1. Slash's guitar bends at the end of November Rain have allways set my teeth on edge.
2.
I've always subscribed to the view... Not cool at Wembley, not cool at the Hammersmith Odeon (I'm old) but equally not cool at Bob and Mary's wedding or at the Dog & Ferret.
+1 Also, if a string breaks then more often than not it'll be fairly old which means a bright new string will stick of like a sore thumb if you just change the one. Changing all of them would I'd imagine be a bit much even at the coolest of venues so I'd rather just grab another bass and carry on.
3.
I have no idea what this gif is, but that YT clip is the perfect soundtrack for it.
Awesome!
4. I signed up yesterday after seeing this on the Aguilar owners group on facebook. Went around the house afterwards looking for old string packets so I could input the codes to get the points. Ended up with a pile of about a dozen old Prosteels packets (I'm rubbish for hoarding old strings - just in case!!) Only to realize the codes are actually on the plastic anti-corrosion packet (which I hadn't kept) not on the cardboard outer packet
5. Just to echo Dad's sentiments there. I enjoyed that very much!
6.
Ask for £ 1 000 000 advanced payment
7. I've done it myself and it's really not that difficult. Just need the tolex, a sharp knife and some spray adhesive. I've not looked but I'd imagine there'll be how to videos on YouTube.
8. Last (and fortunately only so far) time our drummer's bass drum pedal failed he was able to carry on just playing left footed as he uses a double pedal.
9. Over the last 20 years I've played well over 1000 gigs with my band (probably closer to 1300 including those played with other bands along the way) so fair to say playing live to an audience with a band is my personal main drive to play. These days my band has cut back to 20-30 gigs a year due to family commitments but I seem to spend all my time between gigs trying to find any moment I can grab to pick up my bass. If I'm really lucky I might be able to persuade my wife to let me set my amp up in the kitchen and have a play with my tone for half an hour. Ultimately though it's all in preparation for the next gig. Fortunately for me my 3 closest friends in the world are my band-mates (lead guitarist has been my best mate since high school and was best man at my wedding last year).
10. I think it holds up pretty well to be honest and very simple to use. That simplicity means it's probably not the most versatile comp but what it does do, I think it does very well. My Sub Ray 5 has a very hot pre-amp which the pad helps with but the low B is for some reason still much hotter than the other strings even with the pup lowered on that side. The comp evens things out between the strings nicely and effectively makes the B string usable. It adds some nice note definition and punch but without losing your original tone. As the Ovnilab review says, the attack is quite slow even at the lowest settings but I like to preserve as much of the initial attack as possible so works really well for me. I'd say that Palmer's own YouTube video for it is actually a pretty accurate demo.
11. I've been using a Palmer Deepressor for a while now and despite being quite an affordable and simple pedal I'm really liking it. The pad button helps to tame the overly hot pre-amp on my Sterling Sub Ray for a start. Probably not the most fashionable compressor but it evens things out nicely without squashing too much and adds a lovely punch. I've also found it to be surprisingly quiet.
12. I've always had a spare bass on stage in case of string breakage but kept the spare with a longer strap for the couple of songs I play with a pick for a more comfortable position. Recently I've been using my Ray with very bright new rounds for most of the set but there are several songs that it's just too aggressive sounding, so for those I'm using my P with flats. I'm planning to bring my jazz to the next gig for the pick songs which will mean 3 basses on stage. Nothing to do with showing off though, the stand with be tucked out of the way on stage where the punters can't see it anyway.
13. I love the gloss necks on my Squier VM P and Fender Modern Player J. Neither are remotely expensive basses and I've never found them to be at all sticky. My Sterling Sub Ray has a satin neck which does feel great to play too but I'd prefer it if it was gloss - just not quite enough to bother getting it refinished.
