1. Mrs C has recently bought me a subscription, so I'm very much looking forward to the BC column every month.
2.
Yeah I am sure the "sleeve" has the same system as Vertigo M80 seems to have a strap? So that fits 6's then? Bren
Yes the m80 is fine for Sixers but it is quite big and bulky... My wal weighs 11lb and any weight I can save in a decent Gigbag would be a bonus.
3. Thats worth knowing... I assume the sleeve will have the same issue? I have an M80 but was thinking of going for the sleeve, maybe not now!
4. How bizarre... On the way to work this morning whilst stairing out the window of the bus I thought to myself. " I wonder what Squarepusher is doing these days... he was a sh*t hot bassist..."
5.
Hi, Drew at GBBL has commissioned me to build another one similar to this, should be finished by the end of summer
Has he now... better start saving the pennies... It's a beautiful shape, I know you have done others in this style but the woods used for this one make it very easy on the eye.
6. Thanks guys It's a couple of months away yet, but I'm looking forward to it almost as much as the new MK3.
7. I like it... although definitely not with tort.
8.
I'm not even too bothered about the basses (or potential lack of) to be honest. If Fender don't bring enough basses with them, that's out of our hands but it's just a really great chance to see some fantastic musicians! Hopefully there will be plenty of nice basses on show though :-)
Yeah it looks like a really good show, looking forward to it
9. Presumably there are limited tickets for this event and if BCers snap most of them up early Fender are going to wonder why 95% of their audience are bass players... ... maybe they will open a bass emporium to cater for us.
10.
Surely the strings being used will make a big difference. Won't they?
yes of course strings make a massive difference but It's not just the strings though. I've used the same B string on two different 34" basses and one has been tight and punchy and the other flabby and muffled. ... there be some magic afoot in them there B strings.
11. Could have a BC curry beforehand as it's just off Brick Lane...
12. Looks great. I've booked for the London one.
13. Some B strings can feel flabby and ill defined. I've no idea of the mechanics of it as I've played basses with the same scale length and strings which should in theory fell the same but they do not.... I recon it must have something to do with the pickups too and how the low frequencies are picked up and amplified.
14.
And I've checked out most of them! But unfortunately, most of them are not the simple Thumb or Streamer Stage-1 5-strings that I'm after, but instead other types. Otherwise I would seriously consider one of them.
I've not had a streamer but I had a Thumb NT sixer and a Corvette $$ fiver and they both sounded epic.
15. I've not played the Fender but GK and Ashdown are vastly different beasts... GK is modern, punchy and clean whereas the Ashdown is a much warmer more vintage sound (AKA Orange etc). They are at opposite ends of the spectrum really.
16.
I've had GAS for a Warwick for a long time... Thumb or Streamer.
Warwick GAS is not a bad thing, they are wonderful instruments with a unique tone... I beleive there are some reasonably priced examples in the BC marketplace right now
17. My new Ziricote MK3 sixer is due in six weeks so I decided it might be time to think about moving on my Shedua MK3 sixer... so I replied to a buyers PM who has been interested for a while and put a plan in place to sell it on... ... and then I noticed he had put this up for sale to raise the funds; a 2014 fretless MK1 with gorgeous stained sycamore facings. ... and so a trade was done and following the arrival of my new MK3 and a service of my current one, this beauty will be making it's way to me Can't wait...
18. This from the GBBL website... Fortunately it seems to have sold...
19. I'd get another MI10 if you like the sound... seems like the best and cheapest option to me. I'd prefer a 2x110 set up over a 210, it's just easier to move around a modular set up.
20. I've got the boss RC-1... It's basically a ditto clone that can run on batteries.
21. I have no idea... often wondered this myself.
22.
I can see this going OT but 'if' the body material (generally wood) didn't have any affect, then every instrument fitted with type X, Y or Z pup and preamp would sound the same... unless the fingerboard material had an effect but then everyone knows that is nonsense!
Everyone knows it's all in the fingers.. Every bass regardless of woods, electronics, strings etc sounds identical in a given players hands... It doesnt even matter how you set up the EQ on your amp... it's all in the fingers anyway.
23. It's subjective based on our experience isn't it... I've only had a few Fenders (a US 2010 50th anniversary jazz, an 83 US jazz and an 84 Jap Precision) and they were universally great instruments, solid, pure passive sound and would have lasted me a lifetime if the tone suited me. Conversely I've only owned one Squier (a late 80s precision) and it was truly awful in every imaginable way... and not because of set up, misuse etc. It had no excuses... it was just an epically sh*t instrument.
24.
My band played a bar in Nottingham in October last year. Two people who we have on video dancing to the first song of the night, later assaulted two of us, tried to steal some equipment, damaged my car and one exposed himself and worse. This one is expected to be going down for considerable time when he is sentenced on Fri 5/6. the other hasn't yet been identified. We were only trying to entertain people and did a good job in difficult circumstances. When we arrived the bar manager said sorry we've double booked, we're showing the boxing tonight. Some of my band had travelled considerable distance. They said can we play after the boxing is over. We will never play there again or any other sports bar, that is showing a big event before us. I think this show massive disrespect from the venue and they did not do enough to secure the band's safe departure.
That's terrible... I think the "respect for an art form" thing is a load of guff, but respect for you as a person should be a given. No-one should have to fear for the safety of themselves or their gear.
25. I'm always in two minds about this sort of thing, I think it's a very different situation for working covers bands than it is for original acts. For a working covers band I would expect to be having a sound / style that was in keeping with the ethos of the sort of music the band was trying to replicate. If my sound / gear didn't fit then I'd have no hesitation in changing it to something everyone thought worked best. If I was earning my living from music I'd do what I was told and get on with it. In an originals band I'd look at it a little differently... it depends what you want out of it. If you just want to be in a band and aren't really overly concerned about having much influence over the direction or sound of the project then fine, do as you're told... But personally I think it's important to hold out for what you think is best regardless of what the rest of the band thinks. It's the same with your playing style, your sound is part of the package a band gets by having you as their bass player. I'd rather a band find someone else who's sound fits their style than told me what to play and how to set up my gear... It's not happened to me yet. I've had bands try because everyone wants to be in control of everything, but if you stand firm and stand by what you think is the best sound for the project that gives the other guys a simple choice... If they like you as a player then they can stop interfering and concentrate on their own sh*t or they can get rid of you.
