John was good enough to repair (and slightly modify) an old Dan Armstrong Yellow Humper circuit for me. He did a brilliant job of sorting it out. In spite of my making it clear that there was no rush at all, he still had the job done really quickly. Lovely guy to deal with and kept me well updated. Genuinely deserving of his excellent reputation on here and in future he will definitely be my first port of call for anything similar. Thanks again
You also get the opportunity to be 'creative' when filling out the customs declaration in case the value is over the VAT duty threshold!
It's just over a fiver so in this case I reckon I'm probably safe -

That would be brilliant if we could work something out and you'd be willing to help. PM incoming shortly! -
Ebay seller only ships to US - How to get the item to me?
Painy posted a topic in General Discussion
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on this front. After much searching I have finally found on eBay an all-elusive chrome bridge cover to suit a five string bridge (for my Squier VM P5). Unfortunately the seller (based in China) have confirmed that they will only ship to the US. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it forwarded on to me here in the UK as I don't have any friends or family out there? -
Adding a little bit of gain, rather than a completely clean sound can help on this as well.
Definitely. I find that if my tone sounds good solo it is often a bit lost in the mix but a touch of subtle drive from my Bass Soul Food pedal adds a lot of harmonics and presence to the sound which really cuts through and actually gives much better note definition.
I was hoping it was his new one with the mm pickup.
+1 Still looks nice though!

I think that looks great personally. I know people will question how authentic the wear pattern is etc but if you look at it as a finish option or a style (which is what it should be) rather than trying to create some kind of fake vintage bass then I think it works really well.

Help Needed - someone good with circuitry/soldering?
Have you tried a PM to our expert in this field, KiOgon..? He would be my first port of call for such a project; he can only refuse, right..? Good luck with your project.
Good call. Thanks Dad! -
I'm hoping to beg a massive favour from a suitably technical BC'er if possible. I recently stumbled across an old bit of kit which I'd like to make use of but I foolishly took it apart back when I was at school and I'll openly say I don't really have the skill (or even a working soldering iron at the moment as it goes) to get it back together. It's an old Dan Armstrong Yellow Humper which originally came in a little box with Jack socket on the front and plug sticking out the back - the idea being to plug it directly into the bass and then the lead from it to the amp. A 3 way toggle switch then gave the option of bass boost/off/Bass and treble boost. Looked really stupid plugged in like that but sounded awesome. Anyway, my plan at the time was simply to install it into my bass wired directly to the Jack socket. That's still the plan but most of the wires are disconnected and I'm hoping someone might be kind enough to put it back together for me if I send it to them? I do have a schematic for the circuit which should help and it's all there apart from a 9v battery terminal. Obviously some form of repayment for your assistance can be negotiated - so any volunteers?

My cheap and cheerful Chinese built Fender Modern Player Jazz would be my recommendation if you had to go with just one bass (although it's sadly now discontinued) mainly for the versatility of it's individually coil tappable twin humbuckers. The neck pickup solo'd in humbucking mode and with the tone rolled off a touch, while not an exact P tone, certainly comes much closer than the standard single coil J pup does. Both pickups in single coil obviously sounds like a jazz while both as humbuckers just sounds like a beefier jazz. My favorite trick at the moment though is to solo the bridge humbucker and add an EHX Knockout pedal for a really good Stingray tone. All that said though, since I got my precision I actually just use that for 9 out off ten songs in our set!

Just watched the Dark Necessities video on YouTube and I think this might be a bit of a grower. Think I might have to get the album and give it a proper listen.

Search Ebay for Caline Power Supply. Only £18.99 currently on there and I've been using mine for about a year now with no problems at all. Has to come from China so might take a couple of weeks but if you can cope with that then I couldn't recommend it any more highly.

I play guitar, keys and drums to a passable standard largely now just for fun and jamming purposes but all were learnt initially as a means to improve my bass playing. I guess I could therefore technically class myself as a multi instrumentalist but to be honest I'd actually consider myself to be a bassist/vocalist in fairly equal measure (although I reckon bass would edge it if I was pushed).
I've said to myself: you cannot just stare at this bass in awe indefinitely, started rehearsing sinse March, and gigged it first time last week (twice)
Any objection to me just staring in awe at it indefinitely then? I really like that rather a very lot!!!
Note to all. Lemon oil does not taste as nice as it should.
My wife had some Body Shop chocolate facial scrub once that was a bit like that. Very disappointing. Edit: I suspect it wouldn't have been much use on my fretboard either.
Is it only me that thinks he sounds the same no matter what bass he's playing!? (great)
Generally I'd agree apart from that tuition video on YouTube where's he's teaching how to slap on a flea bass. Not keen on the sound coming out of that bass at all personally but maybe that's just me.

Booming from rear ports - suggestions? Problem now solved!
Painy replied to Painy's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well after trying just about everything suggested here and a few other things besides it turned out I just needed to look for the root cause rather than trying to treat the symptoms. It seems a slight tweak of my basses' set-up was what was needed. With my action being pretty low it seems some of the lows were being choked out which meant I was having to compensate by turning up the bass on the eq. Any time I then played with a little less attack (or just played an open string) the notes were choking less and the bass was booming out. Half a turn of the Allen key on the saddles was all it took to get the notes ringing true, bass then turned down on the eq and all is well with the world again! Edit: Guitarist will obviously also position himself elsewhere next time we're at that venue -
Wasn't it because MusicMan wouldn't give him a signature model ?
I read an interview with him (and Dave Navarro) at the time he'd just been given his first signature Modulus and he clearly stated exactly this.

I think that looks pretty good. Better than some of the factory produced relic instruments I've seen in fact. Nice job!

I remember hearing once that the best thing to use is sebum - the oil your skin produces naturally. The only problem is having to employ a teenager to be on permanent standby so you have a ready supply.
I've found that it's very easy for something to sound better when boosting EQ simply because it's louder, louder nearly always sounds better that's another reason why it's better to cut the frequencies you don't want rather than boost the ones you do. So for instance if you're after a scooped sound just cut the centre frequencies more and leave the others flat
Very much this. I've been spending a lot of time working on my tone recently after a complete change in gear. Kept adding a bit here and a bit there but eventually it started to sound all muddy and mushy. The problem then was when I turned the eq back down it sounded a bit weedy in comparison even though it was clearer. Simply pushing the volume up a bit to get to the same level as it had been with all the boosts in the eq soon had it sounding big and beefy again but retaining the clarity.
Ordered! Tell me.....how did you do it? Did you draw a template?
Just stick it straight on as it is (watch out for air bubbles though) then trim around carefully with a sharp blade like a Stanley knife keeping the flat of the blade against the beveled edge and run it all the way around.
