Mine is 9lb 5oz. Fairly reasonable for a 5 string to be fair but then I've never liked the feel of light basses anyway - they anyways seem kind of insubstantial to me.
However I tend to garnish mine with chopped parsley and a touch of vinaigrette....
That's a bit posh! Salad cream and a bit of iceberg lettuce on my strings thank you very much! Used strings wouldn't be much use to me. The only reason I don't put a fresh set of rounds on for every gig is the cost. The Fender flats on my precision weren't that expensive anyway so I was quite happy to pay the new price and not have to worry about whether the previous owner had suffered from leprosy! This is also a good reason to check that, when someone is selling a Thumb, they're actually talking about a Warwick.

Stuff I've sold that I often wish I had back: Bass Connection SGC Nanyo SB315 Yamaha RBX765a Yamaha TRB5 II Warwick Streamer Stage 1 5 Trace Elliot AH400SMX But what I'd really like is what the Streamer (the only thing on the list that I couldn't actually afford to buy again right now) would cost to buy new now (at current RRP) in cash!

I'd go P-neck / M-bridge personally but have the bridge pup coil-tappable to a single coil for a J bridge pup sound.
Which circuit did you add? As much as I love this bass a bit more versatility would come in handy.
It's actually an old Dan Armstrong Yellow Humper which I had modified so I could install it into the bass. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/287810-activificating-my-p-bass-special-thanks-to-kiogon/page__fromsearch__1

Glad I prefer maple boards then! Although now I come to think of it, part of the reason I prefer maple is that it's slightly less common which may now cease to be the case in future. Blast! -
Well as it's Christmas I've treated myself and ordered an Olympic White Squier VM Precision from Thomann. £250 !!! They can't make them for that surely???? Thanks for all the assistance guys, much appreciated.
Be interested to hear how you find it when you get it. If you like it half as much as I love mine you won't be able to put it down.
Well to be honest I banned him so I can have the investment opportunity (he's building a dam and needs my help) all to myself. See you on the flipside, losers!
Aren't their cabs now supposed to be designed in conjunction with Turbosound since Behringer bought them out? Not sure if they really are involved in the design or if they're just taking advantage of owning the rights to the brand name though.
Had no idea the nut was so narrow on the OPs' Vintage, 42.5mm !! Dirt cheap option could be the 5 string PJ from Thomann £108. At least it goes to 45mm. Painy on post #3 has one maybe he could give you the lowdown Or their Ray type model. Again £108 and 45mm nut. https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_mb_5_sb_deluxe_series.htm
I was really impressed with the playability of the Harley Benton when I first got it and the tone is pretty good too to be honest but the pickups are pretty weak output-wise and at some point the J pup has stopped working (probably just a lose wire or something but I only gigged it about half a dozen times before it went under the bed so that's not great. The spacing at the bridge is about the same as my Squier but it is a fair bit tighter at the nut although it's also quite a bit chunkier front to back. Normally when one bass costs 3 times as much as another the question is, "Is it 3 times as good?" In this case though, comparing the Squier to the Harley Benton, I'd actually say easily yes and then some. Personally I'd say the Harley Benton isn't a bad bass for the money whereas the Squier is a good bass full stop.

Last year my old Ampeg died during our soundcheck but the built in DI was still working so we got through the gig with the bass going FOH only. Unfortunately our little 100W 1x12 powered wedges really aren't man enough for anything more than vocals so I could only hear what was in the FOH mix. Not an experience I'd be in any hurry to repeat at all! This morning though I ordered myself a wireless IEM system to use mainly for vocals (our lead singer got the same system a few weeks ago and loves it) so at least if that situation ever happened again I'd be able to hear myself properly. Personally though I much prefer the sound of my bass coming through my amp than the sound we got from the PA - given the choice.

Squier Vintage Modified Precision 5 string.

