What is your standard gigging set up and sound?
CamdenRob replied to FuNkShUi's topic in General Discussion
Mines pretty simple... Wal into Glockenklang Blue Soul with EQ set flat into 2x 112 Purple Chili cabs with the tweeters set on 5. On the bass I usually have the bridge filter wide open and neck filter rolled off to between 2-5 and vary the tone by playing over bridge or neck pickups depending on whether i'm looking to underpin the mix or cut through it. I set the master volume to 7 (out of 10) and that gives me the flexibility to balance my level depending how enthusiastically everyone else is playing. Gigs with PA support I run straight out of my bass into the PA. -
'post pre modern gothic christian hardcore jazz metal band'
I'm in... can you forward on the details? I guess it depends where you live. I periodically put up ads on gumtree when a project comes to an end and I have the time for something new. But I'm in London... where there isn't exactlly a shortage of people looking to form new bands. I find it's important to state what you are looking for, as in I always put "looking for new projects only, no covers or established bands" I always put this otherwise you end up inundated with requests from bands who want you to play exactly what their last bass player played... even if it's sh*t....
Thanks Dad... hopefully have this new thing up and running by next month so I can get back to the more serious business of the BC compo comp.

I've only experience of two P basses... My first ever bass which was a squier abomination. Frankly the less said about it the better. ...and more recently I breifly had a delightful 85 Jap P in sunburst with a maple neck. Only sold it as I found myself using fretless for the projects I intended it for, sounded lovely with flats and the tone rolled off.
The South East one is spitting distance from London on the train usually.
Yes but it's nowhere near a station...
The main problem for central London is the availability of a school or similar at an affordable price, I think. As well as, possibly, parking spaces/fees.
Yes I think that's the conclusion we arrived at last time it was disscussed... I shall have to make my way out to one of the regional ones instead

Mixed experiences last week with a couple more London studios. Panic Studios in Acton was pretty ropey... ubiquitous ashdown piece of crap for the bass amp and crusty old guitar amps from various long dead manufacturers., also a less than fresh mouldy aroma throughout... Other one was K Town studios in Kentish Town. Not bad really, Hartke Bass rigs, reasonable kit and PA and didn't smell of stale piss.. although it's apperantely owned by one of the guys that used to run enterprise so that may change.
Thanks everyone for your input. I bought A boss RC1 the other day and it's perfect. Some very useful features include: the use of an external pedal for extra functions. setting the loop to end after one playthrough (EXACTLY what I need) Changing the order of playback functions. All in all it's a very tidy unit and the very quiet mechanical pedal is a bonus for anyone in an acoustic environemnt. The new piece i've written will definitley be in my live set for the next few gigs, albeit in a slightly shorter version.
Glad to hear your pleased with it the boss unit ticked all the boxes for me as well.
The Dorset/Somerset bass bashes are always in a pub, gear in the skittle alley/ back room, basschattery over a pint in the bar, oo arr! Haven't made it to them all but no finer way to spend an afternoon IMO!
That sounds perfect... unfortunately I'm miles away from dorset/somerset

The main appeal for me is it seems a good opportunity to try out some gear without the pressure to buy you would have in a shop.
Only been to one but it involved a pub and curry...
The ones I've looked into going to sadly seem to have overlooked these important elements in favour of tea and cakes... Hoping to get along to the next hearts bash. Would love one somewhere accessable in Central London, but I'm too lazy to organise it...

Not going to get anything done this month I'm afraid gents, need to concentrate writing energies elsewhere with my limited time for music stuff, trying to get a new project off the ground. Looking forward to listening to all the entries looks like there might be a few newcommers as well

