How do you know what speed to play in notation..? Is the 'A' on the 4th string, or an open 3rd string..? Some tab (not all, but they could...) do give an indication of note duration. I'd encourage you, of course, to continue with the reading of notation, as it is, in the longer term, far more useful and complete. There is no scorn from me, however, for those who choose to use tab.
I guess that in notation you have it tells you the speed because you have a hollow dot for four beats,a hollow dot with a stem for 2 beats, a filled dot for a quarter note, a bar linking 2 notes or more for an eighth, and two lines joining notes for sixteenths. Isn`t that telling you the speed, or tempo of how to play notes? It doesn`t give any info like that in tab. Of course, i haven`t seen all tab sheets, so i assume if it is a new piece that is writen, it must have more information than the pieces i have seen. I also take the point of which A to hit, which is why i mentioned i do sometimes look at tab if i am unsure.

I am pretty much a beginner. I can`t read tab, but i can read a very little bit of notation. As i have to put in time to read music, i thought it would be more beneficial to read notation instead of tab. Looking at some pieces with tab and notation, the notation tells you that you have to play an eighth or sixteenth, or whatever. In tab, it just tells you to hit 5 followed by a 7 for example. How do you know what speed to play in tab? I do occasionally look at the tab to see if it helps when i get stuck. Sometimes it does, but not very often

It is very hard to resist. I am really thinking about it, but don`t really need it. Is it going to be much different from a Clover Avenger to warrant buying it? Problem is, i will never know, as i can`t try one. Also a Streamer. Which one is best? Too much to think about

I watched a video of Carol Kaye on youtube, and she was very uncomplimentary of Fenders in the 60`s and 70`s, so it appears that the poor build is not a relativley new phenomena amongst Fenders

Maybe it is a stock problem, and hopefully nothing sinister. I like my Avenger -

Brazilian girl sent home trying to see Level 42 in UK

The only thing on TV at 5 in the morning seems to be the customs programmes. Usually it is Australia, USA or here in the UK, it seems lots of people have stories of woe, but get caught out on a few details, and gets kicked out of the country. I have to say that watching a music concert is a new one for me. I have seen some where they have a plausible story, and see no reason until the dodgy diary surfaces of contacts for work etc. It always amazes me why scammers have these diaries etc. Not saying she has done anything wrong, but as no one here was in the room when she was refused, it is all speculation. If she was genuine, then it seems a real shame. Just get up early one morning in 2 years time, and the real truth will come out on UK Border Control, shown on sky one at 5 am -
Aren't Jaguar basses short scale? (rinses mouth out with soap and water) IGMC
I was going to get a short scale Hagstom Viking. Are short scales useless?

New bass for around a grand.or keep what I've got.
timmo replied to red rooster's topic in General Discussion
Keep the one you have, and save the money for when you have more experience in my opinion. You may find that you have a certain sound and style you like later on, and find you can`t get the sound you are after from the bass you have just spent £1000 on. Squires aren`t bad basses to begin with. -
Commando, or how about Big Head Bullet after the Royal Enfield?

Has anyone ever played Papa Was a Rolling Stone by the Temptations? I would imagine that would be a very boring bass line to play
-
This could be interesting. It is being screened on BBC4, Sunday, or you can listen to it on 6 music website. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-29601159
One never finishes with learning, eh..?
One hopes not. Would make for a boring life if we stopped learning

Ok thank you. I would have been surprised if it was a slap or pop, because i was reading the notation for My Girl, Temptations. It didn`t seem to be the right context for that song

As the question says.In music, why is there an x on the end of some stems instead of a dot.
Always thought about coming but as everyone seems to know what they are doing basswise and I have difficulty playing root notes I've always bottled it
I wouldn`t worry about it. I went last year, and was in the same position, and i am still not much better. I found it really interesting, with all the workshops that were laid on, and see all the gear that people have. You will have a great time, and worth every penny of the entrance fee. You are not expected to play anything, so you can take that worry away. People will always give you advice. -
What would be the reply if it was a name in trouble, eh..? We had Maçias Parker at our festival some years ago; the bassist ('Skeet' Curtis...) had problems with his Lakland, and no back-up (gigging abroad, flying...). We lent him our Cort 5-er, he fitted a set of his strings on it and played the headline spot; it sounded great. Would that have changed things for any of you..? Hmm...
Did he let you keep the strings? I would imagine most people would lend to a big name, get him to sign it and pose for a photo , preferably playing it, then stick it in Ebay
-
Unless he was jumping around the stage, and genrally treating his bass badly, i would. You never know when you might need a favour.
You have obviously never heard of Liquorice and the Allsorts,
I did have to look up The Cartoons video to see if it would fit into thier band. However, the Upright Bass was a far superior bit of gear
-
I wonder why the band he was in, never took off?
-
My Girl- Temptations. Been listening to it for ear training, as i thought it would be easy. I was so sure it was in the key of A, but seems it is G. Have to listen to something else to see if i do better.

OK, thanks. A good, obvious suggestion.Checked with the Clover website, and it appears it is a polyester finish, which is good from a stand point of view.
