject.
  18. No idea, but I'm told you need to give 'em enough rope...
  19. Everything anyone needs to know about the music business is right there, the Rutles all-inclusive guide!
  20. Thank you, I'll pass on your comments to the rest of the band. Paul (on of the drummers) takes lead vocals on both of those, so he'll be pleased to hear them singled out for praise.
  21. Most guitarists also think that's all there is to it as well. And to be fair, you're more likely to get hired playing solid roots & fifths than you are rushing around the fretboard.
  22. I've always been opposed to the idea of corporal punishment for children and basses. What has a bass ever done to deserve a slap?
