I'm sticking with the steel Superbrights on my precision because they work perfectly for me on that bass. Having flats on the Ray is also to give me more of a contrast in sound between the two basses. That said I did accidentally order nickel Superbrights a few weeks ago and had already clipped the first string before I noticed so just went ahead and put them on the precision. They weren't too bad in all honesty but nickel has just never been my thing and it just sounded so much better to my ears when I changed back to a steel set.

I now have a set of Cobalts on the Ray which have been on the for about half a dozen gigs and I love them! They were very bright at first but now that they've settled in and been played a bit they've lost a bit of the initial roundwound style zing but there's still a lot more harmonic overtones than you'd normality get from flats so still bright but more a growly high-mid brightness than a trebley zing. It's actually quite piano like. Basically perfect for what I wanted with the Ray. Still definitely that classic Stingray sound but the highs are much smoother and that low mid punch is really accentuated - tighter and more focused than rounds.

Just plugged this in at home for the first time this evening. Ashdown ABM500 through a pair of Aguilar DB112 cabs for the lows and a Laney Vc100 all valve head through a Laney IRT212 cab for the highs. You might be surprised to hear that it's quite loud. 😐

That does look ideal. Unfortunately I may have to wait a bit before Mrs Painy sanctions any further expenditure. 😞 Frustratingly the head won't actually be in my possession until Sunday morning so I have to wait until then to try it out and see what works. In the meantime I was bored at work today so killed some time by mocking up what it'll all look like all set up. At least even if it doesn't sound any good it should at least look pretty intimidating. 😁

Sorry, did actually mean to type high pass (I fully get difference between high and low pass i.e. that a high pass filter allows the highs to pass through while cutting off the lows). 😄 It's not so much the full Royal Blood thing - I'm thinking more along the lines of dUg Pinnick to be honest. Basically I just fancy some real valve break up and grit in the highs and mids but with big, deep, smooth, clean lows underneath it. Unfortunately the frequency response doesn't seem to have been published for the cab as far as I can find so no joy there. If anyone can find it out though that would be great - it's a Laney IRT212. The head incidentally is a Laney VH100R. Thanks for your thoughts guys. 🙂👍

I've just purchased a 100w valve guitar head and 2x12 guitar cab (rated at 160w RMS continuous and is sealed) with the intention of combining it with my existing bass amp (ashdown abm500 & 2 x Aguilar DB112 cabs) but could really do with some advice so I don't blow the speakers in the guitar cab (especially as I'm playing a 5 string). I know the obvious thing to use to protect the guitar speakers would be a low pass filter or a crossover for a true bi-amp setup but as I don't have one I'm wondering if simply turning the bass down on the guitar head would reduce the potentially damaging lows sufficiently i.e. Is this also likely to sufficiently reduce the frequencies below the eq centre or would I just be cutting around say 100hz but still letting the damaging stuff down at 40hz through?

I get what you're saying (and I'd definitely considered the pedal) but to clarify this would also be used as an actual guitar amp at home / jamming with friends. Is also more that I'm considering it could be used this way rather than the dug sound being the main goal. Basically there's a new toy I want to buy and I'm asking you guys on Basschat to help me justify it! 😄

I've now resigned myself to the fact that Mrs Painy is never going to sign off on the expenditure needed for me to buy the Ashdown CTM300 I'd really like (or even a CTM30 for that matter) but I still have an all valve itch that needs scratching. I'm thinking about getting a small and affordable all valve guitar head (specifically a Bugera G20) which I can run my bass through for home playing and recording but I'm wondering if I can make use of it live alongside my existing bass rig (a la Dug Pinnick). My bass amp setup is an Ashdown ABM500 into a pair of Aguilar DB112 cabs and the band is a pretty loud 4 piece playing rock covers (miced up drums, 2 x 100w half stacks). I can DI / mic up into the PA to get a better spread of sound but the backline will be doing most of the work. Would a 20w valve guitar head like that through a small 112 cab be enough to add some noticeable driven highs and mids to compliment the sound of my bass amp (again thinking very loosely along the lines of dug's sound) or is it just likely to get lost in the mix like there's just a wasp in the room? Any thoughts or experience that anyone can share would be very much appreciated.

