When are you too old to learn? IMHO if you're to old to learn, you're probably too old to hold a bass... sad times. You could take a look here for some stuff to read without tabs. http://basschat.co.u...-to-learn-with/ Stuff I've loaded up is mostly stuff with a tune to it without having to have a backing track. Ok it's not a real bass line, but it's music. Good luck mate Rich
Yeah I saw your post a few days ago with those pieces attached, I'll give them all a go once I'm a bit further down the line... they look like a great exercise to judge how far I've come. I'm assuming that after a while I won't be reading each note individually but instead seeing a sequence of notes and translating that to a tune... like we do with reading words, ie. we don't read each individual letter but more a phrase as a whole at a glance... obviously this will take time and practice but I imagine thats how it goes eventually. I have decided that it is about time I learnt to read music... or more accurately learnt to notate the music I write so I don't forget it over time, as I have been doing with stuff I only wrote a couple of months back... I blame the wine... I've a good understanding of theory, I always write diatonically and I'm familiar with where the notes are on the fretboard, interval positions etc. I know where I am when I'm given a chord sequence to work to and the scale / mode shapes come naturally, however I've never learned to read music off the stave... This is probably due to having absolutely zero interest in playing anything written by someone else. However I have come to realise it would be very useful to be able to notate my own stuff and then sight read it back further down the line when I've forgotten it... I've ordered a copy of 'The Bass Guitarist's Guide to Reading Music - Beginner Level' and when it arrives I shall be off down the road of crochets and quavers... I am not to old to learn something new... Anyone else gone through this after years in the darkness? Rob

Seems as if everything has been pretty much covered already in this thread, going to throw my tuppence worth in anyway... Simple answer is I like both. My active basses give a deep zingy modern sound which sounds great in the studio or playing at home, however I find my passive basses fit in the mix much better when playing at full volume with other people. Having said that Its my personal opinion that the Wal is one bass to rule them all... although they don't really sound 'active' to me, more like a super charged passive if that makes any sense... probably not... I've confused myself let alone the OP Rob

I'll give it a go... always interested in custom basses. How many strings will the bass have? Rob

The originals band playing pubs experiment
CamdenRob replied to Low End Bee's topic in General Discussion
This ... plus the band are contractually obliged to set up in front of the door to the Gents toilet.
I played for a darts team years ago and one of the pubs we played at had the gents toilet door between the board and where you stood to throw... Who's idea was that... ridiculous... Rob -
I think they are pretty versatile, you can either have clank or clang...
What a pity, Rob. You must find a way to attend one of the bashes sooner or later - you'll love it
Yeah its a shame, I was looking forward to trying out some gear.... Might try and get something together in London... in a pub All the best for this though, I'm sure it'll be a great day. Rob -
I know the feeling. I've got quite a strong idea, but it's a bit too ambitious given there's only a week or so left (and I'm currently house hunting when not in work, so it's hectic on all fronts!). But I have a 'Plan B' that I might have time to work on if I pull my socks up. I'm also working on a new track with Mike (urb), which is going great. More on that later...
I can sympathise, I'm at the other end of a house move, moved in last week... chaos. I regularly check your soundcloud anyway so I'll see the new track with Mike when you put it, looking forward to it. Rob

I've got the inlaws coming over so I'm out I'm afraid.... probably for the best I'd only end up trying a load of stuff that I wanted to buy afterwards... Rob -
Do they not do a white one? or was that one of last years ones? Rob

I have the Six string version in the same finish. In my opinion its an excellent instrument. Plays great and sounds great, weighs a bit though... I reckon its the best sixer in this price range, either this or the yammy 1006j. Also mine says 'crafted in Indonesia' on the back of the headstock so this one is obviously from a different factory so might be a different quality all together... Fairly safe bet I'd say, especially if its going cheap. Rob

Can't seem to find the time this month... and I usually only spend a couple of hours anyway! Hopefully get a chance in the next couple of weeks. Will listen to all the entries once the voting starts. Rob

No worries, Alice and I thoroughly enjoyed your gig last night, would have loved to have hung around a bit, sadly had to be in work at six this morning.. Love the way you use that volume pedal to fit in with the violins, it sounds great and very musical, gives your bass a cello like attack on those parts of the songs... also Kit is exceptional... Next time your playing round our way we'll get a few mates down to watch. Rob

Best way to tell the wife..... ' I've just bought a new bass !'
CamdenRob replied to Tullfan's topic in General Discussion
what concerns me is that this thread is not a joke... My wife doesn't question my basses. I don't question her surfboards. It's called being adult, surely?
This. -
That's not so unusual. Dimmer switches and poorly suppressed fluorescent lights are common culprits, as were CRT TVs.
It was a dimmer switch actually... and a ropey looking one at that... Rob

In my old flat my bass used to buzz loudly when I turned the lights on... Rob
