Are some sound engineers 'enemies of bass' ?
CamdenRob replied to Wayne Firefly's topic in General Discussion
In my general experience of life an 8 out of 10 ratio of reasonable guy to a***hole is pretty exceptional... -
I love sappy ziricote, a Fretboard of the same is going on my Alpha build This is going to look great! Must be killing you, Rob!
To be honest, I've been waiting for so long I'd kind of got used to it... I've only started to feel impatient now it's just a couple of months away!

Another happy MB200 user here. I pair mine with a EA wizzy 10 and have taken it on the bus to many a gig

So this thread has inadvertedly answered the ultimate BC question... tis a momentous day.
Looking good Rob!
I can't wait... the build time has been painful and there are still a couple of months to go!
That is mighty kind of you. I may just well take up your offer if I have some spare time to go out to Camden
No worries... I've got two going spare actually, one larger and one smaller. I'll pop the dimensions up in the recycling section tomorrow, if they are any use let me know.

Until you pick up something decent, I've one of these stagg jobbies cluttering up the spare room if you wanted it? Mrs C is threatening to throw it in the bin so it might as well get some use.

I think Warwicks are right up there for metal, the sound just seems to work so well under a mass of distorted guitars, underpinning yet still being heard due to that unique top end zing you get. Personally I'd go for a thumb but the corvette would do just fine and they tend to be a bit cheaper.

Headstock veneer gone on for my incoming Ziricote Mk3. Not long to go now
We used Kafri Studios yesterday for the 1st time and all went well, there's just 3 of us and the small room we had was fine but would be a bit of a squash if there were more of us, they do have bigger rooms so we may try one of those next time. It did smell a little bit damp but nothing terrible and usual for places like this in railway arches. The Ashdown 4x10 combo worked and sounded fine as did the PA. The guy running the place was friendly, helpful and professional. Location wise it was easy for me to get to by train using the Overground service to Hoxton then a short 5 minute walk to the studio's location, weirdly there don't seem to be any pubs nearby despite the fact the next arch along is a brewery! The other two band members drove and parked outside the entrance, there is also plenty of street parking but there was a wedding at the nearby Mosque so it was busy.
Sounds like another one to add to the list of good'uns then

Not a big fan of the single cut either... That would put me off. I guess the biggest problem with cosmetic issues is that you are unlikely to even pick up the bass to try it. it might be the best bass you've ever played but if you never pick it up because it's pig ugly then you're not going to be buying it.

I recently bough a couple of 1x12 mesa guitar cabs and they came with decent padded covers included... First time I've ever seen a manufacturer include covers, was a nice bonus.
people will come just to see the mad speaker
This is true...I would go and see your band just to see it in action. I think it's clear from the advice of Bill, Alex and others who really know their sh*t with cab design (you can disagree as much as you like with them but that won't change the fact that they are right) that this cab isn't going to be functioning at anything like optimum perfomance levels. But... as proposterous as it is it will be a talking point and I think you should just go ahead and make it anyway its all very spinal tap...
i'm a big fan of hughes & kettner stuff for guitar... if you want "mesa" tones in a box, I personally recommend the original tubeman pedal. they crop up second hand at around 80 quid and sound killer (i guess reissues are OK but ideally mk1 is the one to go for). with this you can plug into an amp head or even straight into a mixing desk (i just finished tracking a demo and the tube man actually stands up as a second rhythm track to an expensive half-stack thru a sm57 ;-)). otherwise, if you do want a portable head solution, try tubemeister18 - plenty loud for gigs. PM me if you want more info. cheers, Roman
I looked at the H&K stuff. A guitarist in a recent rock band I played with had one of the new ones (not sure which model - clear perspex all valve head with switchable wattage) and it sounded great. I went for a Mesa Mini Rectifier stack in the end and I'm very pleased with it... so much so that I've bought a Sansamp US Steel, which is an emulator of the rectifier to take to rehearsals when I can't be bothered to lug my amp there... The Mesa rectifier stuff is a bit of a one trick pony but I bought it specifically for that trick and for my money none do it better.... very pleased

A couple of mentions already but string spacing has to be the worst thing for me... It's the only thing that would actually make a bass difficult for me to play. All my other dislikes, gold hardware etc. can be easily rectified by just swapping out but string spacing is a bit of a show stopper if it's too tight. Doesn't seem to be as much of an issue for me at the nut but much closer than 18mm at the bridge and I struggle.

Gold hardware...

£100... That really is cheap. What on earth is it made out of bearing in mind thomann must be making a profit etc. I had a behringer amp ages ago and it served me proud.
Guess what... The gig was one of the best of my life. Ever. More to come tomorrow.
Great stuff! Really pleased for you...

NBD - Sea Foam Green P(Recession) Bass Update
CamdenRob replied to Mykesbass's topic in Bass Guitars
I think that looks great... -
Not quite the same as DB I know but I cart an electric bass and a cab arond with me on the public transport system all the time. When the busses / tubes are empty it's a breeze and utterly impossible at busy times, wouldn't even entertain the idea between 6-10AM or 4-7PM... it would be a nightmare.
Trying http://www.kafristudios.co.uk/ in North East London on Sunday for the 1st time, I'll report back next week with my thoughts.
Haven't been there... looks like a handy location.
This was kinda my thinking in a way (although I am currently trying to decide which of two Precisions to move on and one factor is board material, specifically do I really need to have at least one bass with a rosewood board in my arsenal). So, we have an anechoic chamber at work. We also have some expertise in acoustics and sound measurement. My research area is the placebo effect, and one of the reasons I am interested is that a lot of my work centres on the idea that what we expect is what we get (a paper myself and my research team published a while back was titled 'Beliefs versus reality or beliefs as reality' which sums it up quite well I think). I'm therefore not so much interested in what is the acoustic reality, but how a player's expectation of tone leads to that player's perception of tone (although of course we have to measure the actual acoustic reality as a control). So, I may set this up as a final year student project, we could use an anechoic chamber to measuring actual frequency response of instruments against perceived frequency response, and specifically interpret the latter as a function of the musicians' expected frequency response (not just tone of board materials, we could look at vintage/expensive versus modern/cheap etc). Now, where would I find a few bassists
I would be very interested in the outcome of that research.
