I tend to do this anyway as part of the creative process. You know - just play ALL the notes to see what they sound like. If I knew all my scales to the nth degree, would I be tempted to follow certain patterns and get into particular muscle-memory routines..? Would I end up playing the same things all the time?
I've found knowing my scales streamlines the way I come up with basslines... rather than trying ALL the notes, I know a set combination that will work in any given key, not just eight notes up and down, but using multiple octaves of the scale both up and down from the root gives endless posibilities. Folks tend to think of using scales as playing through them incrementally... thats not really how it works. It's more a pattern of notes that you know will work. It's not as strict as that really though... it's just a guideline that I find helps me to be more creative.

Richard bought my Genz 212, no problems whatsoever... deal with confidence.

Musicians expected to play for nothing by 'generous' venues
CamdenRob replied to Bassnut62's topic in General Discussion
Why does everyone who can play an instrument think the world owes them a living? The only way you will make money from your music is if someone else can make more money out of it... be that a label or a restaurant looking to bring people in. No matter how good you think you are, unless your doing something everyone else isn't why would anyone pay you for it? I love my music and playing in bands... but I have to work full time on the side to pay for it. -
Thanks again guys. Well, as you were saying in the 'Last Gig' thread, one door shuts and another opens. Just found out I'll be playing every day at Glastonbury, and got three dates in Brazil before that, I get a proper fee too. Funny old world init
Thats great news! onwards and upwards...

I'd love to be one of those players that just instinctively plays the right notes without knowing anything about the underlying theory, just jamming along to stuff and naturally playing nice flowing basslines in the correct key... Unfortunatly i am just not that naturally talented... Knowing my scales, modes, diatonic theory etc. has given a non natural like me the chance to write interesting basslines and hold my own with some great musicians over the years. Theory has given me the chance to play and compose material I would never have just been able to invent out of nothing. It's also given me the confidence at a jam that I can get up and play any style, even if I've never heard it... tell me the key sig and I'm off. Scales work for me

Murielle picked up a cab from me yesterday. Couldn't have gone better, great comms, turned up bang on time, no silly haggling. Rob

Our local one in Camden has a particularly annoying young lady who keeps following me around the shop... I asked her for an SD card the other day and instead of showing me where they were she proceeded to explain at great length (with lots of arm waving and direct eye contact) that I could save more stuff on 32GB on than I could save on a 16GB one.... really? Well thank heavens you were here to bestowe upon me that sagacious insight into the hughly complicated world of memory cards.... without which I would surely have been bedazzaled by the confusing mass of different sized cards available and run out of the shop in a daze... I'm begening to think this is part of a bigger problem. Why does a simple question have to turn into someone explaining their life story to me? seriously this happenes all the time. On the tube, in sainsburys, sometimes just walking down the street What is it about me that gives the impression I'm remotely interest in anyone elses life?

This sounds kinda fun... I'll give it a whirl... I'm an ugly bastard though so you'll probably want to film from the neck down....

There is of course a fair chance it is unplayably crap... An unusable plank is still an unuseble plank.... even if it only cost £13...

I've got one of these I've been using with an MB200. It's not bad at all for the price. In fact I don't really need mine anymore with an incoming pair of 112s. I'd let it go for £100 inc a rock solid cover... would have to collect from London though. It's 4 ohm 300watt.

I'm using D'Addario Prosteels on all my bases at the moment, they do everything I'm looking for. Warm and bright without being tinny and clanky. Depends what sort of sound you are looking for though, different strings drastically alter your tone, it's a very personal choice. Strings are as much a part of your sound as your bass and your amp, worth trying a few to find what suits you best.

I've been turned down for loads of bands... always though it was that my playing didn't really fit their idea of what their music should sound like... Now I know it's cause I'm tall and bald that makes it much easier to deal with the rejection....
Can i have first option if shipping does become available ? - I did ask first
Yes of course. I'm going to hang out for a while though, there is a bit of interest in picking the remaining cab up.
If their was a Sreamliner 600 available in the marketplace I would snap this up straight away
I've not tried the streamliner myself, I've been running these with a shuttlemax. I would imagine it would be a cracking combination though. Still undecided as to whether I'll keep the shuttlemax... It sounds wonderful but I'm a bit wary of massively overpowering whatever 112s I end up using...

Meeh it's OK... she can obviously play. Thing is I bet at least half of BCs 30'000 members could play covers this well. Would they get 14'000 views though? How many of those views are for the bass playing and how many for a pretty girl?
I do agree on the smartphone screen thing though and the iPad ?? Well what's that all about at a gig ?!
It's because the vast majority of people these days are only at a big gig so they can later document it on facebook and show off to their friends... It's the modern equivilent of someone showing you through books and books of holiday photos... Look how exciting my life is! Are you jelous yet? Don't know why people can't just go out and enjoy an event... sod what it looks like to other people, no-one cares... How can you have a good time if your constantly worried about how it will look to other people when you show them videos / pics etc.
