1. Angled at the bass end, straight at the amp end. Am I the only one that initialy misread the thread title as straight plugs or anal plugs?
2. To be honest when I first found out that the guitarist replacing JF was Josh Klinghoffer I was just relieved that I'd initially misheard the name because at first I thought it was this guy:
3.
opens third pack of hob nobs.........
I hope you brought enough for everybody!!! Got any dark chocolate ones?
4.
I've been through the "smallest possible gigable setup" thing over the last year or so... I found 1x 112 to not quite be enough for me. I went from 2x 112, to a 210 to my current set up of 2x 110s, which is super portable and easily loud enough for my needs. The whole rig weighs 16kg.
Have you thought about attaching the cabs to a headband and wearing them like headphones? Convenient for moving them around by public transport, would undoubtedly sound better than a pair of Dr Dre's cans and you'd be at the hight of fashion too!
5. I tend to take the view that the money is for the effort of rehearsing, traveling, unloading, setting up, packing down loading and associated expenses. The actual playing part I do for the love of it. I've often said that if you don't love it then the financial remuneration alone wouldn't make it worthwhile. For 4 hours playing though I think the love of playing itself would start to wear a bit thin and the love of money would have to start to rear its ugly head!
6. Here in Norfolk (and Suffolk when we play there) we get £300 as a starting point for 2x 1hr sets in pubs. We are however one of the longest established bands in the area and can't speak for other bands round here.
7. One of my pet hates is having to thread and feed strings through the bridge. It's a PITA and risks the string scratching the finish behind the bridge. So although the BBOT bridge on my Squier VM P5 works fine I'm thinking of changing it for something quick release but preferably as straight a swap over as possible (6 screws in a line just in front of the back-plate) and that won't look out of place on a precision. Any suggestions that won't cost a fortune given it was a sub £300 bass new?

9. To me heft means the deep lows you feel in your chest cavity not the kind that muds up the sound and blurs your vision in an unpleasant way. Love the tone of my Aguilar AG500 and it does have shed loads of low end available but turning up the bass too far tends to induce the latter type of low end unfortunately. I tend to keep the bass flat on the amp and add any extra lows I might need from the Big Bottom on my Aphex Aural Xciter which adds more of the desirably hefty type of low end.
10.
Parallel then!
Doh!!! Sorry parallel yes. Running at 2 ohms in any case.
11.
That'll shift a bit of air! The tops - you are running the amp the tops in series I presume?
Certainly does! They are indeed in series. Fortunately the amp will happily run down to 2ohms.
12. Very loud rock covers band playing mainly pubs and clubs but with quite a few outdoor/marquee type gigs at beer festivals, biker do's etc. All Peavey apart from the desk which is Yamaha. A pair of 4ohm UL215S bass bins on the bottom powered by a Peavey 2600 and then 2 pairs of 4ohm UL15 cabs for the tops powered by another 2600. Used mainly for vocals and fully mic'd kit bit with the option to put bass and guitars through it when needed.
13.
This is not necessarily true. Those buying copies (marked Fender or not...) may well not be able to afford the 'real thing', or have any number of reasons for preferring another source (Lighter..? Different colour..? 'Better' sounding..?). The sale of a copy is not, every time, a lost sale of a Fender.
The only 'genuine' Fender equivalent of my Squier (being a 5 string precision) currently available is the USA standard which costs more than 5 times the amount new and does not come in sunburst/maple which is my preferred combination. I also prefer the more golden sunburst color of my Squier to the more tobacco colored sunburst on the USA P5. Incidentally my Squier actually came with a small Fender logo on the back of the headstock where it states "Designed and backed by Fender". I just enlarged it and moved it to the other side so it's now 'fronted by Fender' too
14.
I have a split coil Precision pickup on one shoulder. Only fair to point out that it's a Seymour Duncan.
Is it a proper Seymour Duncan though our just 'Duncan Designed'?
