TC Electronic is definately better than Markbass !!
CamdenRob replied to cliffyspliff's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've never been a fan of markbass stuff from the couple of times I've tried out various rigs... It's not really worked for me, despite obviously being quality kit. However, I recently sold a little eden 112 and the girl who bought it brought a new markbass micro head to try with it, 300watt something or other I can't remember the exact model, it sounded really good. Had a couple of filters on it bringing the sound from warm and thumpy to bright and punchy, seemed very versatile to me. I've never tried out any TC stuff with my gear so can't really comment on them.. although they do seem very popular, I've seen loads of their 2x10 cabs around. -
*Gone*... Behringer Ultrabass300 / Hartke VX4x10

Hi Guys, some lovely comments on here . My folks have got fed up with it being in their house, apparentely a large bass amp isn't much of a feature.... I beg to differ... The amp is going next week to a man who needs an amp I've have lots of PMs and It seems there are several people out there in BC land dedicating some of there time to setting up facilities for young bands to get started rehearsing etc... all a bit far away to benfit from this amp but still... BC is definitely doing it's bit and maybe a thread somewhere with the details of these initiatives would be a good read. Cheers Rob -
Popped back to my folks last night and It turns out my old amp and cab from years ago was about to be thrown in the skip... So if you can pick it up it's yours... My folks live in Coggeshall, just of the A120 near Colchester CO6 1QG. If you could pick it up next week sometime that would be great. It all worked last time I used it (about seven years ago), I don't have any cables etc. to test it but I'm sure it's all fine. 300watt head and 400watt 8 ohm 4x10 cab. Sounds good from what I remember but it's damn heavy.... I'm away until Monday so I'll have to wait until then to reply to any PMs. Please can this go to someone who needs an amp and not someone who is going to put it on ebay.....
They are all Letts custom basses (sorry for very late reply I'm not on here much)
You have Three Letts basses? If that pic is 2012 you must have ordered them about 1986 right?

I reckon if you put the same electronics / pickups in a Fender and a Sadowsky they would sound pretty similar... In fact if you put them in a encore it probably wouldn't be too far off...obviously sound is only one aspect of an instrument though, the look and playability would be very different between manufactures and they are just as important.
what air horns...?
The ones the organisers use to indicate the 'quiet time' I've decided that people don't really need that time to check out gear at responsible volume levels...they will be better served by listening to me playing bad slap bass...

Having seen photos of the neck being constructed on my incoming letts custom, it looked like the headstock was a separate piece of wood to the neck... although I may be mistaken....
Although I'm sure it's lovely to play, and undoubtedly superbly made, it looks like someone threw up on it IMHO •• yes I know I have boring and conventional tastes
It did look very impressive in the flesh, the photo doesn't really do it justice... didn't get a chance to play it as it had already been sold. I like a more traditional look as well as the more contemporary designs, I can see beauty in both approaches... except in a single cut.

Anybody tired of the bass guitar merry-go-round ?
I do have GAS for a Fender Delux J5...
I'm very interested in those as well.... just waiting for one to pop up in the marketplace that is a bit cheaper than £50 less than the new price... -
To fretless or not to fretless, that is the question!
CamdenRob replied to Damonjames's topic in Bass Guitars
I would say that I am a predominantly fretted player. I do occasionally played fretless when I feel it's required, just on a couple of songs in the current set. That's just to suit my current project though, who knows what I'll be doing in the future.... I think it's good to have fretless as another trick to bring to the party as a bass player. -

I've spent years trying to find a bass that sounded and played as good as a Wal that I played several years ago... Gave up in the end and ordered one... Should have done that in the first place! Its not going to stop me acquiring more basses though, I like basses and get a lot of pleasure out of trying different ones out. Looking for a good P bass at the moment too, fancy an old Tokai Hardpuncher if the right one comes up. -
OP did stipulate "mass production" basses... I wouldn't apply that term to Ritter basses.
Ah OK fair enough... didn't read that bit!

Have a look through the gallery on the ritter website.... some astounding finishes in there.

Well taste is subjective obviously, so your going to get varied opinions on what's a good looking bass... Personally I like lots of different basses from classic looking fendery types, through fancy wood tops to modern concept style basses, there isn't really one common thing that I like about them all in order to qualify what makes them good looking... However I've never seen an attractive bass featuring a single cut or gold hardware...

Musicians expected to play for nothing by 'generous' venues
So, how do bands build a following if we posited a world where they shouldn't ever play for free?
I don't follow? 'm arguing for playing for free if your not commercially viable enough to warrent charging a fee? -
Why so much buying and selling of basses?
CamdenRob replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in General Discussion
I'm terrible with buying and selling stuff.... As others have said though, buying second hand here, you never really lose out. There is the odd "optimistically" priced bass here and there but so long as you stear clear of those you'll never lose out really... -
Agree with that, the bands that draw tend to be a bit out of the box, the bands that play sex on fire and boys are back in town for the 30th time that year tend to be the ones that struggle. Punters like bands to be a bite more specific these days.
Indeed... Although it depends on the venue obviously. If the Dog and Duck's punters want rock covers and thats what brings people out, then as the top band doing that sort of thing in your area you can also charge a premium. It all boils down to whether a venue will make money from the people who are there to see you. -
There seems to be an assumption in this thread that whether or not a band is only able to play for free only depends on the quality of the product.
The 'quality' of a band is subjective and utterly irrelevent... what counts is how many people will turn out to watch them. If people will come to the venue to watch you, then you have something the venue can benefit from and you are therefore in a position to charge for your product... If no-one cares about your band, it doesnt matter at all how good you are, the marketability of your product depends on people coming out to see you who would otherwise be at home. -
I've never really been convinced of the merits of a noise gate... surely once a signal loud enough to open the gate passes through all the hiss comes through as well? so it's only really getting rid of hiss when your not playing any notes? Or have I got that wrong?
Oh, please no... not you or anyone else...
It's OK, if I'm not quite up to standard in time I'll make up for the lack of a solid technique by playing louder....

Excellent... that gives me almost a year to get my slap technique up to scratch so I can be one of the cool kids....
As far as I am concerned we don't play venues that don't pay... I am just saying that it doesn't help if others do..
If you are getting paid for your gigs then your band is obviously offering something that the free bands aren't... If the venues your playing could get what you provide for free then they would... but they can't so they pay you guys -

CamdenRob replied to Bassnut62's topic in General Discussion
A venue is there to make money... To them, your music is a product that brings more people into their venue. If your product is generic (your band plays the same stuff as everyone else at the same standard) then a venue will not pay you as they can get the same effect (more people through the door) by getting a band in that will pay for free. If your music is unique (other bands / musicians cannot offer a comparable product) and a venues clientele only turns out for the music that you are providing then they will have to pay you... and they will as it's in their financial interests to do so. Those complaining about not getting paid, how unique is what you are doing? Could you be replaced by another local band and the audience wouldn't even notice? Getting paid for music is like getting paid for anything else. You have to offer something the competition doesn't.
