1. I think you're looking at this from the wrong perspective. You may only need one to run the cabs you currently have but if you just buy more cabs then you'll need both amps to run them all - simple! You're welcome.
2. Last night was our singer's last gig after seven and a half years with the band as he's just joined the police force. Fortunately he was able to finish on a high and we played an absolute stormer to a small but packed pub. The very appreciative crowd danced, sang along and cheered all night and we played really well. I also got to try out my new amp (Ashdown ABM500 which I just got in a trade with another BCer) and it sounded earthshakingly epic. Mixed emotions with a fantastic gig but sad that our singer, who is also a very close friend, is leaving. A bit blurry but managed to quickly snap this pic of the crowd during a breakdown.
3. Just completed a trade of amp heads with Andy. A very easy and friendly transaction and I hope he's as happy with his end of the deal as I am. I'd be more than happy to deal with him again in future .
4. Personally I think I'll just pick up a couple of heavy old 80s Peavey cabs and re-cover them in carbon fibre effect tolex to achieve the same effect. Should be able to get a nice pair of 410s they way for a couple of hundred quid with change.
5. Apart from a different middle name (I appear to be uniquely absent entirely from the internet if I google my full name) I seem to have spent the last 4 years as the Bishop of Monmouth. I'm not even religious!
6.
Was going to say the facebook bass players market place, but that is a ripper, not a grabber. I always thought they were the same!
Was going to say I'd seen one advertised somewhere online very recently but pretty sure now it was this that I'd seen. Seem to remember it's actually an Epi.
7.
This is inspired by a comment I read in another thread. Lots of folk on here, when GASing over a bass will ask, nut-width and weight. There's a bass I've been playing that I might have to give up due to its weight, yet the last owner gigged it so regularly that the frets were worn down and there are channels worn into the wood of the fingerboard. So what's your heaviest bass that gets played? Do you gig with it? What about it still makes you want it? I'll kick it off with 5.37Kg (11.83 lb) In my case, it only gets played when sitting. The tone is deep, solid and rounded. It's got a solid Bubinga wood body.
Well my heaviest bass obviously used to be this one . Nice to see it restored to its former glory! I'd guess I probably played somewhere in the region of 8-900 gigs with that bass and honestly the weight never bothered me. To the extent in fact that I once sold a Spector Legend because it was too light. I just prefer the feel of a substantial bass for some reason. The fact that this old corvette had such a fantastic tone always made it worthwhile for me too. In the end it was the shape of the neck that put it to pasture rather than the weight.
8. Bonehead from Oasis. Those barr chords - major AND minor! A veritable colossus of the guitar world.
9.
Trade the kids in for the AD200b. Should get a good deal on them. Dave
You haven't met my kids have you!
10.
Painy- I heard that rig live when Glenn was on tour, end even with his crappy bitsa Nash bass it sounded absolutely immense. If you like that sound in the videos you will love it live, seeing him play and listening to him changed a lot of my thoughts on sound and gear etc (I don’t have orange stuff myself BTW) and was a real changer for me. Hope you get to your goal
I've seen Glenn a few times now (once with a Vigier through a Hughes & Kettner rig and the other times a Jazz through an SVT) and his sound has always been great. The sound of this Orange rig just seems to have a magical something extra to my ears though.
11. Well after all that I've been distracted by something shiny in the for sale section and it looks like a trade is on the cards. I'm thinking now I may just keep saving up even if it takes me another year and then see if I can pick up an AD200 second hand. In the mean time I guess I'll just have fun trying to get as close as possible to that tone with what I have . The Orange GAS hasn't gone, I'm just suppressing it for a while .
12. Only fretted 5 strings (x4). Been Playing 22 years and it's been 5 strings for the last 18 apart from a brief dabble with a 6 so that's where I'm comfortable .
13. Ah, sadly I don't have one kicking around anywhere. GLWTS
14. Appreciate you're selling this as you have something specific in mind to buy but I'll ask anyway, any trade options? Had a Mag Evo head years ago that I didn't get on with but understand the ABM is a different beast (and this one is very shiny!).
15. Careful now taking about high octane fuel, somebody will mention those posh power cables next and that'll be a another can of worms opened!
16.
I've just bought one off eBay from music group Europe advertised at £410. Factory refurbished sold as new with 3 year warranty. I was dubious like everyone else but I thought at the price I'd give it a go. Actually I made a best offer and got it cheaper. I guess it's been bought before and gone back for repair but it looks like new. Bought on Sunday, arrived yesterday (weds) and I've had it running all afternoon going back periodically after leaving it on standby to check it out. Absolutely no problems so far and it sounds awesome. Haven't had this much fun since having a V4 and 2x15 in the '80's. I'm running it into 2 8ohm cabs as the speaker outputs are selectable 2 or 4 ohms. Glad I pressed the button on this one because if it turns ok it's the bargain of the century. But I'll keep you posted. I'm gonna look for a 4 ohm 4x10 cab so I can use it more practically rather than humping 2 cabs around. Can't wait for a big gig to really crank it up.
I've been watching that on eBay, toying with the idea of going for a full blown, all valve head. Looks like you've saved me from explaining to Mrs Painy why I now have an amp that weighs a tonne after I justified spending (in her eyes) a small fortune by changing to lighter weight gear less than a couple of years ago.
17. On my old Trace Elliot head I press the pre-shape button.
18. Do Markbass actually make anything class A/B? Ashdown I've had before and just couldn't get a sound I liked from it unfortunately. Handbox looks interesting - I know you don't have an endorsement deal WoT but they really should offer you one . LH500 I've heard being used a few times and they do sound decent. Certainly cheap enough if it does the job. GK again heard being used a few times but never actually plugged into one myself. But more to look into at least and see if there's anything out there that can override my Orange GAS.
19. As I've posted very recently, I'm currently gassing for an Orange OB1 but before I dive in feet first are there any other heads I should be considering? Requirements as per the thread title. This is Rock/Pop covers band but our sound is very much rock even when we're playing the stuff that's more pop in nature. I've already thought of the SVT3 (I can ignore the graphic) and the LH500 but what would you recommend that fits the bill?
20. Added to my watch list. Just have to wait for Mrs Painy to have a night out now so I can watch it in peace .
21. Unfortunately, even a very cheap second hand AD200 is out of my price range at the moment. Having enquired today with PMT as to what they'd give me for my AG500 as a trade in (not generally the way to get the best deal obviously anyway) I'd still have to save up for a couple of months before I could manage even the OB1 300! Oh the joys of paying for bringing up 3 kids!
22. Thanks for that. I do think the difference between valves and class AB is less obvious than between AB and class D to be honest. I've also been chatting a bit with dood as he's reviewed these amps and was impressed by them. Now I just need a convincing story to tell Mrs Painy about why getting one of these amps is absolutely essential. Possibly something to do with halting global warming while bringing about world peace and an end to all hunger or something like that......
23. Volume aside, do you like the sound you get with your current rig? If so I'd say by changing your amp you risk losing the sound you have and like at the moment by trying to fix what is essentially a bit of a non problem (if it's a case of reducing the amount of gear you have to carry about that's possibly a different matter). As has already been said, nothing wrong with having plenty of headroom. I'd just go with what you have for bigger gigs and then take just one cab to smaller gigs but tilt it as Bill suggests. GAS for something new on the other hand is another issue entirely.
24. Only if it won't do what I'm after . Otherwise I might think about putting my Aguilar AG500 up for trade but initially I'm just working out if its worth asking my local PMT to get one in for me to try out.
25. My wife uses tomatoes a lot in her cooking.