14. Glenn Hughes - Push (or pretty much any song off the feel album).
15. I already posted this elsewhere a couple of days ago but thought I'd add this in here too. At last week's gig the owner of the venue was videoing us on his phone and streaming it live to facebook. Starts with a bit of disjointed footage of the end of Hold the Line but then you get the whole of Boys Are Back in Town and Boys of Summer. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10154649100138698&id=641458697 And just to prove it did get busy later on https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10154649301518698&id=641458697
16. As teenagers we would play everywhere and anywhere that would have us just because we wanted to play as much as possible. We would happily play a country pub in the middle of nowhere to 6 people for beer and petrol money. We honed our skills and built a reputation and a following and were soon playing 100-150 gigs a year but to bigger crowds and/or for better money. These days we've all got families so we've cut back to 25-30 gigs a year but it does allow us to be much more selective which gigs we do. We never go out for less than £300 now but we can still choose only to play venues that will generally have a decent crowd and still maintain that level of gigging. I do consider myself very lucky to be in that position but if I had to make the choice? For the feeling I get when the band is really on it, you connect with the audience and the crowd is jumping and my bass and the kick drum together are thumping in my chest cavity - for that I'd happily pay good money!
17.
I once saw an advert for a Stagg Les Paul Custom selling for £300 with the ad stating they were £1,800 new! Seriously hope no-one fell for that one.
You mean I was ripped off when I bought that? Blast! Oh well, at least I can make some of the money back on that nice vintage Satellite bass that I picked up for the bargain price of £1000.
18.
Oh, man! Almost everything about this shouted "Rock!" Then why the Hull did you open that "Penis Size Reduction" spam mail, and click on the "Buy A 5-String Now" link? (PS Great pics, and I love my Ray 5-H)
Well I had to do something if I didn't want to keep getting arrested every time I wore shorts in public! They are great basses though. Just got this a couple of weeks ago and I'm loving how the aggressive bite in the tone really cuts through.
19. No problem, I'll bear that in mind in future. And thanks for your graciousness in leaving it here for a bit to get noticed .
20. At last week's gig the owner of the venue was videoing us on his phone and streaming it live to facebook so thought I'd share a link for anyone that's interested. Starts with a bit of disjointed footage of the end of Hold the Line but then you get the whole of Boys Are Back in Town and Boys of Summer. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10154649100138698&id=641458697 And just to prove it did get busy later on: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10154649301518698&id=641458697
21. I used to own a very lovely Streamer Stage 1 fiver which would cost somewhere in the region of £5.5k at the current prices. I bought mine new online from Dolphin Music in 2005 for just £1600! Just wish I had a time machine.
22. I used a Line6 Bass Pod XT pro as a multi effects unit (with the amp modeling bypassed) for a good few years. One night at a gig, the cable connecting the Pod to the amp started crackling and I didn't have a spare so went straight into the amp and it sounded absolutely awesome. A couple of years ago though I started to really miss having a few effects but decided to go with individual pedals. Soon discovered that I didn't like what most buffered pedals did to my tone at all but I could get away with using all true bypass pedals if I used active basses.
23.
Strictly speaking there's no reason a Chinese Fender should be any more 'a Fender' than a Chinese Squier.
There is one thing at least. Fender use a thicker slab of wood for the bodies than Squier and this is true wherever they're manufactured so the body of my Chinese built Fender Modern Player Jazz is still something like 1/4" deeper than my Squier VM precision. For what it's worth though, I prefer the Squier.
24.
I got a Palmer Ubertreiber from the classifieds recently. Fab drive pedal as it has a wet/dry blend....
I really do think the Soul Food is a fantastic drive pedal for a really good price but I had both the Ubertreiber and the Soul Food on my board and it was the Ubertreiber that stayed. I also have a Palmer Deepressor which I absolutely love - great sounding and really solidly built pedals for a really good price. 25. Chap I know who used to run a small music shop has a crazy rig that included a trace 4x10 cab, a Peavey 2x15 Black Widow loaded cab and a homemade cab containing a 24" speaker that he salvaged from an old electric organ. Not sure if he ever actually plugged the 24 in but the visual effect alone had quite an impact.
