To 5 string or not to 5 string? That is the question.
Cool Great bass too, I play an SR505 most tuesdays for a few hours, its a cracking bass
Is this some sort of secret to bass enlightenment? should I get one for tuesdays as well? -
It’s a popular misconception that learning theory is only any good if you want to read music… sight reading is a completely different skill and you arguably could become reasonably proficient at sight reading without knowing anything about theory. It’s how the notes fit together to enable you to write music in a given key that’s important. For example in C you have the notes C(I) D(II) E(III) F(IV) G(V) A(VI) B(VII) C(VIII) I’ve used numerals in brackets as the theory is relevant to any key not just C and the intervals between the scale degrees are the same. A basic chord (triad) would take the I,III and V degree of the scale, so in C that would be C,D & E this is a major triad and gives you a major chord. If you take the next degree of the scale (D) and play the notes of the C major scale (as we are in the Key of C) between D and D you have the dorian mode… if you take I,III and V from D dorian you get the notes D,F and A which is a minor triad giving you a D minor chord. If you then continue up the sequence running E to E using the notes of C major (EFGABCDE) (I,III and V = E,G,B minor triad again) you get the next mode which is Phrygian. Then; F-F = Lydian (Major Triad) G-G = Myxolidian (Major Triad) A-A = Aolian Mode (Minor Triad) And B-B = Locrian mode (half diminished triad (bIII and bV) So by using only the notes of C major you have the chords Cmaj, Dmin, Emin, Fmaj, Gmaj, Amin and Bhalfdim that are related and will all sound good together in the context of a song. You can use notes from the modes over these chords to create basslines in harmony with the chords… Much more interesting than just playing root notes or the same as the guitar an octave lower…
Yeah it doesn't fit in that other stand properly. Thankfully, I actually got a new stand, a double one to take the 4 and 6 stringers - it fits alright in this stand - check it out...
Thanks for that Is that a hercules one as well? I think I've got one of those in the depths of the cupboard somewhere, I'll dig it out and see if it fits.

To 5 string or not to 5 string? That is the question.
CamdenRob replied to kulabula's topic in General Discussion
I play Sixers, but to be honest I could get away with Five for 90% of the stuff I do, Its only for Looper / Chordal stuff that I use the high C. I find Six string necks comfortable enough so its just as easy to use one in my live bands over a Fiver. I find the low D indespensible as so many songwriters seem to write in G and it's nice to be able to drop down to the D as the 5th. Thinking about it, in the projects I'm currently involved in, Six tunes need a low D at some point and one needs the low B & C as well so I couldn't play the set with a Four unless I detuned. Technique wise, you get used to it the same as with different neck dimensions, scale lengths etc... -
New bass day 2 of 2: It has just arrived... here is my 2009 model Fender American Steve Bailey 6-string Jazz Bass that I purchased from Vilem (william64). I've never bought a signature bass before, bit of a pet hate to be honest, but this is the only 6-string extended range bass that Fender make so I've been looking out for one since 2012. I can't wait to get started on this bass...
I only found out these even existed a couple of weeks back... how does it play / sound? Also, as a side note... does that fit in your stand properly? I've got a K&M stand that holds the basses from the neck that isnt wide enough for six string necks, also the mini hercules one I have has the upturns at the front of the feet at just the wrong angle for my wal as its right on one of the knobs. I could do with a suitable stand...

Maybe an external preamp might be worth a go? When I first got my Wal I was cutting loads of top end off to get the sound I wanted as the full spectrum was sounding a bit honky to my ears... Once I started running it through my BDDI (50/50 blended with clean signal) I now have both pickups fully open and that full frequency spectrum makes the sound deep, wide and full. Its the sound I had in my head, it just turns out I needed a preamp in addition to the bass to get what I was looking for.

Trevor Bolder's Bass Stuff For Sale On Ebay
CamdenRob replied to madshadows's topic in General Discussion
Those zoot cabs are the previous incarnation of Purple Chili. If you were making a purchase because of the charity thing or the fact they were owned by Mr Bolder then fair enough but a brand new PC 8x10 would be way cheaper. -
Not the Pope on drums?
I can't see past the Wal... might have briefly noticed your rather fetching bishops hat though...
I've always worn daft clothes when doing a gig... I just feel more comfortable that way! Here's me 25 years ago: And here's me last year, aged 50: I find that the dafter I look, the less the audience notice how appalling the music is! And it's still the same boots...
I'd only have noticed the Wal anyway.....

Most unusual 'First New Bass' story? Here's mine...what's yours?
CamdenRob replied to Mick The Hat's topic in Bass Guitars
My first bought new bass was a small bodied Westfield thing in a redburst colour... I was 13 and playing in black metal bands at the time and felt so embarrased playing the desperatly uncool squire P bass I had I couldn't wait to get something more modern looking. Traded the P in against it and later saw the P sell in the same shop for twice what I paid for the Westfield... -
How about Crocs?... nothing says you've given up on style quite like a pair of crocs...
And taste has a lot to do with smell, so...
I hope people aren't paying too close attention to what I smell like when playing live

Has anyone mentioned that you should maybe get an amp instead?
So has anyone made a successful claim after having a bass nicked at a gig?
I'm guessing from the lack of responses this is a no then? When I've looked into specific insurance for my gear before there were so many exclusions it didn't seem worthwhile... not covered if your in a different room etc... Am I supposed to put my bass in a gigbag after soundcheck and carry it around for hours until we play? My gear is unlikely to get nicked whilst I'm playing it, I need cover for the times it's vulnerable.
I'm very partial to a bit of Ziricote Here's mine...
That's a lovely top right there...
This the Macassar does look like a dodgy 70's kitchen worktop lol IMO
70's kitchen worktop was the look i was going for... The decision might be made for me in that the macassar is ever so slightly too narrow for a six string MK3 face and so will need a narrow center block which I'm not really sure about. So it's looking like ziricote for the win.
Actually it's really good on electric, the brilliance control can add a sparkle to the bass, a feature I only found on Rodenberg boost pedals which I really liked
Good stuff... think I'll give them a go. I emailed Fishman a couple of weeks back asking when these would be available in the UK and they said mid December.
-
That's a beautiful instrument... everything compliments everything else.
-
I've just received it after 2 weeks at the customs!!! its better than i expected, I've tried it both on electric bass and upright bass the tuner is really good and also the preamp options like brilliance and the new boost switch is really useful, it gives a lot to the bass defiantly worth the cash and time!
How is it on electric? I've been looking at the smaller version of this as it looks good.... decent eq and a built in HPF.

Learning the notes on the neck is pretty pointless without knowing how they relate to one another.
