Couldn't agree more! Where I come from, if you play originals, folk are not interested. They want the same material that they know they can dance to . We tried originals a while back and got no interest.
It depends what the venue is... round here covers bands play regular pubs, paid to entertain a regular clientele on Friday / Saturday nights. We also have a good Thirty odd live music venues with nightly gigs, where a covers band would look very out of place amongst all the original acts. So on a Fri/Sat night in Camden alone I recon there are a hundred originals bands of various styles playing.

Bryan bought a Mono Strap from me, instant payment, no worries. Deal with confidence.
... transposing to B standard will be my next challenge by the looks of things!
Thats what I'd do to be honest There is really no right or wrong way of tuning your bass, I just feel it's easiest in the long run to play everything in standard.

Just bought a Wizzy 10 from Peter. No problems at all and arrived well packaged in a couple of days. Deal with confidence.
Would a limiter help or a comp with a 'knee'? I've just got a vague idea of those concepts btw...
I'm sure it's just I've not been using them right but I've always found limiting the dynamic range to be a hindrance rather than a help....
-
Pretty much as Bilbo says... I like to turn up and have greater control of the dynamics with my fingers. The tunes in my current band range from just me and a quiet acoustic to full band loud and heavy, so I need a broad range of volume levels in the set.... I've always struggled with compressors for this reason.

Don't think I could negotiate the bus with one...

Four hours? I've only ever played in originals bands and that's an hour tops for a headline slot. Most support slots only half an hour. I get bored of listenig to the same band after a while, kinda feel like its better to leave a venue wishing you'd seen more of a band than to leave thinking you've heard enough of them... Having said that, I went to see Elton John a couple of weeks back and he played for ages and it was great...

When I first joined BC I looked through this thread and though I hadn't owned enough basses to warrant contributing.... This last year has seen me buy Seven basses, sell Four and I'm awaiting three custom builds Damn you BC, I used to have savings...

I really don't mind either a P or J neck and don;t really get the big divide... the neck on my regular gigging bass (spector sixer) is enormous but I have no real issues swapping to a 4 string jazz for a couple of songs when needed.
Wouldn't it be a thing if someone made a 1U pizza oven. P
I was going to suggest a 1U Deathray... but pizza oven would be good.
Have you approached the shop to find out if they'd like to have you on their books as a bass tutor?
This seems like a good approach. I was in a small new guitar store in Camden last weekend and they were looking for a bass tutor to opperate out of their shop, they had a couple of little studio rooms set up for teaching. Students waiting to start apparentely if anyone is interested.

Well I guess they did try the dimension... but that wasn't really breaking new ground as much as trying to grab the attention of people buying stingrays. Everyone is looking back and trying to replicate... not many manufacturers looking forward and trying new things.
-
Also I'd rather see a design with new ideas bringing something different to the table... The "Everyman" is basically just a combination of features currently available elsewhere on mass produced instruments.
-
Thing is though... Each current design is engineered towards a specific sound. If you tried to make a bass that was all things to all people, it would probably fall short in the one thing that people are looking for when buying a specific bass. Also, you will always be lacking something that certain people will want... for example, your bass does not have Wal pickups or a Wal preamp, so for my own personal taste, even with all those mods, it would be missing the first thing I would want from my ultimate bass.
-
I wouldn't bother with the drop tuning and I'd just play it in standard BEADGC tuning, don't really see the point of drop tuning a bass...
-
If you've tried it and your happy I'd go for the one in the shop. There is an enormous variety of bass guitars to choose from these days but the Fender American Standard Jazz & Precision are, along with the Stingray, still the yardstick against which everything else is judged. Mainly because they have been around for so long they produce the archetypal bass sounds we've all been hearing on records over the years. A new USA Fender will be a solid and reliable instrument that will come with a hardcase and last you a lifetime.
I should add that I completely ignore any of the publicity crap that surrounds him and am completely basing my opinion of him based on his music.
I also take this approach.. Completely ignoring all the publicity, I still think he's crap.

All Sold... well one on hold but all gone! As mentioned in another thread I have Five Mono straps that I no longer need... They are fantastic straps just not quite short enough for me... should maybe have thought about that before I bought them for all my basses a while back, but there we go.... I have 2x Grey, 2x Black and 1x Navy These are the short length and I have measured them as 42" from hole to hole at their shortest length and 47" on the longest setting. I have provisionally sold One of the Grey and both Black ones but I need to confirm, so I will update this thread as they go. £10 + postage, I will post them all out on Saturday so I would expect they would arrive on Monday.
