I grew up in Oxford in the 60s but moved away in the early 70s, before music had taken hold of me, and have been back here for only the last 5 years, so there's a bit of a gap in my local knowledge!
-
I'm pretty sure he did, I believe he also set up the Oxford branch of PMT. He's a very skilled and knowledgeable chap, and very easy to get along with too. Wish that guitar gallery had been there when I was living in Summertown, long long ago!

Writing just 'no' and 'yes' in each post leaves you wide open to constructive (or destructive!) misinterpretation if anyone was so inclined
-
So you're retracting your earlier no now?
-
I thought your initial post was suggesting that as it all sounds the same out front why bother wasting money on an expensive one when a cheap does the same job. I think that is down to having a sympathetic and competent sound man more than anything else.
-
Well which is it, yes or no?
-
Are you sure about that then?

Pershonally, I think righting when pished is fine, it is more expresso of what you is thinking. I'd agree with what you said or wot you rote, in general. Or anywhere else. Anyways, a lot of it is not about what the pubic appreciate, its about having a sound that makes you happy, and we do like to be happy, don't we? I mean, if the bass sounds nice in your ears, then it helps you play better. Or something. I usually play Fender basses, but last weekend played two giggles using my Alembic and it sounded nicer to me ears, but also to the rest of the band, the soundman and a surprising number of peeple in the ordinance, many of whom came to tell me how nice the bass sounded. Which was nice. (it's harder trying to write pished when you're not than trying to write sober when you're not!)

I forgot about this thread, I was treated very well when I popped in about ten days ago, arrived with two Precisions, left with an Alembic and a small dent in the wallet, no pressure was applied (not that it was needed, the Alembic was calling to me!) and everything was very relaxed and friendly.

****SOLD**** Selling my Ashdown Rootmaster 800 amp head. Bought it used a year ago as a back-up to my RM 800 evo, and although it's been taken to every gig since, I've only ever used it at home as the other amp has been completely reliable. This is the earlier, non-evo version, so lacks one or two of the bells & whistles, but is a very capable and portable amp. I use my Rootmaster mainly through a Barefaced 1x12 8 ohm cab, so the amp is pushing out less than 600w, but it still has never needed to be turned above 1/3 volume. I have also used it through my 2x12 4 ohm cab, and that is very impressive! Almost certainly louder than I will ever need. Small, light, powerful, good tone, what's not to like? Yours for a mere £300 collected from West Oxfordshire, or posted at cost. *I will be travelling around a bit this Autumn, and can bring this with me for a buyer if it helps. I will be in Dorset at the end of September, Leicester on 21st October and 3rd November, and Northumberland (Alnwick area) 4th week October.

Is that the Aston near Bampton? If so, I went there a few years ago with a friend (now sadly deceased) who took his PRS guitar there. To say we were unimpressed would be an understatement, took us several hours to make his guitar playable when we got it back and the mere mention of 'Aston' would have us in fits of laughter for several years afterwards!

*SOLD* Epiphone Thunderbird Classic pro iv *Price reduced
FinnDave posted a topic in Basses For Sale
*SOLD* Price reduced to £400, for this lovely bass which comes with Gotoh tuners and a Babicz bridge and Epiphone hard case. This is my rather special Epiphone Thunderbird pro classic iv, the through-neck version with Gibson pick ups. This bass, in addition to being in perfect condition, has the added attractions of a Babizc full contact bridge, a significant and expensive improvement over the original, and a new set of Gotoh tuners. The bridge was on the bass when I bought it, but the tuners and current set of D'Addario nickel rounds were fitted and the bass set up by a local pro luthier, who was so impressed with the quality of this bass that he ordered one for himself. Alas, this one seems to have been a 'lucky bass' as it is well above the quality of most other Epiphones, good as they are. I bought this last year, and had bought a Gibson T bird just a few weeks before, and to be honest, this was the better bass. It is complete with an Epiphone hard case, and is an impressive instrument that can stand comparison with the very best around. I shall be sorry to let it go, but I need to cut down on the number of basses I am trying to squeeze into a small house. Available to try through a decent amp and cab in my house between Abingdon and Witney in West Oxfordshire. I prefer not to risk damaging a bass this good by placing it at the mercy of the couriers. I someone were to offer a decent Ibanez six string (fretted) bass in trade/px for this, then I would definitely be interested. I already have an SR506, though... *I will be travelling around a bit this Autumn, and can bring this with me for a buyer if it helps. I will be in the Wirral 17th/18th November, and in South Devon the weekend of the 8th/9th December and can bring the bass with me if there is a buyer there. -
Yep, that's him, great bloke and really knows what he's doing. If you get in touch with him, give him my regards (Dave from Standlake), most of my basses have benefitted from his touch, those that haven't will do so soon!

