Rig shrinking - bass world surely leading the way?
CamdenRob replied to mrtcat's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have a Mesa Mini Rectifier for my guitar outings... It's great, all valve, 5.5kg, 25 watts and so earth shatteringly loud the master has never been over half way. Lighter weight guitar gear is available it just doesn't seem to be very popular for some reason. My Mesa 1x12s weight almost the same as my lightweight bass cabs and are smaller so even easier to manoeuvre. To me it made sense to go for the lightest smallest rig that could do the gig for my guitar setup... then again I came at it from a background as a bass player so maybe I expect portability from my gear that long time guitarists do not. -
You know how it works, now all you have to do is do it. Lots. The more you do it, the better your reading will get. Do some every day. Half hour or so of reading will do wonders. And you will learn the fretboard backwards whilst you do it.
You're right of course, the key is practice... need to commit it to memory and get faster so I can look ahead a bar or so for any pitfalls.
Nice setup! \m/
I really happy with the whole set up, I can easily manage the guitar and amp head around London on public transport and for gigs the cabs both fit on a trolly which is also managable on the bus .I'm astounded how loud the mini rectifier is... It is 25 watts and I've never got it anywhere near half way on the master, despite an enthusiastic metal drummer.

Determined to have a proper go at it this time after a few half-arsed attempts in the past. I know where the notes are on the stave / fretboard, understand key sigs, time sigs and note / rest values etc. but my sight reading skills are non existent and it's something I really would like to be able to do so I've started my way thorugh this; First couple of chapters down and not finding it too difficult to sight read through the exercises although I expect it gets much harder! Must stick with it and actually learn this time...

I suffer from this... my left hand occasionally seizes up without warning, I end up limping through to the end of the song playing basic single finger stuff. I only get it when jumping around live, never in practice. I guess I'm fretting to hard in the moment, should concentrate on playing lighter but it's so easy to forget when playing live.

That is stunning...

How many basses have you bought off the Basschat marketplace?
CamdenRob replied to Highfox's topic in Bass Guitars
Loads... Both bought and sold. I've only had positive experiences on the BC marketplace -
Just got my Schecter C7 back from The Gallery, when it's been for it's Metal mods.... It's had a set of Bareknuckle Painkillers installed, the volume knob replaced with a on off switch and the tone control removed and replaced with a very metal looking bolt... The signal now goes pickups - pickup selector - output jack. nothing to go wrong when I'm throwing it around... also put some strap locks on it. Portable Metal set up now complete...

Unfortunately I'm a bit far away but I'd be happy to offer some chords and high register melody from a six string I've composed several simple short all bass pieces utalising a looper in the past and quite like the overall sound. Hope you find some poeple

If this is what's considered good I'm more out of touch than I thought... Then again I'm not really his target demographic... I doubt One Direction would expect to appeal to me either.

Bollock dropped advice needed on amp/cab mismatch
CamdenRob replied to karlfer's topic in Amps and Cabs
Decided to go back to the simplicity of the wonderful Tec Amp PUMA. Ordered the 900 watt (4 ohms). Ten minutes later the dawning. My two Berg AE112 cabs are only 300 watt apiece, so obviously 6oo watts in total . Any ideas that don't end in buying more bloody gear? Yours, embarrassed muppet of Wigan.
I asked a similar question of Mike at Purple Chilli when I ordered my cabs (300 watts a piece) as I was running a GB Shuttlemax12.2 at the time (1200Watt) I was told that the 300 watts was for a constant signal and the cabs could handle peaks up to double that without any problem. Those bergs are super sensitive so I doubt you would get anywhere near 600 watts without deafening everyone in the vicinity. *disclaimer* someone with proper knowledge of these things will be along soon I expect, following my advice is never a good idea, especially when expensive gear is involved... -
'Hybrid' is one way of putting it...
CamdenRob replied to Panamonte's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That looks awful... bet its one of those basses that plays and sounds amazing though. maybe for £85 but defo not £850. -
Great Rob! Yes, indeed Paul has already built three "new" Wals for me: the white MKII and the green MKI shown on the Wal gallery page, and the new fretless one you're going to get soon. All of them are flawless and if money wasn't an issue they'd all have stayed with me here ... I was thinking about asking you to have Paul switch the old Gotoh tuners for new Hipshot Ultralight ones while the Shedua is with him for service? Doable? Best wishes from scorching hot Germany Oliver
Yeah it's pretty hot over here as well.... I'll ask Paul about the tuners no worries. I'll drop you a line when he replies

*GONE* I picked this up last week as I was interested to find out just how "unplayable" the Thomann Deco basses were. I was amazed when this arrived, the D they have stamped into the neck near the heel to identify this bass as a deco is bigger than the ding that made it a deco in the first place... Very useable range of tones. The P is thumpy and deep and the J is surprisingly burpy and clear. Additionally the tone control actually does something and rolls the treble off nicely should that be your bag. The output is a little low but not really an issue. The body finish is OK and the neck / headstock has a rather pleasing grain to it. The pickguard however is horrendous... A black or white replacement would look great I reckon. Frets are level and reasonably finished, one of the side markers is placed a bit off centre but apart from that it's a well put together bass. Could do with a setup and the strings are a bit naff but hey it was sold as unplayable... Even at full value this bass would give Squier something to think about. It really is quite good. I have no need for it and bought it as a bit of a folly really. I'm sure someone one out there needs a bass and I'm happy to pass this on. Would make an interesting project for those with the skills as well, I reckon that jazz pickup would sounds great if this was fretless. I do still have the box, but shipping is a pain so collection prefered, from Camden, London. I can be around tomorrow if anyone wants to pick it up. Some pics... look at that pickguard
I am puzzled by one thing that you mentioned, as a general question: I wonder how they manage to keep the doors open if they only roll out 2-3 basses per month, while supporting two employees? I'm guessing that the rent must be quite affordable.
Yes I found that surprising too. The guys clearly are not in this just for the money - and although I imagine they do well enough, it's definitely not champagne cocktails on the yacht time... It looks to take a huge amount of skilled man hours to create these instruments (and I'd imagine any other full custom build) which I guess is where a fair chunk of the price goes. I found the whole thing very reassuring when I visited. Paul is positive about how things are going and happy to see the orders rolling in so Wal is in safe hands for the foreseable future Another interesting point he mentioned was trying to make some stock instruments which would be available without the 24 month wait

Who's the finest luthier in all of...um....luthiery?
CamdenRob replied to Funky Dunky's topic in Bass Guitars
It is not so much the bloke in a shed that is the issue, for me..as long as the kit doesn't look like it was knocked up by any old bloke in the shed. And even some of these two man operations are very capable of excellent work.
oh yes of course... I just find it interesting when you see these guys workshops they are often simple affairs. A few tools and an immense amount of skill seems to be the way it's done. ... could also be said of bass playing I guess. -

Dunno how this thread passed me by... That looks fantastic I'm always pleased to hear that basses I think look amazing have the sound / playability to match. Only problem with that is it makes me want one even more...

CamdenRob replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm taking the 5 string to practice tonight. Had a 20 minute play at home yesterday. I have to say, it's got one hell of a punchy tone to it!
They are good aren't they... the P soloed does what a P should, deep and thumpy. But the real surprise for me was the J pickup, soloed it had a wonderful burp. I reckon it would sound great fretless.
