1. I've not had a chance to watch this properly yet myself so don't I don't know if it's a good watch or not but anything that shines a spotlight on the often under-appreciated John Deacon has to be worth at least a look.
2. Finally made it onto the site. This has been the most difficult 24 hours of my life!!! Right, I'm off to the market place to reignite my GAS for a new bass .
3. We bill ourselves as classic and modern rock and pop covers and the songs in our set fall into that rather broad category but we naturally play everything with a hard rock feel because that's the style of music that we all enjoy listening to and playing. It means we can play Hold Back the River and Uptown Funk in the same set as Hold The Line, Rock and Roll and Paradise City and it all sounds coherent so any song is fair game if we can make it fit. Basically we play a fair few songs that I wouldn't necessarily choose to listen to the original but I'd happily listen our version . That said, and as others have said, there are other genres I'd love to try playing (not with this band) like jazz for example but I'm not sure I'm up to it - not so much lacking the chops as the music theory knowledge.
4. For my own gear I'll generally take about 45 minutes. 5 minutes load in. 8 minutes to stack up my cabs and amp head, connect speaker cables, run out extension leads and connect the power, put my (3) basses on their stand and find somewhere out of the way to put their cases. 30 minutes waiting for the drummer to move his drum cases and cymbal stands out of the spot where I'll be standing when we play. 3 minutes to then position my mic stand and pedal board in said spot, plug in guitar cables and sort out my IEMs. To be fair though that 30 minutes does come in handy. It means I have half an hour to chat to the guitarist about how annoying it is when our drummer leaves his cases and stands all over the stage.
5. Why should you avoid Ashdown amps? Because of supply and demand. If you don't want one then it helps keep the used prices nice and low for those of us that love them. Simple!
6. I had a Trace Elliot AH400SMX head that I sold about 12 years ago and really missed ever since. This was made worse because I hated the Ashdown head that replaced it. Forward to earlier this year and I picked up another SMX head (an AH350 this time though) and absolutely loved having one again. Ironically though I picked up another Ashdown head just over a month ago intending to use it as a backup but it turns out I now prefer the Ashdown to the Trace Elliot! I'm hoping to hang onto the Trace this time though so I don't end up suffering the same regret again.
7. Get a chrome guard and channel your inner Phil Lynott. (BWB from the options available though).
8. I only play fives but it depends on the shape of the headstock. Traditional style headstocks (Fender/Musicman) 4+1. More symmetrical or paddle style headstocks (Warwick/Spector/Ibanez SR) 3+2. Seen a few 5 string Maruszczyks recently with a Fender style headstock in a 3+2 and it just doesn't look right to me somehow.
9. My Squier VM P5. The neck sits in my hand just so and the action is nice and low. Everything about how it feels and plays is absolutely perfect for me. Sound-wise it's pretty damn good too but I have a new pickup waiting to go in it which I reckon should improve it further. The trouble is it'll need a little routing to fit properly and I'm a bit scared of taking the plunge. It's actually the cheapest bass I've ever owned and yet it's by far my favorite and if none of my kids ever decide to take up bass for me to hand it down to them then it'll be buried with me!
10.
Wear something that you wouldn't wear in the street, you are entertaining after all.
Unless you are rock n roll enough to dress like a rock star on stage all the time of course.
11. My first gig I played through my mate's Goodmans twin cassette home karaoke machine. Sounded dreadful and was almost inaudible but I didn't care. Amazingly we actually managed to use that thing to create multi track recordings. First recorded the drums onto one tape then played it back while playing along with the Bass and recording onto the second tape. Kept repeating that bouncing it down each time until we had all the instruments and vocals recorded. Wasn't exactly great quality obviously (the recording or our musicianship) but was so much fun at the time!
12.
Thank you for your reply. Have you tested the tuner out of the Trace Elliot to see if it's the same level as the instrument going in or is it affected by the input knob and any of the amps EQ? I'm hoping it's just the plain unaffected signal coming from the bass that comes through the tuner out. Yeah I get that you would have to balance the output levels for each amp but again I'm fine with this as I'd be using the 2nd amp for lows and pushing other speakers. Once I found a balance I like, I'd end up just leaving it. Again, thank you!
