1. Mrs CamdenRob says its a goer so barring any last minute disasters we'll be there. I'll aim for 9 to be on the safe side. See you there. Rob
2. Depends on the missus to be honest. Its just round the corner for me so seems like a good way to spend an evening. Don't worry about the guest list we'll just rock up tomorrow night. Cheers Rob
3. Can you pay on the door for this do you know? Rob
4.
Only they aren't as 'indispensible' as I thought.
Whilst its not quite the same, I had a similar 'indispensable' realization when moving house last weekend. When we were packing up boxes and boxes of books we came to the realization that the last time we had touched them is when we moved them into our previous house... they had just sat on the shelf for years. As nice as they are to have, We are obviously not getting any use out of them and as most are reference books all that information is now on the internet... in a convenient searchable form. I need to let this stuff go, less clutter in my life can't be a bad thing. As you say... The time has come... Rob
5. Thanks gents, 50/50 then... perhaps I'll put half of them back in... Rob
6. The Gallery is a bit of an oddball... It is undoubtedly unfriendly but they do have by far the best selection of gear, miles better than anywhere else in London. Wunjos is very friendly but just stocks your standard fender / warwick type thing. When I go to a bass shop I like to try out unusual and different basses, we've all played a fender P, its nice to try out the odd sadowsky to see what all the fuss is about... I'd rather just put up with the frosty atmosphere in order to try out the best gear. I'm not easily offended, It makes no difference to me if a guy in a shop wants to be my friend, I care if he lets me try out the best selection of gear in London. Rob
7. I have acquired a 50th anniversary jazz from which I have obviously removed the nice looking but completely impractical chrome pickup covers. What's the general consensus with what to do with the holes? I've no problem leaving them as is but I notice some people put the screws back in once you've taken the covers off? Is there any advantage to this, maybe less likely to snag them? Rob
8. Nice bit of kit this... Hopefully it'll still be here when finances allow... Rob
9.
Did you get one that's good for metal then?
I did, it's an important characteristic that my laundry basket is suitable for metal... occasionally the codpiece needs a wash. Rob
10.
Whichever colour fades into the background best, I would imagine?
Oh no apparently there are many different facets to consider when buying a laundry basket; size, durability, appearance, weight, is it good for metal etc.... Rob
11.
It's the same with the current mrs discreet. I burble on excitedly about my most recent acquisition... ...to which the response is always the same: Me: Wow, check out my new [bass/amp/cab/strap/lead/pre/what-have-you] !! TCMD: (Not looking up from iPhone) That's nice, dear.
That's a familiar sounding scene... To be honest I do the same when faced with a conversation about which coloured laundry basket we should buy... Rob
12. Cracking deal this... wrong timing for me... Rob
13.
This is very true. How do you know though whether or not you are looking like a tosser? (By which I mean how does 'one' know, not you personally Rob )
That's easy, I always look like a tosser...
It's funny how you can see one person on stage doing a load of moves and looking cool. Another person doing similar stuff looks completely naff. Why is this? I think it is something to do with whether you are a 'taking' or a 'giving' performer. The 'taking' perfomer is saying 'look at what I'm doing. Isn't it clever? Doesn't this make me look cool?' S/he is the one that inevitably ends up looking naff. The 'giving' performer is saying 'Look at what I am doing to give you a good time and make you happy/excited/thrilled/scared. Hope you are enjoying it as much as me'. S/he is the one that gets the crowd on his/her side. That's my theory anway. Based on what I learned at my mother's knee (she was a raging luvvie of course).
Exactly this... never really thought of it that way but this pretty much sums it up really... Rob
14.
I was going to offer some 1M lengths of pedal-board velcro as raffle prizes this year. Sniff. Now ... well, I just don't know. I think I need to go and have a lie-down.
I could actually do with some pedalboard velcro.... that sounds like a reasonable raffle prize to me... Is there a pub near the venue? Hopefully I can make this one depending on what Mrs CamdenRob has planned, I think it's this or the Harry Potter studio tour... which I have been assured is not just for kids... Rob
15. There is a very fine line between putting on a show and looking like an arrogant tosser.... Rob
16. I must set up a feedback thread, done a couple of deals just never got round to it. Rob
17.
Absolutely. It's no way to be in a relationship (I believe, although I could hardly call myself an expert) to have to hide anything from your partner. If the bills are paid, and you have some spare cash that isn't earmarked for something else, what's the issue? Sometimes, you just have to treat yourself, don't you? I'm the kind of person that would run something by somebody, but unless they had a good serious reason for me not to spend my money on something, I'd likely ignore their "Don't buy it" pleas. Although I rarely do go out and buy a new instrument now. Last one I bought was a £200 Lag acoustic guitar (which is fantastic value for money, might I add), and that cost less than my iPad. The guitar is more fun
Yeah your right. I don't even run stuff by her to be honest, I'm not spending money we have aside for something else. I'd never dream of buying a bass instead of paying the council tax or anything. I might mention a new purchase in passing during a normal days course of conversation, she usually indulges me by listening to me wittering on about bass playing. She did raise an eyebrow when the topic of my Wal order came up and the subsequent price. But that's only because she couldn't understand how a bass could cost that much, not because she would try and stop me buying it.
From what I can see, it seems more prevalent in some circles than in others. Guy I know knows a lot of blokes, and he has enormous amounts of stories about exactly that, or rather: what happened when they were found out. In his circles, it seems all the blokes do it, and they all know about everyone's doing it. That was new to me.
From time to time I'm a bit guilty of thinking that everyone thinks and acts like me and my immediate friends and family. You are of course right, there are all sorts in the world and a good few of them play bass, some of them will hide (or feel they have to hide) bass purchases. I personally would never entertain the thought of clandestine bass buying and I'd never have a partner who would try to control what I spent my money on like that, I think its a bit weird... Anyway I'm being a killjoy... back to 'buying them all the same color' advice and so forth. Rob
18. I understand most of this is tongue-in-cheek, I've had a good chuckle reading through these, but seriously, do people actually hide stuff like this from their partners? I just buy whatever I like... There is no logical reason for anyone to get upset about what you spend your money on. We both pay our share of the rent, bills, food etc. I spend my spare cash on basses (amongst other things), she spends hers traveling the world... The story earlier in this thread about the guy having to hand over £1600 as the equivalent of his bass spending is ridiculous. If my missus said that to me I'd be gone by the time she put her hand out... Rob
19. Serious Wal GAS at the moment... Got a quote for a sixer with a Purpleheart top, its the 17 Month wait that's even more painful than the price... Generally though what I want changes on a daily basis, given the choice I'll take one of everything please... except a ric cause they're pants... Rob
20. I have a G&L Tribby if you would be interested? plus come cash your way obviously? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/210457-gl-l-2000-tribute-blueburst-l350/page__st__20__p__2199047__hl__blueburst__fromsearch__1#entry2199047 Rob
21. I'd have thought the best course of action in a band like that was to set the beat loudly and solidly yourself... the others should be playing to you really. Rob
22. Playing bass.
23.
Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls was the first song, I worked out and, played.
+1
