Beauty in bass aesthetics is in the eye of the beholder as with everything... Personally I think a P bass looks fine but I find PJ setups a bit jarring on the eye ... also uneven P pickups on a 5 string look weird.
I'll be out of action for a while very shortly, so I thought I'd get this done whilst I can. Here's a Casady-inspired riff that I use for keeping my fingers from seizing up (s'not working that well this evening..! ). As video seems to be the latest fad, I've shot this with my webcam, one take, no edits (as you'll see..!) directly into VideoPad from my armchair, using our Cort fiver, MM p/up, tones centred. The audio track is raw Reaper, rendered then added to the video. Another one for the Noodle Pot; enjoy.
Great stuff dad... I like the little riff at around 1.05 you run around a couple of times... could hang a tune on than
Aria SB... mine (an SB700) was bought in 82 (although the serial no says it's strictly an 81). You own Wals, Rob, so the fact that they're built from ash-effect lead shouldn't be an issue!
That instrument has aged considerably better than I have over the last 35 years...

A few more options to go on the list Haven't even thought about roadstars...
Back to flats soon, although I've been enjoying rounds.
Different strings for different basses I find... I love flats on a P bass but can't imagine my Wal with anything other than rounds... it's got to be rounds on a fretless for me too.

Been thinking about a YOB bass recently... 1982. Not a bad year for basses really; Fullerton Reissues, Tokai jazz sound / hardpuncher, shergold marathons... anything else I should be keeping an eye out for?
Ok here's mine. Sorry for the bad camera work. My basses action is very very low atm so its a bit noisey the strings clank a bit. Most of that is actually the bass acoustically itself, rather than what's coming out the amp. I sort of like it and sort of don't at the same time lol. http://youtu.be/Df_cfnz067M
Nice I think your bass sounds great, new strings?
-
...the notes seemed a bit clanky rather than ringing out. Very low action?
Naah just poor technique...

A new Month it is, so time for a new noodle... Been messing around with ways of recording better videos, I'm slowly getting there but this was a bit of a test run really. I've had a go at recording the audio direct for better quality. I've also realised I need to come up with a way of starting / ending these better so its not quite so abrupt. I've bought a simple ABY box to split the signal from my bass, taking a line to my amp (so I can hear what I'm doing) and another line to my little Boss BR80 recorder. I then lined them up in iMovie. Anyway on with the noodle... Used a looper for this one which I know is a bit cheeky as it's not strictly naked bass as it were but ah well... just this once Each part is layered as I play it and nothing is pre-recorded so I don't feel too bad about it... also in traditional noodle fashion my timing is a bit ropey on the twiddly section, but being a noodle a second take didn't seem appropriate Having kicked things off for another month l'm looking forward to seeing / hearing what you chaps are working on

I haven't placed a preorder but to be honest, if the reviews from those that have are half way good I'll be getting one of these. It's half the size of the mb200 and that's tiny... ... breaking new ground, I hope it's up to it

I'm back here again as I don't feel the smiley quite conveyed my astonishment that an instrument this unattractive actually exists... Somebody designed this... with its beautiful lines and ergonomic aesthetic... the way the scratch plate seemlessly flows with the body shape... the headstock complimenting the body in perfectly harmony. Could this perhaps have been the first single cut? Weren't Burns a respectable brand at the time? I've seen basses from this era that were manufactured behind the iron curtain from old tank parts that are easier on the eye. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that but this truly is a shocker... I wish I hadn't looked at it again right before bed.

Mrs C has some friends involved in the folky / acousticy type scene here in London where nearly every pub, coffee shop, vegan peace cafe etc. Has a small stage in the corner and a promoter is paid by the venue to provide a sensitive man with a beard to sing songs complaining about stuff. Some of her friends gig most nights, all originals. Whenever I have been to these gigs I am almost always the only person who buys a beer / coffee / vegan peace biscuit, everyone else including the other acts just drinks tap water all night... whole tables of people with a pint of tap water each... I can't see the venues thinking its worth it for much longer.

