I travel to gigs mostly on the Tube in London and can just about be bothered to take one bass with me lol
I'm just glad I don't play fretless too to be honest!

1. Squier VM P5. 2. Sterling SUB Ray5 3. Fender Modern Player Jazz 5 All three of these get used at every gig. The Jazz I just use for the 2 or 3 songs I play with a pick. After that it's a bit weird. I class the Squier P as my number one because it's the one bass of the 3 that I'd happily use for every song in our set if I had to, but the Ray actually gets used on more songs. On those songs though I only marginally prefer the Ray but on most of the songs where I use the P it's because I very much prefer it over the Ray - if that makes any sense at all.
Next you'll be saying that this isn't cool... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcGNqrAtsgg I dunno, you whipper-snappers.
I'll have you know I had all the action figures thank you very much! No matter how cool that cartoon, or indeed any of the other 80s cartoons I loved enough to get up early for on a Saturday morning back then might be, I don't think any of them would have inspired a stage name that I'd care to use.
Given that it has no Master Volume it's supposed to stay clean up to really high volumes, since the volume knobs control the gain stage, while the power section permanently runs full throttle. Edti: Wait, it does have Master Volume. But that can be switched off, which is good!
Oh dear I was afraid of that. I've been Gas free for a while now but that's not helping. The EQ had better turn out to be poorly voiced for bass or Mrs Painy is gonna be getting upset with me

I'd be interested to hear how well it holds together at volume. I do like a bit of tube warmth but only really a little bit of hair. Obviously as a guitar amp this will be designed to break up into full distortion when driven but would 150W give enough headroom to keep things at least fairly clean sounding at gig volume if needed or would we be talking full on Lemmy levels of distortion at bedroom levels?

Hmmm. I think using the stage name 'Thundercat' might reduce his overall level of coolness somewhat though. Kinda reminds me of that drummer Thunderstick that used to play with Samson. He definitely wasn't cool!
Just thought that I would mention the Musicians Hearing Health Scheme. If you are a working player (and I'm not sure how loosely that needs to fit) then this scheme is brilliant! http://www.musicianshearingservices.co.uk/musicians-union/musicans-hearing-health-scheme/ Hearing check and custom made moulded earplugs for £40. Definitely worth investigating!!!
Well I for one will be looking into this. Recently started using IEMs and have been thinking about getting custom molds to use with them so this could be an affordable way to go about it - not to mention the hearing check as I already suffer with tinnitus and fairly significant hearing loss which I'd prefer to halt in its tracks.

Albums you think are crap but are critically acclaimed...
Painy replied to julesb's topic in General Discussion
The hype surrounding The Arctic Monkeys' first album had me completely baffled at the time and I still don't get it (or anything they've done since) now. Edit:- Woo-hoo!!! 1000 posts! -
I've read a description of Cliff Burton's playing where he was said to have had a "volcanic bass technique".

I gigged with a Line6 Bass Pod xt-Pro into a QSC 1450c power amp for a few years. Went back to heads eventually because I was never 100% happy with the sound but that was more down to the Pod. If I still had the amp I think I'd have fun running different pre-amp pedals straight into it to get different sounds.

Now that's a rig that looks like it means business!

I think I need to give it a few more listens to give it a chance but hasn't grabbed me at the first listen the way Rock Dust Light Star did. To be honest though I'm not sure it has the kind of mass appeal they may have been hoping for.

I know I should but I'd be worried it could become something of an Addiction and I'd end up following the tour from Coast To Coast. I'm sorry. I'm try and leave off the puns..... ....From Now On.
Honourable mention for Yolanda Charles http://youtu.be/pTvMoA1GyV4
Not sure if it's any measure of coolness as such but I do think I may be a little bit in love with her.