15. How does the Trigger's broom scenario fit here? Various bits of a bass get replaced over time until no original parts are left. How far through that process is it okay to continue to call the bass a Fender and how do you decide where to set that boundary? Is it the body and neck that define the bass as a fender? Just the neck? Just the body? Does one original Fender Pickguard screw make it a Fender (clearly not but you get my point)? To use the car analogy I'll bet anyone on here who ever bought a second hand car will quite possibly have bought it with at least one replacement pattern part on there somewhere. How many would it take for you to feel you hadn't bought a genuine Ford/Vauxhall/Perodua or whatever?
16.
A squire is a nice guitar made to a lower budget and hence it says squire not fender. Changing the logo due to aesthetic preference is possibly the most original 'justification' I have ever heard. Anyhow, have to go, have to put a Bentley badge on my chrysler with bentley badge
I'm not trying to justify it as such just explaining the reason I chose to do it. Most murderers have a reason for committing murder but very few could actually justify it after all. I don't actually have to justify it to anyone - it's my bass. I was really trying to raise a point of discussion around the point that even Fender themselves put their logo on products that they haven't actually produced themselves.
17. My two gigging basses are a Squier VM precision 5 string and a Fender modern player Jazz 5 string. I have chosen to add a 70s style Fender logo to the Squier because I personally like the aesthetic of that particular version of the logo. I'm not trying to pass it off as a Fender (especially seeing as Fender have only made a five string precision for a few years anyway so not available in the 70s) and I'd be quite quick to point out it was a Squier if anyone were to ask about it at a gig. Anyway. Neither of these two basses was actually made by fender themselves (the Jazz is Chinese built). The precision is actually more faithful to Fender's original design than the jazz with its twin humbuckers and of the two probably has the marginally better build quality. Does the fact that the company has opted to market the jazz as Fender and the precision as a Squier licensed by fender actually make one more authentic than the other or is it actually a case of it being okay to issue a fake if it's the company itself doing it? Incidentally though they're both brilliant basses and I have no intention of selling either of them to anybody !
18. I think it's the way he makes something so complex and requiring such a high level of dexterity look so effortless. My favorite player by miles. I was lucky enough to see him play live with The Who at Hyde Park in 1996 for their first ever live performance of Quadrophenia. It was a pretty spectacular show with some amazing guest performances but I remember spending the whole time staring at JE with my chin on the floor. I'd been playing less than a year at that point and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Not bad for my first ever gig!
19.
Speaking of P basses, I'll be having a very very special one made in the near future hopefully, will show you all if/when its done!
Wouldn't happen to have a slab body by any chance would it?
20.
You don't need to, I'll let you know. I've asked for it to resemble stings p51 for batteredness and dull paint
That's good of you, thanks. I do like the heavy relic look personally and I can see how Sting's precision would be a good template for that.
21. I use a Snark pedal tuner. Clearest display I've seen on a tuner. Sturdy metal casing, actually detects a low B accurately and easily (unlike our guitarists' much more expensive Korg Pitch-blacks) and inexpensive too. Couldn't recommend it more highly!
22.
You can if it turns out well
I'll keep an eye on this thread then
23. Oh I don't know. At least they won't have to put up with 2 drunk blokes stood chatting to each other in the doorway, oblivious to the fact you're trying to get past carrying a 4x10 with a gigbag over your shoulder and a mic stand in your teeth!
24. Could I ask who it is doing it? Norwich is only about 20 miles from me and there's a bit of relic work I may be considering in future.
25. Having changed around basically all my gear over the last year or so and having struggled to get a sound I was happy with, I've spent quite a bit of time working on getting a good tone over the last few weeks. Well last night I got to enjoy the fruits of my labour. Probably the best bass sound I've ever had! A (slightly drunk admittedly) muso friend kept coming up to me to say how much better my bass sounded than when he came to see us a few weeks ago. Even better we had an enthusiastic crowd up, dancing and singing along from the first song and the band was tight as a duck's bum. Couldn't stop grinning all night !
