1.
Whats everyones opinion on the Spector performers or Warwick Rockbasses? Know they are the low end but coming from well know companies is worth considering?
I've had a Spector legend classic sixer for a while now and to be honest, it's a great bass... the fit and finish are actually better than my German Warwick and US Fenders... Very modern scooped tone though, bright and deep. You should be able to find a 5 string well within your budget. I think these are a lot of bass for the money.
2. All sounded a bit fuzzy to me... Think I just like my bass a bit cleaner. Nice playing though The Stagg EB3 sounded the best to me... and that ric sounded f***ing awful..
3.
...anyone who slings their bass low is as rubbish as Sid vicious.
This...
4.
Reading the couple of recent Wal themed threads made me wonder if we shouldn't try and do a Wal themed bass day? We'd get as many Wals as possible together in the same room so that folks who have always wanted to have a go on one but have never had the opportunity could do so. It'd also be fun for us Wal owners to see and hear our own instruments in the context of a whole bunch of their relatives. I wonder how many we could get? We might even get Paul Herman to come along as Pete and Wal's representative on Earth. Phil
Where do I sign up?
5.
That's really exciting news, Rob. Good for you. It might seem like a long wait now , but it will give you plenty to think about and look forward to in the meantime, so try and enjoy the anticipation as well as actually getting the bass.
It seems like an age away! I'm looking forward to going down to the workshop next year sometime and going through the various options. I went for it in the end as I could have been waiting forever for the right one to come up on the second hand market... and to be honest the prices aren't that different for new vs used anyway...
6. I saw a guy playing a Ray at the blues kitchen in Camden a little while back. It sounded amazing... really punchy and tight. The classic in black with the figured maple neck is on my list of stuff I'd like to have in the collection. Although it'll have to wait until after the Wal arrives....
7.
There is a brief interview with Jack Monck (with his Wal) on his work with Syd Barrett on this documentary. From 40:00.
Wow... Thank you so much for digging this out for me... amazing... I might have to feign illness at work so I can go home and watch this. You know he never name dropped or gave the impression he had ever worked with anyone prestigious. A gentleman and the best player I have ever seen in the flesh.
8. I play my bass to high for this sort of shot...
9. I've tried several people off gumtree and a couple off join my band... mind you there is no shortage of people looking for bass players in London.
10.
Camdenrob, what options have you gone for?
It's early days at the moment so I've not nailed everything down on the options yet. I wanted a MK3 6 string fretted so that's settled. Also, Paul mentioned that the Brazilian Mahogany they use for the body cores varies quite considerably in weight from piece to piece, so he recons he can find me a lightish one... having said that sixers are always going to be heavy!. I'd be happy with the common American Walnut top... considering a matching headstock too. It's so far off actually being finished, I'll work with them depending on what suggestions they make. It's the sound I'm after and they know more about how to get that than I do by selecting random woods that look nice. Paul said when the neck is done (3 months or so) I'll go down to their workshop and he'll go through various top wood choices etc depending on what they have got available as he might have some one off tops in there. I'm going to attempt to get back in touch with the old bass tutor at my collage and find out what options he had on his, as that's the sound I've got in my head. I wonder if he's a member here... or even still alive... Jack Monk he was called, I've no idea who he played with in the past but If I could sound half as good at this guy and his Wal I'd be a happy man. *Edit* After a bit of googling it would appear its spelt Monck and he has a wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Monck) He is still teaching at the collage I went too... email sent, hope he gets it, this guy is my bass hero...
11.
excellent, good man I'm glad i started this thread & i'm excited for you too. P.s. Please leave me it on your bucket list
Ah it's been coming for a while... this thread just pushed me over the edge.
12. My love of Wal comes from a bass tutor we used to have at collage.... As part of a joke music collage course I did when I was 16 to keep us off the streets, we had to take lessons on our chosen instrument. We all sat there plugged straight into the desk of a standard education establishment PA. There were Fenders, loads of Ibanezes, a couple of Warwicks, a few squires and I had a Status Stealth at the time. None of us expected anything from the lesson as we all 'knew it all already' what hell could this old geezer with the timid character and weird looking bass teach us. Well... he had a Wal... I've never heard anything sound so good. The guy could play some serious bass but I'd never before appreciated the value of a good bass sound. At the time for me it was all about playing in ridiculous time signatures and coming up with the most complex stuff possible. This guy was the absolute antithesis of that, his Wal brought the simplest of lines to life... A great player and a great bass. Ever since I've been going through every type of bass possible thinking that I would find something as good and in truth I never have. So this morning I placed my order... Summer 2015 I'll have what I should have ordered 15 years ago...
13. I keep reading this thread as 'thinking of gutting my band' on the forum index.... sounds a bit extreme.
14. I saw one of these in Wunjos at the weekend... should have tried it out really, it looked really good.
15. Yeah I noticed all the additional content, complicated stuff... The sound out front could have been a bit clearer to be honest. The jazz sounded good and tight and the vocals came through OK, everything else got a bit lost... lots of head nodding and the occasional dance move around going on in the crowd though We'll definitely be at the next one, you guys are excellent live.
16. Stick with the Stingray... PJ basses look weird...
17. Can walk from Kings Cross to the gallery in about 15 minutes .. bit grumpy in there, but far and away the best selection of basses in London.
18. This interaction with someone from the shop it's self is excellent and can only help GAK. BC is a large community of bass gear buyers. You've only got to look at the Genz NX212Ts that came in a couple of weeks back... judging from the thread BC accounted for more than half of them. Makes sense to have someone on hand to interact with us
19.
Hello Rob, I don't know if you made it tonight but if you did I'm very sorry I missed you mate.
We were indeed there no worries about not catching up, next time maybe, you guys looked pretty manic after your set and we thought we'd leave you to it. Great turn out, have you played there before? That was a decent crowd for a bill of originals bands on a Tuesday night. A lot of it was for you guys as well, seemed to thin out a bit after you'd finished. Liked the new tune as well, partly as you've got a more prominent part in it! Hopefully make the Hoxton one Rob
20. Why did you have to start this thread... Now I've been forced to ask Paul if my quote from Two months ago is still valid....
21.
i hope you manage to find one matey as i'm sure an 18 month wait would be a nightmare...
Thing is, If I'd have ordered it when I got the quote two months ago it'd only be 16 months now.... Maybe after the christmas madness I'll take the plunge...
I wonder if anyone wants to but a pickled kidney
I already have two of those....
22. Yep, I'm firmly in the really, really, really, really, really want a Wal camp as well... Thing is I want a MK3 6er. I've sorted out with Paul what I want... and a price... I just can't bring myself to sign up for the 18 months I've been quoted for him to make it. So now I'm just waiting in hope that what I want comes up second hand somewhere... I have faith BC will come up with one for me eventually...
23. Not for me I'm afraid... They are no doubt well designed and well made, I just don't like the tone. I tried a few different basses through a number of head / cab combinations at the gallery a little while back and couldn't find anything that wasn't,
...wooly, undefined, and flappy...
As with everything though, tone is subjective and they obviously aren't bad cabs. Just not what I'm looking for.
24. I had good customer service from them in the past my only gripe is that they advertise literally everything in the bass world that is available to buy, then try to get hold of something when someone orders it... I've had orders delayed for months then eventually cancelled when it turns out the item isn't available. They should only advertise stuff they can actually sell you.
25. What time are you guys on tonight mate?