Well my earphones have arrived and for the money I'm very impressed so far (I will be looking to get something better in due course if these don't cut it though). They are pretty much what I'd hoped for - which is to say a flat, more focused bass response than my Sennheiser earphones (which are meant for general music listening rather than designed for use as stage IEMs) and very clear, crisp and precise in the mids and highs. So far I've only tried them listening to music on my phone and with my bass through my practice amp so yet to see how they fare at a gig (no gig this weekend either which is always the way when I get a bit of new kit I want to try out) but I'll report back after next week's gig.
The other thing that has me reaching for the off button is anything by The Doors: turgid, monotonous, self indulgent meanderings, I really don't understand their appeal or level of success.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this. I find Jim Morrison's voice to be a bit of a disinterested drone a lot of the time too to be honest. Most of my mates seem to love them and I'm glad they enjoy it but can't abide their music at all myself.

Seen him live 3 times now. My favorite vocalist without question and I think a very underrated bass player too. Far funkier than any pick player has any right to be. I find it astounding that his voice and range haven't deteriorated at all despite him being well into his 60s and if anything it seems stronger than ever - something that can't be said for the majority of his contemporaries. Unfortunately though it looks like I'll miss him This Time Around - you see what I did there?
-
Will do. Is seems that the complaints about excessive treble were mainly from people using them as headphones to listen to recorded music rather than for stage monitoring but we shall see. Apparently burning them in for 24 hours softens the treble too so I'll probably give that a go. I'll leave a review on here once I've tried them out.

Calling Trace Anoraks - Late AH300-12 vs Later AH600-12
Painy replied to Deedee's topic in Amps and Cabs
wasn't the SMX just the preamp? then they bolted on different power amps, I've sot a SMX 12 EQ with an AH200 power amp
The AH bit does refer to the power section eg. AH400 = Amp Head 400 (power in Watts obviously). SMX is the dual band compressor. The pre-amp is designated by the gp12 (or gp7, Series 6 etc) bit. Hence the full model name of the AH400 is actually: gp12 AH400 SMX. Really wish I hadn't sold mine . -
Well I personally am really really happy to see this particular new offering from TE. I sold my old AH400SMX to our lead guitarist's younger brother years ago but borrowed it for a gig when my old Ampeg packed in about 18 months ago and realised I had been stupid to sell it. Basically the sound was what I'd been trying to get from a host of other amps without any success ever since I sold it. My current Aguilar rig which I subsequently bought has taken quite a bit of time for me to get the best out of it but recently I've finally been properly happy with the sound I've been getting from it. And that's why I'm so happy to see this as TE's comeback - because it doesn't appeal to me even in the slightest and I can just carry on enjoying what I have instead of Gassing for something else.

Right, sorted. Thanks guys.
The drummer i play with (also a lecturer in music, music tech and stuff) recommends these https://www.amazon.co.uk/MEE-Earphone-Replaceable-Universal-Microphone/dp/B00SLVB71Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1485113493&sr=8-2&keywords=m6+headphones
Oooo, pretty!!! That looks just the ticket, thanks! Just read a few reviews which seem to share the view that these are very pronounced on the treble side (overly so in fact according to a couple of reviews) but the cheap wireless system we're using could really do with more presence in the highs anyway so could actually be a good match. For £38 delivered I reckon these are worth a punt.
Citronic dual driver headphones. Around £15 delivered from eBay. Awesome bang for the buck! I prefer them to some of the more expensive sets I have 😉 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291914048062
Hmm. That really is cheap. Do they color the sound at all and how well do they handle bass? I had seen them on eBay but if I'm honest I'd discounted them on price as likely to be cheap and nasty but would be great if that's not the case.

My band's lead vocalist and myself have recently started using IEMs at gigs. The headphones that came with the wireless systems we're using (Thomann's budget t-bone package) are complete and utter garbage so we've been using our own earbuds for the time being. They are far better quality but as they were designed for general use rather than as IEMs they color the sound far too much so I'm looking for something specifically designed for monitoring but unfortunately it will have to be as cheap as possible. I've been looking at the t-bone EP4s on Thomann which have good reviews and at around £50 they're certainly inexpensive but is there anything else I should be looking at? I could add another £10-20 if it would get me something noticeably better but that's pretty much all Mrs Painy will let me get away with spending right now.
