  1. He was actually selling both of his own ones (I think one fretted and one fretless) on eBay a couple of years ago for about that amount. I seem to remember from the description that he'd had them master-built by the Fender Custom Shop and had been in talks with them at the time to bring it out as a signature. Unfortunately it soon became very obvious that Alien Ant Farm would never have any more hits after Movies and their cover of Smooth Criminal and were destined to simply fade into obscurity and irrelevance so they never actually went into production with it as it was far too hideous to sell on its own merits. (Okay so he didn't actually say that second half of that but you could read between the lines ).
  2. Amp, cabs, pedalboard, cases etc. Under the stairs and then a view into the office/music room/my wife's work room where my basses and little practice combo are readily at hand but protected from the kids by a stair-gate.
  3. @Cosmo Valdemar I do love JE's Live at Leeds sound and the Leeds pedal is clearly going to be great at getting that sound but I'd probably use my precision if that was what I was after in this instance. I am thinking more of the Studio version from Quadrophenia hence the idea of using the Gibson as a starting point. Listening to it here it does sound to me like it's overdriven but the lack of harsh treble means it's a very smooth, warm drive that just gives a punch in the mids rather than being at all aggressive.
  4. Incidentally @dood after chatting to you on facebook about trying to recreate Glenn Hughes' tone I pretty much got there in the end. Bit of a convoluted signal chain in the end but it went: jazz played with a pick into an MXR M80 on the clean channel with the colour button in but the mids cranked to counter the scoop of the pre-shape then into a BDI 21 with both the drive and the presence controls pushed up a fair bit and then into a Lomenzo Hyperdrive mainly adding some high mids with only a subtle amount of drive then into an Ashdown ABM 500. Sounds amazing but I'm really hoping this will be a simpler process .
  5. Cool, thanks for the link - quite a bit cheaper than the Joyo branded ones seem to go for. The tech21 Leeds does sound pretty amazing! Having just paid out to put the car through its MOT this month though, the American Sound is probably going to be a quicker fix at the moment
  6. Been looking at the American Sound actually just for a bit of fun to play with. Would be interesting to see if it might do the job and they don't come much more affordable!
  7. I've had the Soul Food, sold (or more accurately traded) it and regretted it too. Maybe I should do the getting another thing too .
  8. Having recently bought one of the last Gibson EB 2013 basses from GAK and finding that it sounds very much like a T-Bird I'm feeling inspired to try and get a sound along the lines of John Entwistle's overdriven tone on The Real Me. Any suggestions for a (preferably fairly affordable) drive pedal that would help get me somewhere in the ballpark?
  9. I'm gutted. I was planning to bring out a range of plectrums with a built in chorus effect but this has completely stolen my thunder! Seriously though, if you want to go pedal free but still have distortion then we can only hope that one day somebody will be able to advance technology enough that we can live in a crazy musical utopia where you can get an actual amplifier with the effect built in so that you no longer have to have your distortion built into a cable before you can rock out. Dream big kids, dream big!
  10. Only so you can tell everyone it's your new signature pedal !

    Compressor help

Sounds like the fx knob is possibly controlling the level of the signal going into the compressor over a fixed threshold then so the more signal you put in over that threshold the more compression will be applied.
  13. Wow, this has triggered a bit of a nostalgia trip for me! I remember our singer heard them first and liked them so much that at one point we had Pure, This Is My Hollywood, Nuclear Holiday and Alright Ma all in our set at the same time . Just downloaded the Pure album on Spotify so I'm now going to have a bit of a listen and take myself back 20 years.
  14. Just received a Behringer BDI21 from Jack. Nice, simple, straightforward and pleasant transaction. Deal with confidence. Painy.
  15. Available in "Dorian Grey" if you fancy it.
  16. I spent 20 years refusing to play anything with a pickguard and anything but active basses All my basses are now passive and have pickguards. I spent 15 years saying I'd never buy another Ashdown - I'm now absolutely loving my ABM head. I don't think there's anything I'd completely rule out for a potential GAS attack at some point in future - I'm far more limited by finances than I am by sensible judgement .
  17. My current band will have been going for 22 years this coming summer so I don't have any real plans to change band anytime soon but we have been looking for a new singer for nearly 6 months now and have been gigging with a couple of dep vocalists since the start of November. We did think we had found the right guy a few months ago but that all fell through (fantastic singer from Belgium who had only been in the UK a couple of months but turns out he was in breach of some of the rules of his sabbatical from his job in Belgium and was forced to go back or repay a load of money). Anyway, it's all been a bit disheartening to be honest and we've seen so many people that weren't a fit or were one of the aforementioned time wasters that I was all but ready to pack it in. A couple of weeks ago though I was contacted by an old friend (who is a really great singer and also an excellent guitarist) who saw our advert on join my Band and is interested as his current band will be calling it a day after New Year's eve. We've sorted out an audition with him in the new year so fingers crossed but if that doesn't work out then I think I may just have to start looking for something new.
  18. Sounds like its definitely worth a punt then and as CameronJ says, easily flipped if it's not what I want (can't lose all that much on a pedal that's only £50 to begin with after all).
  19. The Orange Juice seems to be referred to generally as bass friendly and the demos on YouTube sound quite Darkglass-like. Just wondering if anyone knows how it is for low end loss? I had a Knightfall briefly which was a nice drive but, despite reports to the contrary, it still suffered with the typical guitar drive pedal issue so I moved it on. The Orange Juice looks a bargain but if I've got to spend out on top for a blend pedal to use it with then I may as well just look for a used bk3.
