1. Hello, I was wondering if anyone got a Fender Bassman head near Glasgow that they wouldn't mind me coming to have a quick go on? I've seen a couple of 50W and 100W ones for sale lately and am tempted by the idea of a small-ish all-valve head, but obviously it would be foolish to jump in without actually playing one and seeing if it suits me and seeing if it suits my cab (a Barefaced Compact). If anyone has one and wouldn't mind me coming to try it that would be massively appreciated. I can bring biscuits/beer/other appropriate comestibles, thanks, Matthew
2. I booked two parcels through Interparcel this week. One (UPS) was picked up on time, the other (Hermes) wasn't picked up at all. Interparcel apologised and re-booked it for today, but there's no sign as yet. Fingers crossed.
3. Hello, thanks for the reminder! I had half-forgotten too that I'd advertised this for sale. This reminder has helped me to fall in love with it again so I'm going to get some new strings so I can hear it properly and consider this while giving it more playing time over the next few weeks, so I'll withdraw it for now. Sorry if you're disappointed, but thanks for giving me a reminder that I should be playing it more, Matthew
4. Eude, if you manage to convince your mate that second hand is acceptable, then I am changing round my set up and probably looking to shift my rig: it's a 300W Ashdown ABM head and a Yamaha 2x10 (BBT210), a great, solid, v loud 4 Ohm cab with a tweeter. If he wants that set up for £320 then I can deliver it to him (I'm in Glasgow). If not, I hope he finds what he's looking for. I might be in touch to use the place - I've promised my Edinburgh-based dad (a guitar beginner) that the brother and I will take him to a rehearsal room one day and make lots of noise, so this could be just the place. Matthew
5. That is all brilliant advice, thank you all so much for your time. I now feel pretty ready to head out into the second hand market for some old, heavy, bulletproof gear. Thanks, Matthew
6. Thanks for this guys, this is great advice. Any more from anyone else much appreciated. Matthew
7. Hello, my band is ready to gig on the Glasgow pub circuit, and that means we need a PA. While I would have a reasonable grasp of bass and even guitar kit, I have no idea about PAs and I think I'm probably the most gear-savvy person in the band, so I think heads will turn towards me with quizzical looks when it comes to buying. I hoped you guys could help me with some advice. We will be on a super-tight budget because the band hasn't started earning yet. I see from Gumtree that you can get old beat-up 150W heads and speakers for £100-150 all in, but I don't think we need to go quite that cheap. Probably £200-400 is our available budget. It will be second hand, I imagine. We are a blues four-piece: drums, bass, electric guitar and singer/harmonica player. We are not anticipating mic-ing the instruments, so we'll need to amplify three vocals. There may be a fourth mic if the singer wants to have a mic for his harmonica set to different levels/eq. What I hoped you could help with are questions like: - what wattage will we need to play small-medium pubs (actual pubs rather than big separate function rooms)? - are cheap PAs OK or is it a false economy? What's the difference between a good and bad one? - are we better spending more on the amp/mixer or more on the speakers? - are the all-in-one amps/mixers OK or should they really be separate? - what should we look for when buying second hand – how do you tell a dud? - what should we be looking to spend? - are there any brands we should seek out/avoid? I would really appreciate any guidance you can give. I feel totally out of my depth. Thanks, Matthew
8. This bass is still available, thanks, Matthew
9. Jonny bought a Japanese Fender Jazz from me and was a gentleman throughout the transaction, you can deal with him with confidence.
10. Luke, you're very welcome to come round for a play, whether you're in a buying mood or not. M
11. UPDATE 30/3/12: hello, I'm withdrawing this for now while I consider whether I still want to sell it. Sorry for any confusion (see last two posts), Matthew This is one of the early Fenders to have been made in Japan and one of the ones on which the early reputation of JV instruments was built. This is a Fender JV, not a Squier: it was apparently what was being made for the domestic market when the Fender (Squier Series) ones were being made, and before they were sold as 'Squier by Fender'. It is a beautiful bass, it plays really solidly and evenly and has a rich Precision tone. I am only selling it because I have managed to get my hands on a '62 Precision which has become my main bass. It's in good condition, though as you can see from the pictures the lacquer is cracked in lines on the back and there is a small dunt out out of the top curve. Apart from these cosmetic blemishes it has no issues or problems. I'm looking for £900 plus shipping. It'll come securely packed in a gig bag. Thanks, Matthew
12. This is a lovely Jazz that plays great, sounds great and has all the quality that non-export Jazzes have. The Japanese non-export instruments are widely felt to have a higher spec than the ones made to be sold overseas and this one has US pickups. Its exact model number is JB62 - US OCR. This '62 reissue is in near-perfect nick, it's a deep red with white scratchplate, rosewood fretboard. It sounds great, plays wonderful, has no issues whatsoever. Nothing's been changed by me, and I don't think by the previous owner either. Dating the serial number from Fender's website says it's 1994 or 95, though it doesn't look its age or anything like it. I'm looking for £500 plus shipping; it will come securely packed in a gig bag. Thanks, Matthew
13. I just bought a beautiful old Fender from Howard. He was a great seller, and everything was exactly as described. Thanks Howard.
