1. My Red ferrari goes faster than my Blue focus... must be the colours
 2.
Yup. And much bigger companies don't have to worry about import charges. The majority of popular exotic woods would need to be imported into the UK or the US and bigger companies can produce more instruments and soak up the costs involved with importing woods than an independant luthier. Its not as clear cut as 'luthier is better'... theres only one person who can tell you which route is better for you!
Yes that too... I'm sure there are a host of additional costs a small producer would incur compared to a massive multinational instrument manufacturer.
 3.
A £3k bass direct from the luthier should be one hell of a bass, as you aren't having to pay retail costs... The luthier should make a profit but he doesn't have to factor in 30% or so to a shop/distributor.
Similarly though a small luthier making a limited number of instruments a year would not have the buying power or the means to mass produce parts in cost effictive way like the large maunfacturers... If everything is being made by hand the whole process is more labour intensive and therefore more expensive.... Of course whether you think the end product is worth that additional cost is subjective.
 4.
As an apprentice i was sent to the stores for a long weight..... I send apprentices to the stores to get sparks for the grinder and the storeman asks them what colour? Just saying

Long weight, glass hammer, tartan paint, left handed screwdriver etc etc
Presumably noone actually falls for these time honoured wind ups? I mean first time around would almost be forgivable, if you were victim of the guy who actually first thought of it, but not now surely... after they've been kicking around for decades?
 5.
It's an easy mistake to make... after all, he IS called 'Bananaman'.
indeed it is misleading... his catchphrase "ever alert for the call to action" compounds the confusion...
 6.
I see. I thought perhaps you meant his penis.
Ordinarily you would be correct... but Bananaman is a mutifaceted and complex man with much more to offer.
 7.
Which bit?
it's difficult to choose the best bit out of so many epic moments...
 8.
Bananaman lives at 29 Acacia Road, as any fule kno.
ah yes thats it... my mistake... I do enjoy a bit of Bananaman.
 9.
We mostly do originals, but the covers that we stick in are: The Trooper, Hallowed be Thy Name, 22 Accacia Avenue - Iron Maiden Green Manalishi, Breaking the Law, Helion/Electric Eye - Judas Priest ROCK!!!!
Isn't 22 Acacia Avenue where Bananaman lives? I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure thats how the theme tune starts...
 10. If I was driving to the gig I'd definitely take a spare, but I travel to the vast majority of my gigs on public transport so a backup is out of the question really as I already have a cab to carry, as well as my bass, cables etc. Always take spare strings though and have them closeby on stage.
 11.
... I find the Orange too dark.
Must admit I've never been a fan of the orange sound... along with Ashdown they just don't sound clean enough for my taste. I much prefer a cleaner amp that I can dirty up a bit with a pre if needs be. It's always better to have choice in my book and the orange heads just sound a bit one dimensional to me. Not a criticism of build quality or value, i'm sure they are on a par with any other popular brand there, but I really don't get on with the sound....
 12. Talking of Wals, a guy on Talkbass has a Shedua sixer similar to mine and he reckons his was the third one Pete built with a serial of W14995. Mine is W17195, so eight months older... Could mine be the first? anyone seen an older one? *edit* ... maybe not... Just found an old BC thread where Rob Burns was selling a prototype from 1994.
 13. Wow I'd missed this... what a collection
 14.
I don't know where all this Rickenbacker hatred is from. Plug then into a barefaced and they sound great.
Clankety Honk... Clankety Honk...
 15.
Why stop the options at six strings?
Yes thats a fair point... If Wal did a seven or an eight I'd be interested in giving one a go... although I presume there is a point where a bass is no longer playabe in the tratidional manner due to the width of the neck and it essentially becomes a tapping instrument?
 16.
Got a link to your solo loopy stuff?
I took most of it down with the intention of rerecording everything, wiped all the stuff off my soundcloud. I've just picked up a Boss ME-50B I was intending to use for putting a new batch up, hopefully I'll get some time over xmas. I did a lot of this sort of stuff when I first got back into bass after a long lay off but i've been cocentrating on band stuff for the last year or so and it's kinda slipped away...there are still a couple of old videos up on youtube. 17. I really think those yamahas trbxs look the business... I love the ergo bodies and those pickups looks great too.
 18.
That would be the ethos behind the music according to the producers of the programme? I like thousands of others here in the UK at the time who weren't black, didn't live in the Bronx, Watts or 12th Street Detroit but still appreciated the music so much so that the UK record companies pressed thousands of funk LPs in the golden period of funk from the late 60s to early 80s. The programme did give the impression that you had to be a black American at the time to appreciate or indeed know anything about it. That's presumably because their research was based that side of the pond and the impact of funk only in the US which seems strange as the programme was aimed at a British audience many of who would have been well aware of the impact of funk in 70s Britain..
Thats quite interesting... they properly made it look like it was something you could only enjoy as a black american, talking about 30'000 people at a james brown gig and not a single white person. I liked the music though, not something I've really looked into before. I enjoyed the little insight when they were talking about getting down on the one with the first beat of the bar as a solid hit then a syncopated rhythm to follow, comparing that to the straight 4/4 of the disco that came after and how that, to their minds lacked groove... although it also had very prominent bass! To be honest I've always struggled with getting into the lyrical/cultural side of music... thats why I've never written vocal parts. I have nothing to say I'm not oppressed or downtrodden... no-one is stopping me from doing anything and i'm not really experiencing any great hardship... Who wants to listen to songs about working a steady job and paying the mortgage
 19. it was refreshing to see how prominent the bass was though... right at the front of the mix.
 20.
...but have you any idea about it now?
Not really no... Sounded like some good music though... to be honest I'm not sure I could identify with the whole ethos behind the music, not being a black american in the 70's myself... but it sounded good
 21.
Great show for anyone who doesn't know their Funk from their Elbow...
True... I haven't got the slightest idea about funk and I loved it
 22.
Although I enjoyed playing 6 strings I personally found the high C to be redundant all too often with the styles of music that I play live.
I've also found this... I play sixers as I like to use one bass for everything and I do a fair bit of solo looper stuff where I need the high C, as I'm often playing higher register stuff that would be covered by other instruments in a band setting. Like you for the stuff I play live in bands, where I am only responsible for the bass parts, I could easily get away with a fiver. Although I have no issues with muting etc of six string necks so I'm happy carrying a redundant string for live work.
 23. Yes both the pic and the video show a custom MK1. The Pro 1 is passive single pickup version.
 24. I quite like the idea of having specific threads to discuss specific products... can't be doing with the club thing though...
 25. I think second hand prices are pretty reasonable to be honest... some great bargains to be had in the BC marketplace