help needed choosing a new lightweight bass rig
CamdenRob replied to matttimms's topic in Amps and Cabs
Although can I even connect the amp head to both cabs? ? The amp only had one speakon output and I think the cabs arnt speakon. Can this still work?
Depends on the impedance of the cabs and how you connect them up, there is a sticky all about it on here somewhere. I'm unfamiliar with tc gear but I'd imagine it would run down to 4 ohms to allow you to connect two 8ohm cabs. I would say it's a good idea to match the cabs though, two 110s or two 112s. -
Interesting, My biggest influence is Code Orange Kid if you can dig it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpVa-x7YndY
That's cool. My stuff is leaning towards the heavier side of this with less of the punk style stuff but not far away really... Cool vocals.
What are your influences for this project? I could be interested doing bass and vocals. ^^
I'm so far out touch with the metal scene these days I've nothing modern to compare it to unfortunately... Its close in sound and feel to Haymaker era Throwdown and Carpe Diem era Will Haven, but with a original focus. Lots of broken grooves, with big chordy choruses. Essentially its just relentlessly heavy hardcore. Its going to take me a couple of weeks to put some demos together but I'll drop you a link when its up and running, see what you think.

CamdenRob replied to matttimms's topic in Amps and Cabs
Well going by the description above I think I`d be looking at the GK gear.
Yes definitely. There is basically a spectrum of amp / cab types with old school on one end and modern on the other. There are amps that can do both but I find that amps have a core character and it's best to go for one that was made with your intended tone as the standard. Tone is subjective obviously but using some generally accepted adjectives "old school" amps are warm and soft sounding with an emphasis in the low MIDs (think of most pre 80s recorded bass) "modern" or "HiFi" amps have a deep bright scooped character, with punch and zing (think RCHP, jamiroquai etc). Of the amps you've mentioned I'd order them from old school to HiFi; Ashdown - Fender - TC - GK Its all down to personal preference and one man's "best" amp is another's "worthless pile of crap". -

Depends on the sort of tone you are after? There is a world of difference between Ashdown and GK... Opposite ends of the spectrum really. -
You'll be fine... my Wal si 34". May need to recut the nut / get a new one though to take the wider strings.
Unless you think they would love the honour of working with you...??
No prestige in working with me i'm afraid, I certainly don't hold any weight in that department. It's a project for a bit of fun to be honest, just to put some songs together and get out there gigging. Hardcore works differently to almost everything else in that there isn't a huge amount of melody or differentiation between instruments, you are all basically following the same groove, thats kind of the ethos of what its all about. When I played this sort of music in the past (many moons ago) the only way it worked was if someone drove the initial ideas then everyone else built around it. People tend to play this sort of music to jump around to live, it's not really something you get into for creative development of your playing...
Do both?
Good shout that, a full demo as an example and then just the guitar parts for people to use as a guide.
You want people who can contribute creatively, surely?
Oh yes definitely, thats why I was a bit worried about putting demos up with all the parts written. I need to find the right people with similar ideas of what the music should be about though, I'm not going to start bringing in elements that are contradictory to the sort of music I want to play in this band. If it gets diluted to much from the initial focus because everyone wants different things that kind of defeats the point of setting the band up in the first place.
Darkglass B7K is used by a lot of metal bands
Yes I've seen that. The Empress Heavy looks good as well.

Morning all, A little advice if you’d be so kind. I’m in two minds as to how to go about this and wouldn’t mind some opinions. I’m putting together a side project just for fun in which I will be playing guitar… I know I know, but it’s hardcore metal and I’d rather play guitar for this kind of stuff. I also want to write the main bulk of the material and this is much easier to control as a guitarist in this particular type of music (also, this is potentially an early mid-life crisis but that’s another matter altogether) So I’ve written four or five tunes and I’m at the point where I need to seek out like minded brethren to contribute drums, bass and of course vocals. I’m going to record a couple of tunes and put them up on soundcloud for any potential victims to learn for auditions. The songs I’m going to put up on soundcloud are the basis of the actual tunes I want the band to play (with a few tweaks once everyone has brought their own bits to the table) they aren’t just stylistic demonstrations. So my quandary is, do I write and record bass parts and tap out some basic drums to give an idea of the sort of feel I'm looking for, or would it be best if I just put up the guitar parts over a click so people can come up with their own ideas? I don’t want to make it look like I’m dictating what people should play, but similarly I don’t want to scare people off who are uncomfortable with composing as I’d happily help out with the basslines. Any opinions?