This is an ebony board gents... with clay dots. I may be mistaken but I don't think Moollon use rosewood? I seem to remember being told at the time I ordered it was due to availability in Korea.
Rob, have you tried her with Chromes or LaBella? Would be a lovely bass to keep for those occasions of variance.
I did try LaBellas on it first off as I'd liked them previously but they didn't quite feel right to me on this bass. I preferred the TIs to the rounds it's currently sporting but if I keep it I think I'll give chromes a go.
Have to say, I like that.
It's the best compromise I've seen. Looks like this from the top. and like this from the front. Not the best pictures to illustrate the point to be honest but i don't have the bass anymore so that's the best i can do!

Sold Moollon P Classic - Faded Sonic Blue with a Mint guard. £1500 A touch under 4kg according to my luggage scales. So my personal P Bass saga continues... When I don't have a P bass I think to myself I really should get one, it's a classic tone and it'd be useful to have in the stable. So I buy one and then it sits in the corner unplayed... I should just admit to myself that I am a dyed in the wool Wal man and nothing else sounds quite right in my hands. So I have decided to let this wonderful bass go. A decision I will no doubt change my mind about once it's gone Imported last year direct from Moollon and to be honest I've not played a better P bass. It is light, resonant and the tone control ranges from a crystal clear shimmer to lovely thumpy vintage vibe. The build quality is flawless and if you are interested in these you are probably already aware of the attempt to create a pre-CBS vibe with these instruments. Currently strung with a fresh set of D'Addario NYXLs but I can also include a set of TI flats if preferred, which is how I have been playing it. Anyway enough waffle on with the pictures. Condition is flawless to my eyes. Never gigged and only used for a couple of rehearsals and at home. OHSC and all case candy, Moollon strap etc. This will be COLLECTION ONLY from London NW1. I am in no hurry to sell and to be honest I'm not even really sure I want too, so please don't ask me to ship. I'm happy to wait for a buyer who can collect, although depending on distance / timings / cost I could meet at a train station on a direct line out of London You are more than welcome to try her out evenings or weekends Payment by Bank Transfer please.

I'm having quarter lines on my incoming Wal. A previous bass had them and they were barely visible from the front but from the playing position looked like full lines

Times change, things move on... not necessarily for better or for worse just a changing of the times. The charts are no longer filled with bands featuring bass guitars and a large percentage of young people would rather be playing video games than music. The video thing is symptomatic of the times... most of us under 40 lead a significant part of our lives online and it's a natural progression to share videos of our playing / comment on others doing the same. I think the tendency to move into guitar territory is simply that low register thumping bass doesn't necessarily make for good solo viewing... Personally I like to see the broad spectrum of what people are doing with a bass these days. The bass guitar is a versatile instrument... why not experiment 😊 Great post by the way... a well worded and balanced way to open a discussion
Nothing wrong with Oasis of course
Pardon?

Ah good this again... I play a sixer. I'd get away with a five for 90% of what I do in bands but I like to dabble with chords and higher register melody type stuff too, especially when I'm just noodling at home. I don't find the extra strings a hindrance in a band situation so why not I'm so used to playing a six string now, my four strings feel strange when I first pick them up. I hardly ever play open strings ether and tend to play further up the neck on the lower strings instead. I find I cramp up less that way live keeping everything more compact. I find it sounds more consistent across the full range as well... well to my ears anyway

Been contemplating this again recently... well not one bass but two (one fretted, one fretless). I have a lovely P and a fretless J because I keep telling myself they are useful to have in the locker, but in truth I never pick either up over my Wal.
Even more interesting... Ugh. Gonna have to go try one I reckon.
They look great don't they... Anyone know the string spacing?

2x 110s serve me fine Plenty of volume and bass in a package I can actually get to the gig.