Appeared to be the same level coming from the tuner out as the instrument level going in (had the input gain on the 'slave' amp at the same level as it would normally have been plugging the Bass in directly) and it wasn't affected but turning the output volume up or down either.
13. I did exactly method 1 with an Aguilar AG500 and a Trace Elliot AH350SMX (the EQ knob in the SMX section of the Trace is ideal for this as it is a tilting eq so just turn to the left to boost lows and cut highs). Worked absolutely fine. The only issue I found was that, when adjusting the overall volume, it was a pain to maintain the same balance between the two amps as you have to adjust both output controls separately.
14. Best purchase: Ashdown ABM500rc head. Had a bad experience with a MAG head years ago that put me off for ages but saw this for sale on here with its shiny chrome face-plate and decided to give Ashdown another go. So glad I did, I'm absolutely loving it! Close second: Trace Elliot AH350SMX. I had an AH400SMX years ago which I stupidly sold (and even more stupidly replaced it with the afore mentioned MAG head) and then missed it ever since. Getting this was like reuniting with an old, long absent friend. Best value: Again the ABM500. Straight trade of what was my backup head against what has become my main head. Worst purchase: A COG Knightfall. Such a cool looking little pedal and all the online demos I heard sounded amazing but unfortunately I couldn't get a usable sound of of it. On the plus side I managed to sell it on very quickly for exactly what I paid for it so shouldn't really complain.
15.
If everyone sends me £100, I'll reveal the simple way to make a shedload of money just by typing a few words on the internet...
I'm reminded of an episode of Bottom in which Richie received a letter (which had actually been sent by Eddie) that simply said "Congratulations! You have been specially selected for this once in a lifetime opportunity to send us £50". I've often wondered how many people would actually go for it if you sent out enough copies.
16. Ah, you're all cynical now but you wait until next year when the Lula Jazz Band are selling out a world tour of arenas and stadiums and you'll be wishing you'd got in on this from the start like they have!
17. You can have my Harley Benton P/J 5er if you want it Pat.
18.
I've got an SMX GP12 head, and compressor hardly does anything at all (and the valve preamp) beginning to think it must be faulty, great amps though, I've also got a series 6 GP12 and there's not a lot of difference between that and the SMX with the presets not engaged
I find the compressor on mine gives a lovely punch to the lows (I only use the compressor on the highs very sparingly) and the EQ control in the SMX is really handy to adjust the sound to the room without messing up your carefully crafted graphic. The valve preamp though I have to agree appears to do bugger all
19. How about one of these perspex document holders:- http://www.desktop-innovations.co.uk/writing-slopes-and-document-holders/ergonomic-angled-document-holder-writing-slope/?gid=28&gclid=CjwKCAjw7MDPBRAFEiwAppdF9HGLPGMi85m30S2cX0EFMNq36ZDqFHivOwzpN8H2R0Q5SaZeS-3c9hoCUskQAvD_BwE#colour:Clear
20. For me the the built in SMX compressor is the star of the Trace Elliot show so I'd be looking at something in that range (What am I saying? I actually have one in that range ) As far as the weight goes, the combos are often a bit of a back breaker but my AH350SMX head is perfectly manageable and if it's a short walk into the venue from my car I'll often take it in one hand with a bass in the other so not that bad at all (and I'm not a big guy). The weight is definitely worth it for that Trace sound IMHO.
21. I'm selling my Palmer Ubertreiber bass overdrive pedal as I've just picked up a Lomenzo Hyperdrive which is now taking up all the space on my board so looking to move this on to make some space. This is a really great sounding overdrive that really brings out the harmonics nicely. A handy feature is the -10dB pad switch which is particularly useful if you use an active bass or your bass just has a particularly hot output. It also includes the all important clean blend to keep your low end intact. These pedals are built like tanks and apart from a tiny paint chip on one corner, a scratch on one of the control knobs and a scuff to the surface of the foam rubber on the base (where it obviously doesn't show anyway) this is in very good condition and is in full working order. I currently have this listed on eBay so you can view more pictures there - just search for item number 142547035341. I have it listed there for £35 + £4 UK postage but will let it go on here for £28 - again +£4 postage to the UK. Trades I'm interested in would be either an Ashdown FS-4 four-way footswitch or a passive volume attenuator pedal such as the Leech or the EHX Signal Pad.