14. Hello, I'm sure you don't want to do this this early in the sale, but if it doesn't shift and you'd consider splitting, I would be interested in the neck, depending on the price, cheers, Matthew
15. Hello, I wonder if anybody out there knows why Ashdown heads seem to come in two widths. I've just bought a second hand ABM 300. I'm delighted with it, it has just the sound I [currently think I] am looking for. But it seems to be wider than many others. Most appear to look like this: The one I just bought looks like this: Does anyone know why this is? I'm very happy with the amp, just a bit curious, thanks, Matthew
16. I sold Colin my Ampeg Micro rig. He was a delight to deal with from start to finish, it all went really smoothly. I'd recommend him to any basschatter.
17. This is now sold, thanks for your interest, Matthew
18. I use one of these Yamaha 2x10s and find it excellent, so good luck with the sale. Just out of interest - if you're running two of these, does that mean that tiny little amp head is coping with a 2Ohm load? Crikey. M
19. Hello, Drewk_ie: I'm pretty sure my next amp is going to be an Ashdown, so I'll pass on the trade. Thanks, though. Headofire: as the guys pointed out in my absence [thanks clauster and munkonthehill ], it's 2 cabs not 1. No bother, though, easy mistake to make. M
20. A couple of deals fell through on this, so it's still available, M
21. munkonthehill: thanks buddy. cerijones: I'd like to sell them as a one-r, since they all match up so well. If they don't go as that I'll start to think about splitting, but I want to hang on for now to sell them as a lot if possible. MythSte: thanks, I'm sure I'll talk to you later. M
22. For sale is one Ampeg Micro VR 200 watt head and two Ampeg SVT 210AV 2x10 cabinets. This is an insanely light and portable set-up, and was bought new in February by Beedster. I bought it from him and have had it for a few weeks. It's great, but my band is getting some bigger gigs and I think I need something more powerful. If I could afford to keep this for rehearsals and smaller gigs I'd do it in a shot. This amp has a surprising amount of the tone you get from Ampeg's all-valve heads and big fridge cabinets. It's not the whole shebang of course, but it's closer than something this small, light and relatively cheap has any right to be. The portability is amazing. I went to a gig on the bus the other night with the head in one hand, one cab in the other and a bass in a gig bag on my back. I walked ten minutes to the bus, hopped on and walked ten minutes to the venue with no problem at all, rig in hands. Having two cabs is handy too – I keep one at home for practising and the other at my blues band singer's house where we rehearse. I just turn up with the bass on my back and the head in one hand and am ready to go in thirty seconds. It throws out enough volume for a rehearsal with one cab and could do small gigs with that. For slightly bigger gigs you'd need the two cabs. It has a DI out as well if you have PA support. The sound is classic Ampeg. This rig is mid-heavy, which is great for that growling sound, but can be pulled back with the EQ if it's too much for you. Changing the cab configurations from stacked to side-by-side has a big impact on the sound too, and is worth experimenting with. This is not a hi-fi amp, though. If you are looking for something other than an old-school tone, look elsewhere. What it does is relatively limited, but it does it really well. Head is 200W into 4ohms, 150W into 8, speakers are 8ohms, rated at 200W. You can see what Talkbass types think of it here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.p...&highlight= And what Beedster thought of it on buying it here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=75821&hl= This looks brilliant, it sounds great and is light as a feather. I'm looking for £500 plus postage, which is what I got it from Beedster for. It will come packed in original boxes, postage should be about £40. Here are some pics: And because I don't have both cabs in the same place just now, Chris [Beedster] has kindly allowed me to use his picture from his sale thread of them both together: Thanks for looking, Matthew
23. I just bought Chris's Ampeg mini-rig. As in a previous transaction Chris was informative, fair, helpful, communicative and a delight to deal with, everything a chap could want in a seller. And the amp sounds absolutely great, thanks Chris, Matthew
24. This is now sold, pending payment. Thanks for your interest, M
25. Markorbit and JPJ: I'm afraid it's as you see it. There was no mention by the person who sold it to me of any changes or non-original parts, but it's a 30 year old bass so I can't make any guarantees, I'm afraid, except that it looks, plays and sounds great. So if your judgement is that things like the pickguard are non-original then best to assume that's true. I'm afraid my Fender knowledge is not nearly deep enough to tell. If you want any extra pics to help you make a judgement on something, do just ask. I don't have the original case or the covers, I'm afraid. Thanks for the interest, Matthew
