Any Ashdown amp / cab I've ever played through... They are everywhere in London, pretty much a staple in every rehearsal studio and I can't for the life of me imagine why... I have never managed to get a usable tone out of any of them, just a muffled rumble that changes very little despite the eq settings. Orange stuff is almost as bad.
That's the problem with a thread like this though isn't it, I think it looks great Damn subjectivity! Si
Your right of course... BC would be very predictable if most people played a P bass and criticised everything else... I do think the fodera in question is an interesting idea but for my tastes this is the way to do a hybrid;
The reason these basses cost $30.000+ is because of the amount of highly skilled work it takes to make such a unique instrument. These basses are not a novelty, but rather they are the ultimate in quality and craftsmanship. If small differences aren't important to you it may seem like a frivolous waste of money to buy such an expensive instrument, but if you are obsessed with seeking perfection the Fodera could be the way to go for some people. I think this particular bass is extraordinarily beautiful, even though I would have it specced slightly differently for my own taste. I love the way the overall design is reminiscent of an accoustic guitar, and I am sure that would be reflected in the amplified tone of this bass. The very plain-looking Spruce top was chosen by Fodera for it's accoustic properties rather than it's decoration value. Bear in mind that if you want a top quality piano, violin or double bass, $30,000 wont get you very much, so in that context this is a bit of a bargain. Some things in life are expensive and hand-crafted bespoke musical instruments are likely to be among them.
I don't think anyone is doubting the attention to detail... If I had $30K to spend on a bass I wouldnt think twice about buying a Fodera if it met my criteria... The subject of this thread is the bass pictured in post #1 and regardless of who made it or how well it is made I wouldn't pay $30 for it because it looks awful... truely awful

I have never owned a dingwall, only tried a few in shops, but I kinda get the impression that the fanned fret thing is the main focus and the actual sound the instrument makes is maybe a little sterile... I would say it's going to be a very different beast if you're used to a L2500 which has very powerful electronics and a huge range of tonal variations with the onboard controls. Then again you may prefer the simplicity of a transparent tone from the bass itself and can always add a little flavour with your preamp / EQ of choice... definitely try a few out if you can. Personally I prefer the L2500. I think the G&L tributes represent excellent value for money.

Sounds bizarre... Guess it's all good your end if you get the cash... maybe get one of those tester pens or something, make sure it's not dodgy notes. -
That 6 pictured above isn't Rob's. his has chrome hardware, the one pictured has gold and a bass clef inlay.
ah yes so it does... Maybe this was another prototype?
There is an old fretless Wal Pro 2E for trade - only for trade against a good five string bass - here in Sweden. Here is the link: http://pratabas.se/v...php?f=8&t=75233 Translated by Mayhem Translate gives: Well, I love this bass but still I need a fretless with at least five strings and this has only four ... A piece of British engineering from '79, absolutely top class and with a sound you will not find elsewhere. Newly renovated by Wal themselves (incl. reshaping the fretboard, new fingerboard markers, renovation of electronics, new chrome on the neck plate etc etc). I let the cracked laquer and dents be (see picture), then they do not bother me. Unfortunately, the original case is long gone when it fell into so many pieces that it could not be saved. Not for sale but only swapping for fretless 5- or 6-string. I imagine something like the F-bass, woody and mwwaah, preferably lined fingerboard and bolt-on but it is not a requirement. Trade value around £1500-1600. Can arrange more images.
Love the look of that...
Rob i found this pic in my archived Wal folder and it was a bass listed at theBassGallery one point in time. It was listed as a 94 Mk III with Ash facing...unfortunately no serial number to identify where this goes as far as the 6er timeline, but thought it would be some nice 6er eye candy!!! Anyone here might know the story about this one???
I believe this is the one that belongs to Rob Burns... the first and a prototype given to him by Pete, hence the solid ash body. This must be the first sixer built according to the available info. I understand he has recently had it defretted. Although it does look like it has the initials A.L. on the headstock which is throwing me a bit...
My current favorite sound: Bridge LPF - 7-10 (pulled up) Neck LPF - 5-6 (not pulled up) Balance - 2 notches towards bridge Volume - 6 (pulled up) Best Bass for Metal
I've changed mine slightly now to this Bridge LFP - 10 (not pulled up) Neck LPF - 2 (pulled up) Balance - 1 notch towards bridge Volume - 10 (not pulled up) I also find myself playing at different points along the string for different tunes during the set... direct over neck PU is a lovely deep and smooth glassy tone and playing right over the bridge PU brings in a real cutting quack...
Not me I'm afraid. I'd never actually heard of them until I joined here and everyone was talking about someone called Geddy, but then I've never heard of half the names talked about here. I've listened to the 'Permanent Waves' album since and it's good, but not really 'my thing'. One thing that does shine through though is that they're thoroughly enjoying themselves and not just 'doing it' because that's 'what they do'.
This is pretty much how I feel... never heard of Geddy till I signed up here and everyone was talking about him.

The focus seems to have shifted from a show about bass gear to becoming a show about bass players with the emphasis on clinics etc. I'd much prefer to see the show focusing on attracting as many manufacturers as possible.

Black hardware and I'd be very interested... Looks great.
Try hunting them down when the address turns out to be non-existent and the phone number is for a Sunday football league. Well and truly kippered was I. And I used normal PAINPal, not PAINPal gift
You must have been fuming... I would have been too... bastards...

The problem seems to be that adequate protection is available but everyone is to tight to pay for it... I always just send a normal paypal and pay the fees. Yes they are expensive but I'm paying for the protection paypal offers. As a seller I accept paypal gift for low value items or ask for the extra to cover any fees, if it was a large transaction I'd just cover the fees myself. I have in the past sent bank transfers, but only to people with extensive feedback threads and a history of selling similar value items. Unfortunately there is always going to be risk... The only way around it would be some kind of third party system as someone mentioned above, where the item and money are collected by a third party before sending out. However this would cost money and no-one seems keen on paying for anything,,, Also I'm guessing there would be potential insurance issues if the bass arrived damaged the seller could claim that it was fine when they sent it out. alot of dishonest bastards out there... What happened to karlfer above is infruiating, I would not be able to let that lie.. I'd be giving up work and hunting them down!

straights for me... Wal basses have a recessed jack socket so I can't use angled anyway, I do prefer the look of them on fender style basses though.

Looks fantastic... Can't wait for my Peterbuilt... due very soon
I am very interested in going for a 6er. On of my bands is now down to one guitarists (thank the music gods) and i'm seeing this as an opportunity to raise the profile of the bass in songs to fill the 'void'. I'm thinking the higher strings will allow me to mimic the guitar etc. more. Anyone else gone 6 for a similar reason? Also where do I start if I had say £500 notes?
To be honest if your looking to fill the void left by a guitar I'd just fill it by playing guitar... a six string bass is still a bass for fulfilling the role of a bass instrument... nothing like a guitar.. completely different place in the timbre of a band. If your playing higher register chords etc in a band envoronment then who will be holding down the low end?
