1. I got one of these a couple of years ago and didn't like the salami effect pickguard either so I covered it in adhesive vinyl just like you've done here with the headstock. Works a treat as a cheap way to change the look and easily changed again in future too. Worked so well in fact that I did it again with my SUB Ray to go from this: To this: Might be worth a try?
2. I didn't like them at all personally. To be fair though I love Rotosounds so the Red Labels will probably be ideal for you .
3. First amp I ever lusted after after seeing one in the pages of Bassist magazine. A couple of years later we were playing a regular support with a big draw local bands and their new bass player rocked up with a DBS400, the 410 and the 215. Got to play through his rig that night and I remember every note feeling like someone was trying to kick me off the stage. I'd hang on to it personally .
4. 6 string Ken Smith I played in the old Bass Centre in Wapping.
5. That's reassuring thanks . I sold my old AH400 as spares or repair about 10 years ago to our lead guitarist's little brother and he still has it after getting it fixed up. He lent it to me for a gig a while back after my old Ampeg died and, as much as I love my current Aguilar head, I can't get the sound from that night out of my head.
6. After this thread reminded me just how much I missed my old AH400SMX I've just bought an AH350SMX which I'll be picking up on the way to my gig next Saturday. Obviously it's the same pre-amp but does anyone know if I should expect it to sound pretty much the same or is the different power section likely to change the tone at all?
7. I think that may just be the prettiest Jazz that I've seen.
8. From what I gathered when I looked into buying my own AG500, the TH500 is supposed to sound quite different. Wouldn't give you the option of buying second hand for a while at least I know but the new AG700 would seem to be the obvious solution if you're looking for the same sound in a smaller package. I'd expect them to carry a fairly hefty price tag though.
9. The horn went in one of my cabs at a gig a couple of months back and it lost so much of the articulation and note definition. I am a brand new roundwounds kind of guy though so I really like that bright aggressive sound and the horn helps with that. If I was playing reggae or Motown then I'd turn it down but for what I play and the sound I'm looking for its pretty essential.
10. I would just invite Coldplay. Now all I have to do is figure out how to dispose of the bodies.
11. I went to a gig at the UEA (University of East Anglia) about 18 years ago and watched an interesting performance consisting of an hour and a quarter of solo kick drum. I thought this was a bold and exciting concept which only fell down in its execution because the other members of Reef insisted on playing their instruments and singing (apparently unamplified - from what I could hear anyway) in the background. A bit more recently I saw Alterbridge at the same venue. Not quite so bad a mix (although the bass was that vague inaudible low rumble) but for some reason the sound guy liked the sound of a kick drum enough that he'd eq'd the snare into such a dull thud that it was almost indistinguishable from the kick. Best live sounds I've experienced where the bass has been clear and defined and at an appropriate level in the mix have been Glenn Hughes all 3 times I've seen him and likewise Greenday the 3 times I've also seen them.
12.
I can't comment on the otherwise bit. Have you a photo of that too please? Maybe it's a well known brand but I don't get out much.
It's a Laurus. Federico Malaman can be seen playing one in a lot of his videos. 13. Our drummer was working on a demolition site about 4 years ago. When he was clearing out one of the basements he found an old Marshall Combo just buried under a pile of junk. The site manager was happy for him to take it away just to save a bit of space in a skip so he took it home with him. He ended up getting £2600 for it in a non working condition from a dealer/repairer so what it would have been worth working and to a collector I can only imagine.
14. Probably Hold The Line by Toto. Nothing complicated or difficult to play but plenty of movement to the bass line and a really nice groove to it. We also get to rock out in the solo and the big outro that we play which is fun. Doesn't hurt that both our singer and our drummer absolutely nail it too. I'm not the only one either. Despite not being as typical a crowd pleaser as a lot of the rest of the set, it always gets a really good response from the punters.
15. How about this turd on a stick as modeled by Mr Lomenzo?
16. One of those but with a maple fingerboard please! Really like the look of these.
17. Hohner B2a > Marlin branded cable that came with the bass when I got it second hand > 10W Goodmans double cassette deck karaoke machine that belonged to the drummer. Kinda glad there was nobody there but the barman to hear it now! Second gig (which was my first paid gig - I got £10) Aria Pro 2 Magna Series > same cable > Laney Linebacker 30W combo. By comparison that combo sounded absolutely amazing!