They really are fantastic basses aren't they - and at any price IMHO. I've added a switchable active circuit to mine which makes it more versatile but keeps the character of the sound intact and chrome covers purely for looks but I gigged it un-modified very happily for a good while. It's actually my favorite of all the basses that I've owned (which has included some pretty high end stuff over the years) so nice to see someone else feeling the love for these humble Squiers.
Mrs Zero and I occasionally play in a ceilidh band at barn dances (she does the calling). Whenever she introduces a move called the chain, I think it's fairly obvious what I start playing.
Oooo, is it this? http://youtu.be/6M6W2NyD02o -
Love it. Way better than the tree my mate has just posted up on facebook:-

I'm another one that had a Linebacker 30 combo. It was my first actual bass amp (before that I played through an ancient guitar combo badged as a Tone which was probably about 10 watts and had a built in tremolo, a Goodmans double cassette deck home karaoke machine and then a 15 watt Soundcity solid state guitar combo that my step-dad found at the local dump). I actually gigged it for a good while. I found that by turning the bass all the way down and the mid and treble all the way up I could run it on full volume without it distorting and actually get loud enough and cut through enough to be heard. Not sure it was a tone you particularly wanted to hear with the eq like that to be fair but it got me through until I got something a bit better.

When I've used our guitarist's Pitchblack in the past I've found it didn't pick up my low B without having to play the 12th fret harmonic. My Snark pedal tuner on the other hand picks up the low B (and all the other notes too of course) perfectly every time. Nice clear display too.

Get your bets in now on next year's recipient being that bloke off Britain's Got Talent who did the rap about not being able to find his keys or his phone. I actually quite like most of the songs from the first 2 albums if I'm completely honest (alright, not Angels then) but he does seem a bit of an odd choice to me.

P bass, first time using flats - EQ help needed!
As a side note, I love these Angel Dust reviews. It's the way they take the backing out and sometimes the 'in the mix' sound is so different to the bass on it's own.
Works really well doesn't it! -
When I saw RHCP at Hyde Park a few years back (with James Brown supporting), Flea and John Frusciante did a short rendition just Flea on Bass and John on vocals. Flea managed to play it with fingers and from the view on the big screens he was playing every note himself! Did look like hard work though!
Roll the tone on the bass back a bit to lose the clatter, and don't go nuts with the EQ.
I was taking Lozz's suggestion to mean fairly subtle adjustments - only as much as really needed kinda thing. I don't normally touch the tone on the bass as I generally find backing off too much sounds muffled but I can see how a touch here might help so I'll give that a go too, thanks . -
The AG is a fairly mid-forward amp so I`d look at dropping some of the high mids in the Contour and maybe a touch off of the regular mids. Adding in the Deep but cutting a bit of Bass could help too as imo (I have the AG500 as well) the 40Hz is too low, so cutting eliminates boom.
I'll give that a try, thanks. I'd kinda been working on the premise that it's the characteristic of the mids that I was looking to hear so was actually pushing the mids - of course it could also well be the specific frequencies the mid control boosts aren't the frequencies I want and could therefore actually be overpowering them instead? Much appreciated! -
you cant try and equate the two environments and expect to achieve same results - just treat each one on its own merits and adjust accordingly
To be fair I'm not trying to recreate the sound I'm getting at home as such - the headphones I use actually color the sound quite a bit anyway. It's more the fact that I'd expect that classic P bass hollow mid-range characteristic sound to come through naturally with everything flat and then just tweak to taste. At the moment though it's just sounding a bit nondescript . -
No - I doubt anyone in the audience has noticed any bass players any more than they are noticing me!
A woman came up to me after last night's gig and asked if I was the guitarist or the bass player. She might not have been able to tell the difference but I was still impressed that she was even aware that there is a difference! As far as using other people's lines is concerned I play in a covers band so not the easiest thing to avoid. -
I recently strung my Squier VM P5 with Fender flats and I'm enjoying the feel and the sound through headphones with my practice amp at home but I'm struggling to get the best out of it through my gigging rig. The sound I'm looking for is I'd say a fairly classic P bass tone. This video from the start is a good example and 30 second in cuts the backing so you can hear the bass more clearly: http://youtu.be/21dVIXg5tb8 And this is what I have to work with - the second channel on my Aguilar AG500. This is the distortion channel but with the saturation all the way down just adds a tiny amount of tubey breakup which I quite like. I'm also considering upgrading the pickup in the bass but I'd like to see if I can get there with what I have first so any suggestions, at least as a starting point, would be much appreciated.
