Walked past wunjos on denmark street yesterday on the way to buy a reed from the sax shop with the missus... One of these was in the window... Now I've never been a P bass man but I was informed by MrsCamdenRob that this was the "best looking bass she'd ever seen" and insisted that I stand and look at if for a while.... and then told me I should buy it.... Now I've got a couple of nice jazzes, a few coffee table jobs and a spector but apperantely this is what does it for my better half... Fortunately wunjos was closed.... mental note to not go back to the sax shop on a weekday.... ...after a bit of a dig it turns out this actually may have been a resprayed original 63 but anyway the look of it is the point here.

Fenders.... a definite no on the goats cheese though...

Have all the expensive basses been a waste of time?
This is not ugly..? (and I'm an Alembic fan, but still...)
Looks like a pretzel... -
At one point I HAD to have an Alembic. The sound was so unique. Then suddenly, that sound got on my nerves. And all I was looking at was a really ugly bass.
I know perception is subjective and all that... but your right... Alembics really are ugly... -
Looks like the date stamp to me. Can't quite make it out though.

Glamour models can't play bass - fact.
CamdenRob replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
The bass players I have seen wouldn't make particularly good glamour models either... -
I remember it was an old Hohner violin bass with rubber strings... Was it ceremonially burned?
Rubber strings? nice... I bought a fretless recently that was strung with nylons... felt like playing a bunch of chives...
We had nothing at school really there were a couple of old keyboards and a couple of old bashed up 6 string acoustics and a few recorders and maracas only the kids who had well off parents did any kind of proper music such as the violin or electric guitar as they bought there own instruments and did paid after school lessons.
Thats true, my folks certainly couldn't afford music lessons... I had a Saturday job in a cheese shop when I was 13 to buy first my bass... I was into metal at the time and they gave me a rather fetching green hair net to wear....
Im Head of Music at a secondary school so we are fairly well kitted out bass wise :-) Only started in September but we have 4 Ibanez GSR's, and 6 no name Jazz copies that sound OK. Ampeg BA108 amp, Peavey Tour 400 amp... also, 5 JamHub setups, loads of squire strats and steel string acoustics, Fender Mustang modelling guitar amps... Yamaha electric kits, Sonor acoustic kits.... Behringer PAs in each room. All new too! Kids are loving it!
Excellent stuff...
...I remember the amp too - a 1x15 combo branded 'Cougar', who I have never heard of since. I remember most of the knobs and sliders didn't do much to the sound but I loved feeling the air moving when I turned it up.
oh we didn't have an amp... the plank was played acoustically, it was inaduibly quiet when playing with any other instruments... probably for the best in hindsight...

There seems to be a shocking lack of bass representation in schools if this thred is anything to go by... Think I might donate one to my local school...

Depends how much you want it really... I've been responding to online adverts looking for bass players, got another band to jam with next week. It seems to work quite well, they send me some tunes, I send them some examples of my playing. If they like it I learn a couple of their tunes and go for an audition. I've tried a couple that didn't work out, no biggie though, I'll just keep looking. My problem is that I work full time and have a decent career that is way more important to me than music... the people I hook up with seem to be in the "rock stardom is my only hope" mindset.
To be quite honest, I think that our music teacher just wanted to have an easy time, he would put on a classical record, sit at his desk with his eyes closed obviously chilling to the music for the full 30 minutes, he never taught us anything about reading or understanding music in any way.
Ours was the ethereal Miss King... took us all out onto the field for our first lesson with an acoustic, sat us round in a circle and sang to us... She left after being caught smoking something dubious in the teachers lounge...
School bass. Are you kidding? I wanted to do o level music but as only one other person wanted to we couldn't Music lessons were a balding middle aged bloke trying to engage teenagers in 1975 by playing Shadows albums on the education authority style record player which we could make jump by stamping on the floor when he turned his back to draw a crotchet on the blackboard.
No record player but we did have a number of these.... They were of marginal better quality than the bass....

Anyone else remember their school bass guitar.... Ours was truly awful...no name short scale thing that looked like it had been made in the music teachers shed (possibly had), hand painted in olive green, it had had its frets removed and was strung with the oldest flats in existance (three of them - the A string was a roundwound). It seemed to disapear completely after my first couple of years at school, which must have meant it was finally put out of its misery, or inexplicably... someone stole it... We did have a reasonable DB though.... Rob
Yes more than one missus can be problematic....

That's the understatement of the week.
I've had some limited success recently with only having one out on the stand at a time and keeping the others in their cases under the bed...

Do you 'get' this joke..? Assistance, please...
CamdenRob replied to Dad3353's topic in General Discussion
How have I ended up back here again... -
Where is the joke about jazz knitting and the free bass stuff? I want a refund....

I bought a squire P bass out of the local paper classifieds when I 13... cost me £50 if I remember rightly. That was the most overpriced bass I've ever encountered.... firewood...
I am only 20 years old, and despite my two and a half years driving experience, I believe that this is not an option for me
Yeah they have some crazy rules car hire companies. I only did my test just over a year ago and that was the last time I drove... and they would hire me a car no problem at all with absolutely zero experiance....