18. I've found my Snark pedal copes with the low B better than any other tuner I've tried (and I've tried most of them). I can't actually tell any difference in the way it responds to the B at all compared to the other strings. Nice clear display too.
19. I'm about 25 miles from Norwich itself but have a gig in the city this Saturday. Obviously depends where abouts in Norwich it is but if there's anything I can do to help send me a PM.
20. I bought my Squier VM P5 because I wanted a traditionally styled P bass but I needed a 5 string (haven't played a 4 string for the best part of 20 years now). There's not a lot of choice out there in the way of 5 string precisions and the Fender equivalent was over £1200 more which I didn't feel I could really justify at the time. Fortunately for me I absolutely love it. Genuinely the most comfortable neck I've ever played (and I've owned some very expensive basses over the years and played a fair few more). I have made some modifications to the electronics and I'd like to upgrade the pickup at some point but for feel and playability it's excellent.
21. I find these YouTube Rig Rundown videos can be quite an interesting watch and was thinking that a lot of members here have a list of gear in their signatures but the way we all use our gear can vary quite a bit. Thought it might be interesting to hear how you use your gear through the signal chain and why in a kinda Rig Rundown style. My gigging setup is as follows:- Firstly 3 basses (all five strings): Sterling SUB Ray 5 - use this one on most of the songs we play. Bright, aggressive sound that punches through the mix clearly. Squier Vintage Modified Precision 5 (modified with an added Dan Armstrong Yellow Humper active circuit) - gets used on about 8 or 9 songs where it either needs a more 'oldschool' sound or just to sit back in the mix a bit more. Fender Modern Player Jazz 5 - gets used on the 2 or 3 songs that I play with a pick and has the strap set longer to be more comfortable for pick playing. Planet waves guitar cable into the pedal board. Pedals - powered by a Harley Benton Power Plant Junior: Snark pedal tuner.> Palmer Deepressor compression pedal. Aside from compression this also has a -10dB pad button which helps with the really hot output of the Ray.> MXR M80 Bass DI+. Aside from EQ, this allows me to balance the volume between my 3 basses. It's off for the precision so the other 2 are set relative to that. The clean channel is set for the Ray. The distortion channel is set for the jazz but with the drive on minimum and then blended into the clean which gives it a kind of Sansamp sound.> EHX Steel Leather. Use this with the precision on a low setting just to add a little definition.> EBS Octabass. Just use this to get a synthy sound for when we play Uptown Funk.> Palmer Ubertreiber overdrive. Normally just used on the odd line here or there unless we play Ace of Spades.> Joyo Roll Boost. Clean boost for any parts that need to stand out. Another Planet Waves cable to the amp. Aguilar AG500 head. I don't really use the distortion channel. The distortion itself is okay but I don't really get on with the EQ. The clean channel though sounds great. Very clear and really strong mids. Loads of volume on tap and no lack of heft (sorry). Runs through a pair of Aguilar DB112 cabs. Not super lightweight but small enough to be very manageable and without compromising on sound. This little amp setup manages in a decent sized venue without going through the PA and the volume normally stays below 10 o'clock in a VERY loud rock band. Took a while to write that all out but would anyone else care to share their own Rig Rundown?
22. It's all my childhood best friend's fault. He got a drum kit for Christmas (which he picked up and got very good at very quickly indeed) and wanted someone to jam with. I'd had piano lessons so assumed he'd want me to play keys which didn't really appeal to me but he was really into Nirvana at the time so was thinking more of guitar. He lent me an old steel strung acoustic that only had the low E and A strings on it and gave me a copied cassette of Nirvana Unplugged I've always had a good ear for music and within a week I'd learnt to play every song on that album well enough to at least play along. Turns out though that I'd actually learnt the bass lines. I'd been listening to Quadraphenia a lot and it was the bass in it that I was drawn to (even though I didn't even know it was a bass) so it made sense to me to learn that same part of these songs. Fortunately my mate was just as happy to jam with a bass player as a guitarist and actually lent me the money to buy my first bass (a Hohner B2a).
23. The only bass I've ever experienced any significant amount of neck dive with was my old acoustic which was hardly surprising given the lack of weight in a hollow body to balance out the neck. Fortunately I only ever used it for learning songs sat down at home and never on a strap so a bit of a non issue really.
24. I've also just received a strap from Martyn. Honestly couldn't have been an easier transaction. Thanks again!