Similar story: There's a chap originally from Macedonia by the name of Radé who has been playing solo gigs (vocals, guitar & backing tracks) in pubs around Norfolk for years. A singer I know was offered the chance to do some gigs with him over in Macedonia and while they were there Radé likewise couldn't walk down the street without constantly being approached for autographs etc. When my friend asked him why he bothered to come over to England and play small pubs for £100 a time, he apparently replied that was still more than he could earn as a big name star back home. Incidentally, nobody ever went to watch a movie about Bruce Wayne the billionaire businessman with a little side-story about his hobby as a masked vigilante. They go to watch Batman (who happens use his day job as a CEO to fund his amazing superhero exploits).

Up for sale here is my Ashdown Dual Band Compressor Pedal. Price is now £35 + postage at cost which will be £3.95 Royal Mail second class signed. This is a great compressor which works similarly to the legendary old Trace Elliot SMX compressors. Full working order and great condition with only a few scratches that you can see in the pictures (has velcro on the bottom as you can also see but easily removed if not required). Comes with the (scruffy) original box but please note, the power supply isn't included. Quite a clever but simple to use compressor. Set your overall input level using the VU meter and you can then control the amount of compression for the lows and the highs separately. This works by boosting either frequency range over the compression threshold. The fixed ratio is pre-set at 8:1 The EQ control allows you to then rebalance the levels between the lows and highs to compensate for any differences between your high and low compression settings. It is however also excellent for generally tweaking your overall tone. The pedal is also true bypass Any questions please ask.

Biggest indoor gig I've played so far is still the LCR at the University of East Anglia back in 1997 when I was just 16 (Skunk Anansie had played there the week before which was pretty cool) - capacity 1550. It was part of a multi-band event as the finale to national youth week although we did headline it. In March though we will be playing OPEN in Norwich (only band playing this time) which will probably be the biggest that we've played since at a capacity of 1450 - although it's a private function for the deputy director of Norwich City Football Club so not sure if that counts. I did also play an outdoor gig once that technically had about 6000 people in attendance although to be fair they weren't really paying much attention to us as they were more interested in the livestock and tractors on display. 🙄😄😄😄

I have liked Fender Flats when I've used them in the past but unfortunately it seems they're no longer available in 5 string sets.

I'm going to be ordering a set of flats this week to go on my Sterling Ray 25CA and I've narrowed it down to 2 options but I'm still a bit undecided which way to go. I want something that will tame the aggressive highs of the Stingray a little to allow the lower mids to punch through a bit more but I still don't want to lose all the clarity and note definition so I'm looking at more 'modern' flats (I've used Deep Talking flats on another bass before and they felt nice but seemed to sound a bit too undefined for me). There's been a fair bit on here about Cobalts recently and they seem like a natural contender so that's option one. On my other basses though I'll be continuing to use Dunlop Superbrights steel roundwounds which are my favourite strings which has me wondering about the Dunlop flats. They would be a couple of quid cheaper and I like the idea of sticking with the same brand but they're seems to be more of a mix of views from what I've read about them - some comparing their brightness to Chromes and Cobalts and others saying they're not quite so bright - more like Fender flats. In any case I'm not 100% how bright ill need them to be to achieve what I want. Has anyone used both that can say how they compare or even just give some insight that might help (car also has its Mot this month and flats aren't the cheapest strings so I don't want to waste my money going for the wrong option if I can help it)? Get the drummer to wear one of these to isolate the mic from the drum? Available from all good vets - plus, as he's a drummer, it will have the added bonus of preventing him from licking his own balls (sorry @Dad3353). 😁
