The thing is it's difficult to escape it... I recently bought a Mesa guitar stack and it has made in USA stamped all over the amp and cabs. Manufactured in California I understand by workers with medical packages and a living wage. Nice and ethical? Well it would be if the branded amp bag and cab covers didn't have "Made in China" on the label... no doubt knocked out for a few pence by kids somewhere.

Anyone had any contact with Peter recently?
I was expecting lots of people to reply that expensive basses were well worth the extra but, as Machines said, you do see a lot of them for sale here on BC.
Yes the "expensive must be better" thing is definitely untrue. I personally play Wal basses as they are the instrument that I feel works best for the tone I am trying to achieve, I cannot get that tone from anything other than a Wal. So as that's what I want I have no choice but to order one for myself. The point here is that I don't feel what I want is available anywhere else. If you're just looking for something "better" then obviously everything from tone to aesthetics is subjective... hence you'll see many "dream basses" up for sale a few months later when the owners tastes have changed. I would say there is no point whatsoever in going custom if you can get what you want off the shelf.
I'm know I'm basically looking for a Jazz tone, maybe a PJ? The Precision I bought on a whim and the Fortress is a little too growly for me even though it plays like butter. My current go to is the Lakland which is very flexible having the J East preamp. FWIW my rig is all Markbass, an F1 head into two NY804 cabs.
Well there is certainly alot of custom builders going for the super jazz vibe so you could maybe take a look at them. IMO though the super jazz market is concentrating on improvemenets in aesthetics and playability over the Fender standard rather than an improvement in tone so much... A lot of markbass users go for a more modern sound, bright and punchy as opposed to soft and warm. Don't know if your typical but an active preamp / pickups would accentuate this.
Thanks for the wisdom all its very welcome ..
Bilbo's post is wisdom... my input is based on self taught theory with many holes I am only recently beginning to plug

I've been contemplating this set up recently... My only worry is stability, it'd be very tall and thin with a heavy amp on top. Don't reckon it would take much to send the entire thing toppling over.

I'm not convinced to be honest... Happy to accept others can hear things I can't though

As ever with this question everyone is different... It would be difficult to replace all of the core tones you currently have with the Lakland, P, Fretless Jazz and the Warwick with a single bass. Personally I have gone down the one bass route (well two including a fretless), but that's because I have tried just about everything out there and I know exactly what I want... unless you know the specific instrument you want I'd maybe keep hold of what you have.
How about a Pedaltrain Volto so you can use any pedals without having to plug into a wall?
I've never seen one of those... What a good idea.

I'm looking for a compressor for basic home recording duties, but I want something that runs on batteries so I can just grab it plug in and go. I liked the look of both the Diamond and the Empress but neither run on batteries. I've been through the obligitory compressor resource http://www.ovnilab.com/ but it's not clear what runs on batteries and what doesn't. Any recomendations?
Cheers Rob i thought that would be the case , what prompted my question was a u tube lesson by Bill Harrison where he's walking over Em7 A7 Dm Bm7 ,and if i use the aeolian or dorian it all seems to work [more or less] ,and if i use the corresponding modes trying to avoid the obvious root placement it doesnt seem so different [ it may do on a listen back though ] ...
I'm no expert and if it sounds good i'd just go for it I may be wrong but those chords don't look in D minor to me though? D being the relative of F Major so you'd get F,Gm,Am,Bb,C,Dm,E/dim...

I think this is a BCers bass, looks a bit different to the last time I saw it, pretty sure it was a lighter colour for the body.
I have a question for you Jazz cats, when walking through a chord pattern in lets say D minor is there anything wrong with using the minor/dorian scale, and just walking through the changes or should one always be aware of every chord and the appropriate arpeggio ?
I'd go with the appropriate modes... if your going with the 2,5,1,4 as a regular diatonic chord progression in D minor (F major) then you'll be fine with the dorian over the 2 but the 1,4 and 5 will be major chords so a dorian or aeolian would clash pretty badly if your moving the tonal center to the root with each chord change. I guess a walking bass in G dorian could work throughout all the chords in D minor but I'd go for the corresponding mode over each chord.

In addition to everything truckstop says (as he's spot on) maybe try experimenting with using a pick? It can sometimes give those very low notes a bit more attack, allowing them to cut through a bit more.

Depends how the songs have been written... I'm setting up a metalcore band at the moment and all the songs are diatonically correct, with only notes from a chosen key in each so the bass line can be anything from the corresponding modes to the chords used. If the riffs are all written chromatically with random unrelated notes then playing anything other than roots is going to be difficult.

Meh... I play for free all the time. Music is my passion not my job.

A year past the original completion date for my build I lost patience with the excuses. It became increasingly clear that I wasn't going to get a bass that was anything like the one I'd originally ordered. In the end I took legal action against him and got all my money back plus costs. Very pleased to be rid of the whole sorry affair.

Been asked before I know... but I'm always considering as smaller rig as I can get away with. Is a decent 2x10 enough for regular gigging? I very rarely play venues with no PA support but sometimes have to overcome an enthusiastic drummer... I love my 112s they sound awesome but I'm forever on a quest to carry as little gear as possible...
