1. I was being a bit of a doughnut... mine fits in fine if I just have the headstock at an angle. Not much use for on stage though... mind you to be honest live I always keep my basses in the gig bag when i'm not playing them.
  2.
...I had to go to work on my stands by gently opening the hefty metal neck supports.
Been investigating this possibility but I think the bits the heads hang from on my current stand are plastic not metal...
  3. Did you find anything in the end? I had one of those ones that dood posted for a while but I was always worried about clattering basses against each other... 😕 I'd really like one when I can hang my wide necked basses from the headstock.
  4. Sounds like you need a new one 😊
  5.
True to his word Paul has just send me a photo of the completed bass. IMG_7933 by John Robertson, on Flickr
Looks fantastic bet you can't wait to get it home?
  6.
That's what I do. I play guitar too, so pick up the structure/chords from watching the guitarist's left hand. Why he thought it was wrong for you to do so, Gawd knows. Would expect him to be pleased you are someone who uses his loaf.
Yes quite... I've played enough guitar to recognize the open chord shapes, so by watching you can kind of see in advance what the next chord is... capos catch me out though I think to be honest they were trying to find a reason to not give me the gig besides "You're too fat, too bald and your bass has too many strings" ... I suspect the next song would have required me to stand outside the rehearsal room so I couldn't hear the drummer...
  7. Another thing that always surprises me and I was reminded of it again when I visited last week, is that Paul only puts out Two or Three completed instruments a month... The man's commitment to quality is admirable... nothing is rushed.
  8.
Rob, you happen to grab any pics while at Wal HQ? the ones you spoke about sound intriguing.
I didn't unfortunately... it was a bit of a quick visit before work. One thing I intended to take a photo of was the neck rack where Paul keeps work in progress and recently completed necks, kinda looks like a wine rack. The bottom row was reserved for "Serial offenders" and had the names of regular customers printed above the slots... My name was there, as I assume was yours and Mike
Rob, that trans green Mk3 I know is on order for guy in the San Francisco area here in the States.
It was something special... really stood out. the matched headstock looked fantastic
Yes, a 4 string Mk2 in trans red gloss. probably done around Aug of '18.
I was asking Paul about the trans gloss finishes and he said they were almost exclusively for you guys on that side of the pond... The standard of finishing is exquisite, I think I may be tempted by a trans finish on a future build.
  9. Auditions for originals bands are always bizarre... I went to one last year for a rocky punky type thing. Learnt all the tracks from a demo they sent me, they were ok, nothing special but lively and fun. When I turned up it was obvious I was a poor fit. The songs sounded good but I definitely didn't have the image they were after. Fair enough I thought, lets just see it through anyway. After playing the songs from the demo they decided to "try and catch me out" by playing something I hadn't heard... bit odd I thought but whatever. I asked what key it was in and off we went... again sounded pretty good. I was then told "right this time I'm not telling you the chords" ... erm ok... again it sounded fine. The songs were pretty simple stuff and I worked it out from looking at the guitarists chord shapes what was coming up... following this I was told that I couldn't look at what he was playing anymore and the next track consisted of him standing in the corner so I couldn't see the fretboard... by the time he'd finished and turned round I'd left... 😐
  10.
Added a black and gold Mk2 to the fold. Also sold off my last Mk1.
Lovely You got any being built at the moment?
  11.
...has anyone tried "Gorgomite" ?
Gorgomite? 😕 ... sounds like something brewed up in a cauldron whilst wearing a pointy hat...
  12. A) obviously... what's wrong with you people...
  13. Paid a visit to Wal HQ this morning to pick up my ziricote sixer fresh from a service. Plays like a dream after a setup and a bit of TLC... Some real works of art in progress. A very eye catching trans green high gloss mk3 four string over quilted maple with a matching headstock and a gorgeous recently completed spalted maple mk3 fiver which prompted me to choose a similar top for my incoming fretless from the huge selection Paul has in Stock... some astonishing bits of wood, pretty much something for all tastes. Lots in progress by the looks of it and a full order book
  14.
Excited for you Rob, is your new build close to being finished?
No still a little way away unfortunately... maybe six months. Hopefully going to have a look at some facing wood options on Friday I'm just going down to pick up my Ziricote sixer that's been in for a service.
  15.
The replacement body for my 1988 MK1 is almost ready. It was originally black poly and I will get around to sharing the full story soon. IMG_1582 by John Robertson, on Flickr
I'm down at Wal towers Friday morning... I'll keep an eye out for it, looks great
  16. One in a hotel with a decent bar somewhere accessible sounds fun... Although I suspect that would end up being more of a beer bash than a bass bash... mind you either suits me.
  17. Parple burp boom ting rumble punch...
  18. Guinne....
Guinness always works for me
ah... beaten to it

    NBD - ACG

Looks fantastic... as usual for ACGs
  20. Same problem here... I'd like one that supports the bass from the neck but can't find one with a wide enough grip.
  21.
Review on the amp will be forthcoming if/when I can get off the Elf at the end of the month.
Very much looking forward to that... If this little amp is anywhere near loud enough to be usable I'll pick one up.
  22. Girls Aloud circa 2006...
  23. Also i really fancy a Gus... not played one but they look awesome.
  24. The Wal thing is odd for me... Until I joined basschat I had never heard of any of their "name" players of yesteryear... I just played one and it sounded better than everything else I'd ever tried. Mine are sixers though so the chance of them ever being worth anywhere near what I paid for them is minimal... no bother though... I intend to play them to *death anyway * mine or theirs
  25. Always Fenders... they will always be the oldest.
