1.
I never liked Nirvana. Is there an instrument I should give up, and if so which one?
Can I suggest giving up the guiro? It's basically a useless and pointless instrument which isn't in the least bit musical and doesn't even seem to exist, as far as I can tell at any rate, outside of the school music room anyway. The horrible raspy noise it makes has always set my teeth on edge too so in fact if everyone could kindly give up playing it whether they like Nirvana or not I'd sincerely appreciate it! Sorry, what we're we talking about?
2. The forum is very entertaining at the moment. I'm thinking of starting a thread asking if the bass player from The White Stripes is really all that good and see what reactions I get
3.
I wonder if anyone could come up with the equivalent of a Hipshot drop-D tuner head for all the remaining heads as well so you could flip all 4 or 5 tuners a full step and back again reliably? they probably influence each other too much or mechanically get in each others way maybe?
LeFay actually make one already. If you check out Grant Stinnett on YouTube you can see him use one to good effect playing about with the tuning mid song.
4. There I was all ready to comment on the thread title with some good old fashioned Basschat spelling pedantry, opened the thread and now I've been completely derailed! Tsk!
5. Yeah it is indeed Android. I'll Check for updates then (its driving me nuts)! Cheers.
6. Would you believe just a Squier Vintage Modified Precision 5 string in sunburst for me. Not because of any budget restrictions (hell if Santa is paying, what difference would the price make anyway?) but because that's the one I specifically want. I'm not greedy
7. Unfortunately I can't view any imbedded videos on my phone at the moment so I guess I'm probably missing a few jems here but having great fun going through the suggestions people have made, thanks guys! Any specific suggestions as a starting point Bilbo?
8. Well I've actually just listened to Hejira for the first time ever on YouTube. I'm speechless.
9.
If you want to explore "proper" jazz then you could do worse than downloading this album from iTunes... #1 Jazz Album Ever! by Various Artists https://itun.es/gb/XR-sA At £5.99 for 150 tracks, many of them absolute classics/standards by the pivotal artists in all forms of jazz across the last 80 years, it would be an easy way to dip into different jazz styles to see what you liked. And frankly, if you only liked one in ten tracks you could still hardly say fairer in terms of vfm! Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald, thelonius Monk, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz... They are all there... Plus many more. The perfect dip in dip out sampler.
Ooooooooo! That looks spot on. Thanks for all the other suggestions too guys, gonna keep me busy on YouTube for a bit there too. Speaking of YouTube, any suggestions for 'starter' jazz tutorial videos on there that people could recommend? I'm afraid my standard of reading dots is very much on the slow and laboured side as my usual rock fair I'll just learn by ear so something visual would be great.
10. Damn it! Thought I'd have look to see which ones are up for sale, searched for "Dingwall", and now I can't un-see that white and tort Super P5 - phwooaar!!! Anyhow, if I were you (as opposed to me who'd obviously have the P5) I'd go for the Ferrari yellow to match your Markbass rig
11. Never thought it would happen, been into and played rock, metal and a bit of punk for the last 20 years (but always in fairness still enjoyed most styles of music I've come across to some degree) but jazz has always been a bit of an enigma to me. I've always appreciated the considerable skill demonstrated by those that play it (moondance exempted ) but it's always felt to me more like an interesting technical exercise than any kind of engaging or emotional experience. Just recently though I've been doing a bit of 'YouTube research' into a new amp which lead me to the Aguilar YouTube channel. There seems to be a certain prevalence amongst their demo videos for Fodera toting jazz virtuosos but I decided to have a listen anyway starting with guys I was at least fairly familiar with. Anyway, after watching a couple of videos by Felix Pastorius and Janek Gwizdala, I realised I'd listened to them not to hear how the Aguilar gear sounded as I'd intended, but just enjoying the music. Now I'm not about to hang up my proverbial leather trousers and buy myself a black turtle-neck and beret or anything but does anyone have any suggestions for listening material - ideally bass orientated but preferably not too slap happy? I'd also be interested in hearing any YouTube tuition videos that people can recommend for this style.
12.
