1.
Of course, brands like Wal and Warwick placed high...
That's because everyone knows brands beginning with W are the best... Wal, Warwick, Wagamama etc...
2. Not for me this year... not enough trade stands. I only go to look at gear, couldn't give a toss who's playing...
3.
Well considering you said "THE Ric tone - which I personally can't stand", I thought it seemed pretty specific.
I say lots of things... It's usually best to ignore me....
4.
Would that be the Squire tone, the Macca tone or the many points in between? ;-)
To be entirly honest I couldnt give a monkeys what they made theirs basses sound like, its inconsequential... I like how mine sounds when I'm playing it Also rics aren't terrible basses... they just sound terrible when I play them.. totally the opposite of the sound I want from a bass.
5. If I have the money I just buy what I like... There is no way I would let Mrs C dictate what I was allowed to spend my own money on.
6. Well Denmark street are catering to beginners really and people maybe not as aware of the different instruments available beyond the ubiquitous Fender models. Bass Direct & The Gallery for example are catering for a very different buyer than Wunjos are. It's not possible for a shop to stock everything and they have to go with what is going to make them the most money...
7. I emailled them before I bought my Glockenklang amp asking for a price match... they responded a week after I'd bought it from somewhere else...
8. It's more intervals that you hear rather than actual notes I think... a note is just a note, what comes before and after it gives it the character.
9. I haven't read through this thread but I'm assuming the previous 41 posts is everyone saying their current rig is the best they have ever heard?
10. GAS free at the moment... worrying times
11. Good stuff... another mystery solved... Doesn't someone here have a Sei with Wal pickups and preamp?
12. I spent a long time (and alot of money) trying to get something that sounded close to a Wal I had heard years and years ago... I went through just about everything available, some of which were quality instruments in their own right. In the end I ordered a Wal as I still wasn't getting the sounded I wanted. Managed to snap one up second hand in the meantime to tide me over till mine arrives. I've got rid of all my other basses... which pretty much shows how well the Wal sound works for me.
13. I love these old Shergolds... recon there was some inspiration for the Wal Mk1 from these.
14. Had to change my vote as I'm currently down to just the one...
15. There is an excellent blog on wal history here http://walbasshistory.blogspot.co.uk/p/blog-page_17.html
16.
I know this is a very old thread, but I actualy own the Manson bass with wal pickups. I'll get some photos up later. If anyone has any info on this bass I would be very greatful as Manson didn't keep any records for it.
Please do, I'd be very interested to see those.
17.
I've gone off marmite
I've always been indifferent to marmite... I can take it or leave it.
18. Steve bought my Jap P bass and the deal couldn't have gone smoother. Always a pleasure to start a new feedback thread on a positive BC has another trustworthy trader.
19. I have grown to appreciate Fenders... I think a new USA J or P is a good solid purchase for around a £1000 that would be more than enough for most of us for a lifetime of gigging and recording. I do feel that other builders have expanded Fenders original concept and built upon it, but whether these changes make the instrument better are just a matter of opinion. Personally I choose to play a different bass as it suits what I am trying to achieve with my tone, but Fenders are still pretty much the benchmark starting point for a quality instrument.
20. We played a small beer festival last year and I went on stage plugged in and... nothing... turned the amp up again, checked everything was plugged in, di etc... still nothing. looked at the engineer who was scratching his head and twiddling with things trying to find out what was wrong. Silence from everyone else in the band and the crowd waiting for me to sort it out. A few more minutes faffing around then the engineer came on stage, checked everything, swapped out the DI etc... after another minute or so of head scratching I realised the volume on by bass was set to 0...
21. Looks like a bass to me.
22.
First World problems, eh?
It's nothing compared to my more serious problems... for example last night I couldn't decide which brie to buy in Waitrose.
23.
That's what I thought when I opened a games shop. I don't own a games shop any more.
Yes I did neglect to mention that not a single one of the clueless (about gear) majority I have encountered has ever been in a financial position to buy a new instrument from a shop anyway... probably why they havn't bothered finding out anything about gear...
24. Here on BC we are a relatively well informed bunch but I don't think we are really a reflection of the average gigging musician.. Your regular BC contributor is well aware of most brands and types of instrument, amp etc. but we are bass enthusiasts (enough so to contribute to a forum on the finer points of bass related stuff) where as most people I've played in bands with haven't got the first clue about gear... The singer / guitarist in one of my current projects has been on the scene for years and played hundreds of gigs with various line ups and he was totally unaware that fender manufacture in various countries (MIM, MIJ etc) and had no idea that squire was fenders budget brand... he is fairly typical of people I've met in bands over the years. I think music shops will survive as the majority of people just don't know any better.
