OK the right thing to do would have been to take it back however I wanted to try and work out how to do it for myself. I dug out the tool thingy and gave it a quarter turn to the left (counter clockwise) buzz completely gone now, hopefully it won't come back, if it does I know I've got an issue. It's a 50th anniversary jazz and I'd rather just play it than keep faffing around with it... Thanks for the advice though gents, much appreciated. Rob

all he will need is your bank account and sort code details........
Other way round! Tighten to increase the rod tension counteracting the strings (head back), loosen to allow the strings pull more (head forward).
Was worth checking then! Thanks.
MB1. I know what I'd be doing! Phoning the Gallery to tell them to put the kettle on! P.S If you mess with it and make it worse any liability the Gallery may be under goes out the window!.
Yeah that's true... Whilst I'm a bit annoyed they havent sorted it out (although due to the aforementioned temp differences it might not be their fault), I would quite like this opportunity to learn how to do it myself.

Just to clarify. Tightening would make the neck more curved, ie. bring the head forwards and loosening will make the neck flatter?
-
Thanks guys, sound advice. I'll have a little look at it tonight.
If you've just paid the gallery to do a set up & fix the problem - & they haven't - I'd get it back to them before trying anything else.
Yeah I think that might be the answer, It was fine when I tested it in the shop then a couple of days later the buzz came back... Maybe I have bigger problems with this bass
If the fret buzz is on the first few frets then you loosen it, after the 12th you tighten it. No need to loosen the strings, otherwise you'd be at it all day.
Its on the first few frets so I should loosen it? Its annoying actually, I just got it back from the gallery last week where they were supposed to have set it up to stop this... Rob
In most cases it's the old "righty tighty, lefty loosey" (looking down from the adjusting side of the tr. If you're unsure as it's a non standard make or model, then look down the neck and take a mental note of the curve then tweak a little and check again you'll be able to see which way it's gone. Obviously if the strings are still on you will know straight away whether or not you are going in the desired direction.
OK cool thanks, I'll give it a whirl tonight, Rob

Quick question. I need to adjust the truss rod on my jazz, fret buzz becoming an issue... which way do I turn it to tighten it (I assume I want to tighten it?) I've always assumed clockwise for some reason? Also do I loosen the strings off before adjusting anything? Cheers Rob

I think the recording forum is excellent as it currently stands, a bit of a revamp of some areas as has been suggested can't hurt, but overall I think this is not only one of BCs most friendly forums but also one of the most useful. I certainly spend a lot of time here. I tend not to listen to stuff people post in threads of their own but I always give every composition competition entry a listen. Maybe those who post their own bands music and expect everyone to listen and comment should consider entering something in the composition competition? This is where I have discovered several BCers soundcloud accounts which I now follow and listen to all their new stuff. If people get to know you through the forum they are more likely to listen to your stuff. Rob

This is a nice thread Being into bass playing is like being into anything really, if it makes you happy stick with it... I also came back to the bass in March 2013 after several years in the wilderness... my post count is very similar to yours in that time. I've been through five basses, a custom build bass and preamp on the go, written several tunes, joined a band and even managed to find a bass on Ebay that got nicked from me Seven years ago!... hopefully winding its long legal way back to me as we speak. I blame BC for all this... last time around I was happy with one bass, one amp and a tuner... Rob
Fingers crossed for you bud i hope you reach a positive result
Thanks man, who knows... The worse thing about these photos is that the bass looks the same but I'm much younger, thinner and with considerably more hair.... Its proving that that is me that might be the problem... Rob
Small world, huh?
It is a small world... without basschat I would never have found out about it!
Anything happened with this ? Was watching the auction...
It's with the police now they are chasing it up with all parties involved. I'm not holding out too much hope to be honest Its going to be very difficult to prove it was mine as the shop I bought it from is long gone...as is the receipt... I have managed to get into contact with an old friend who took some photos one rehearsal we did years back and apperantely she still has them on her computer so hopefully I'll get something through today. At least I will have some photos of me with a Stealth II 5 string, the problem I fear will be proving that that exact one was mine. The real clincher will be if I can find the missing tuner and winding mechanism....now where on earth would I have put that. A quick thumbs up for the police though. Even though this was years ago I was treated very professionally when I rang up and the various departments phoned me back when they said they would... very positive. Rob

Managed to get in touch with the seller - forwarded the crime reference number and the officer dealing with the case so hopefully they can sort something out between them. Its a real long shot as this happened six and a half years ago but who knows... Need to get in touch with some old buddies and get hold of some photos of me and the bass. Rob

Bastards... still my own fault really, should have made more of a fuss about it at the time! I've got no hope of getting it back now...

Hang on a minute this was mine! it got nicked by an old guitarist after i broke the machine head at a rehearsal about six years ago! How do I go about this? Never expected it to show up again... Rob

I've never really understood the bad press pick playing gets either, surely it a personal preference... It's as much about the notes you choose to play as it is how you choose to play them. I've never played with a pick myself, I think it sounds pants but like everything, it takes all sorts this bass playing lark... Rob
See, I was that tired that I put pm instead of am. Or was it the 9 pints of lager?
That makes more sense.... in which case that's only Three hours and I understand your issue. The aforementioned Nine pints of lager usually help me nod off... Rob