Felix is a hell of a player! I recently did an email with him if of interest: http://simonpoulton.tumblr.com And yes, Jaco was really all that, his facility was incredible, his composition and ear was amazing too. Do I like his entire output, no of course not. There's a few videos of him playing Piano too, beautiful playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBhoDaS5SKQ Si
Thanks for that, nice to read an interview that poses relevant questions across a range of topics rather than just focusing on the promotion of an artist's latest venture which seems so prevalent in magazine and tv interviews.
13. I think the Hendrix comparison is pretty much spot on. For me I'd say they're both a bit like a Ferrari Daytona - the modern equivalent has obviously progressed significantly and is more sophisticated and refined and even a modern family hatchback (or bedroom YouTube bassist if you will) can outperform it in many areas. The original however just has something - call it mojo if you like - that is harder to recreate. Personally, being more into rock than jazz, I find Jimi more accessible than Jaco but that's probably more down to genre than playing. That said I'm quite liking his son Felix's playing right now!
14. Hmm, lightweight Trace gear, like the sound of that!
15. My first decent rig was a big AH400SMX 410 115 stack. I got bored of the TE sound after about 5 years gigging it, sold the head to the guitarist's younger brother (who still has it) and traded the cabs for a pair of Hartke XLs. Since then I've been through countless different amps looking for a certain sound including Ashdown, Line 6 and most recently Ampeg. When my Ampeg started playing up earlier this year I borrowed my old Trace had back to cover for a gig and low and behold, it turns out the sound I'd been looking for for the last 15 years was the one I'd had to begin with! Unfortunately, about the same time as I had this epiphany (the revelation kind - not the lovely speaker cabs) my back decided that it couldn't cope with carrying my Ampeg gear around anymore let alone the old Trace stuff so I'm now in the process of sorting out a more compact and lighter weight rig.
16. I'm hoping to be able to post my best rig ever in this thread in the new year

Best tuner pedal

I've used both our guitarists' pitchblack tuners on occasion and it doesn't pick up the low b on my 5 strings so had to tune that string using the 12th fret harmonic. I have a Snark pedal tuner which was about 2 thirds the price of the pitchblack, is very solidly built, has an equally clear display and tracks the low b string (actually down half a step to b flat) perfectly. Couldn't recommend it more highly!
18. I actually run 2 boards together. The large board holds all the 'effects' while the smaller board is where I get my 'core tone' as this runs straight into a power amp so is effectively my main preamp. For me the smaller board is pretty essential obviously but truthfully I could make do without the larger board if I had to. For me though the enhancement that the effects offer do make it worth while and some of the songs that we play like Ace of Spades or Uprising by Muse just don't sound right to me with a clean unaffected bass sound. If we're playing a song that doesn't need effects though, then I simply don't use any on that one.
19.
Aguilar TH350, the high end on these I believe only goes to 4khz.
I'd imagine that would only be the centre of the boosted frequencies for the treble control. The amp would still reproduce frequencies above 4hz if they being sent to it by the instrument.
20.
Well there is one for sale here on BC. It's a fretless but having it fretted is an easy and inexpensive job for a potent luthier / tech. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/270266-warwick-streamer-stage-1-6-fretless-now-l1150/
Exactly this (lovely looking bass too).
21. I like my strings as bright as possible. As I can't afford to replace them as often as I'd like, I do have to confess to boiling them to brighten them back up. When I used to use Rotosounds I'd have to boil them after every gig to keep them zingy but since I've been using D'Addario Prosteels I generally get 3 gigs before they need their first boil and then it's every other gig after that.
22. Just watched Xanadu on YouTube. Until now the most recent live performance I'd seen/heard was the R30 DVD. I'd heard a lot said about Geddy losing his voice but I hadn't realised till now just how badly. He sounds like someone doing a bad impersonation of Geddy Lee! After watching that I can see why they might feel the need to call time on touring. For me the sad part is that Geddy loosing his voice will mean we'll also miss out on his playing.
23. Thanks guys. There's only about £30 difference in price between them on Thomann so probably worth going with the M212 if I do go down the single cab route for the sake of getting maximum lows. Good to hear some positive stuff about the Tecamp cabs too as there seems to be plenty of love for their amps like the Pumas but I've not heard so much about the cabs.
24. Just received the EHX Knockout pedal I bought from Andy. Very smooth easy transaction with clear communication. Top notch guy to deal with. Thanks Andy Painy.