I can recommend Dave Smart on Cumnor Hill, he's got a website, but I can PM you his contact details if you prefer. Which part of Oxford are you in? I live near Witney.
-
No, not had a chance yet (just realised I said I'd look in two years ago!!) Not often in Banbury during the day, occasionally there for gigs but everything shut by then. I've also got a good place closer to home, on my side of Oxford.

According to Alembic, my bass was originally made for Guitar Centre, Santa Ana, California.

Discovered on the weekend that I actually have need of a decent Jazz bass now and then, so this one's staying after all! No longer for sale. Need to make room, so reluctantly selling my 2017 Standard Jazz bass (MiM) which I bought new earlier this year. The asking price includes the original white scratch plate and a gig bag. I can add the WD celluloid scratch plate for an extra £45.00 This bass is in perfect condition, has been used for a few days in a recording studio and 2 or 3 gigs. There is no damage or wear to this bass. I am reluctant to post/courier this, and would prefer the buyer to collect from my house between Abingdon and Witney in West Oxfordshire so that they can try it out through a decent amp and cab.

Sold and collected, now in its new home. Continuing my cull of basses I have bought which I have not been using enough to justify the space they take in my house. This is a fine 2016 Fender US Standard Precision bass in sunburst with a rosewood fretboard and tort guard - a classic! Sounds, looks, and feels exactly as a Precision bass should. I have owned this bass since last December, but the music I play has changed and I no longer need more than one Precision. I am reluctant to post/courier this, and would prefer the buyer to collect from my house between Abingdon and Witney in West Oxfordshire so that they can try it out through a decent amp and cab. *I will be travelling around a bit this Autumn, and can bring this with me for a buyer if it helps. I will be in Dorset at the end of September, Leicester on 21st October and 3rd November, and Northumberland (Alnwick area) 4th week October

How long ago did it come out? And what was the price of a standard Precision back then?
-
Looking at Alembic's site, the Excel & the Orion share the same pre-amp as the Epic and all three are set necks rather then through necks, and all start at $7000. Looks like the through neck range starts at $8500.

Compact amp that puts out good power at 8 Ohms
FinnDave replied to Jazzjames's topic in Amps and Cabs
I use an Ashdown RM 800 into 8ohms (Barefaced super compact) for most of my gigs, very rarely bother to take my 4 ohm super twin cab, I think I've played through it once this year! I have yet to crank the volume above 1/3rd even into the 1 x 12 at outdoor gigs. -
I used the term 'entry level' as it is the cheapest one in their range, at a mere $7000 (approx £5300). Not cheap, but all the rest cost even more! I'm certainly very impressed with mine, it is a beautiful object to look at, feels beautiful to the touch, and as for the sound!!! Just perfect.

Mine had light Dunlop super brights on when I bought it, which I changed for 45-105 D'addario nickel rounds as soon as I got it home. Once the initial twanginess had worn off in a day or two, they sound good. I was using a Fender Jazz with light LaBella flats to get somewhere near Phil Lesh's sound, but the rounds on the Epic are closer, certainly my bandmates thought so, and I find rounds more pleasant under the fingers than flats.

Thank you - we seem to having similar conversations across two forums! I'm not really up to speed on the different pre-amps, so anything you can tell me about them would be useful. I don't really need a heavy low end with the music I'm playing, more an emphasis on the mids and clean, but rounded, highs are more important, though the Epic does a decent job at of those without having to touch the amp. It's by far the best and most versatile bass I've owned, and hard to believe it is/was Alembic's 'entry level' bass! There's a very bad part of me that keeps telling me that one day I'll have to find out what the upper levels of the range can do!
