1.
Do I just try and sit back, provide some solid bass lines and have more of a "supportive role"?
Naah I reckon wailing solos played on your knees, or maybe some foot on monitor action...
2.
The only recommendation I would take seriously is from someone who has made a successful claim on their instrument insurance policy.
Very much this... These insurance threads crop up fairly regularly but I've still not heard of a BCer who's gear was nicked / smashed up by a drunken oaf and managed to successfully make a claim?
3. I tried one of these out at GuitarGuitar in Camden last week, same model, same colour. Looked and played absolutely fantastic. Really stood out among all the basses they had out including numerous Fender Custom Shop instruments. If you've got the one I tried you're a lucky man... and you've probably saved me some money...
4. It's not hard to sell a bass if you need too for some reason; cash for another bass, cash for rent or whatever... The thing too avoid in my experience is selling a bass because you think you should... too many basses, can't justify them all etc. That always leads too regret.. I can think of several basses I would gladly pay the price I sold them for to have them back.
5. I'm firmly in "Playing to three people on multi-band original nights" type bands and 99% of the time I just take my bass and DI straight into the PA.
6. I've had an Indonesian made Spector Legend and a couple of Korean made G&L L2000s. Having not played their pricier direct equivalents I can't offer a comparison but the "entry level" basses I had were universally excellent...
7. I haven't been around much on BC these last few months so have missed this... It's a shame to see the noodle bar fall into disrepair, but to be honest I don't think the interest level warrants the time put in to manage it with the voting threads etc. I liked the concept, simple, unaccompanied bass. Press Record - Play Bass - Press Stop Maybe it's time will come again...
8. Having said that, if I needed the gig for money I'd play / wear anything in whatever style the band leader wanted...
9. I have a character flaw (among various others) where the more I am told I must do something (outside of work) the less likely I am to do it... I've left a few projects where I've been expected to play a certain bass... Being asked to play a bass other than the one you have chosen seems to have as much to do with asserting the authority of the person asking as it does anything to do with the aesthetics of the band. If you cave in it's basically saying someone else's opinion of what your playing is more important that your own... and what follows that? "Hey mate maybe you should try playing that bassline like this instead..."... its a downward spiral...
10. Phwoarr look at that...
11. I lusted after an SWR rig at the time...Think I actually had a picture of one on my bedroom wall... But alas being 13 and not having rich parents a decent amp was a long way off...
12.
Maybe it was user error causing the tone issues with Carlsbro stuff.
Naah... they were just sh*t... 😐
13. My carlsbro viper was awful... underpowered farty monstrosity... although it was miles better than the HH bass baby it replaced. The HH was so bad and I became so enraged with it I ended up smashing it to pieces in the garden with a sledgehammer... i think the speaker magnet is still stuck to my parents radiator. 😐
14. Early 90s... Westfield Bass (awful) - cable (also awful) - Carlsbro Viper combo (even worse)
15. Out of interest, what could a potential unsavoury character actually do with my national insurance number?
16. Bass (Wal) - Cable (OBBM) - Amp (Epifani) - Cables (OBBM) - Cabs (Barefaced One10s)
17.
...Elite jazz. Massively impressed, really enjoyed playing it. But £1800?! Hmm. My custom shop jazz leathers it up and down the street, but it's a great bass.
I tried one of these last weekend; a Sunburst / Maple fiver, it was a wonderful bass regardless of what it says on the headstock. Very nearly went home home with it...
18.
...sadly I'm not due north London way for quite some time, if I am up that way I shall drop you a PM and see if we can maybe meet. Would you say dropping them an email is the best course of action?
Just drop me a PM on here if you happen to be in the area, I always pick them up as it's linked to my emails
19. I was the least cool out of my group of friends when we formed a band when I was 13...
20.
Paging Camden Rob.
I'm here... sorry was on another call... I have a Moollon Classic P which I ordered last year. Faded Sonic Blue with a Mint guard... Like you I had P GAS but wanted something a little different. Not sure how much I read into the bumpf about emulating Pre CBS Fenders but it is an exceptional instrument. Light, beautifully crafted, with a lovely purity and resonance to the tone. I'm also very fond of the clay dots and dark ebony fretboard... it has a wonderful figure to it. They are made in small batches so you have to wait a little while for them to be put together post order. Very easy process though, communication was great throughout. When I ordered mine (around this time last year I think) It was $2299 and then the import duty on top, so they are not cheap but it's a wonderful instrument and I don't begrudge a penny of the cost Interestingly of all the basses I've been through over the years it's this one that has generated the most interest by far... I've had Three BCers over for a test drive, chat and cup of tea over the past year. You'd be more than welcome to come and try it for yourself if you find yourself at a loose end in North London of an evening any time soon...
21. As mentioned above I don't think GAS ever really goes away... It's not really based on having "The One" either I don't think. I've tried to justify my bass gear by having different types (Wal Fretted and Fretless sixers for the main body of what I do and a P and a J for a more traditional option)... Trouble is with all those bases covered I still GAS for other stuff. I tried out an Fender Elite 5 string jazz the other day and now i want that even though I have no use for it whatsoever
22.
Simple tbh, its my only hobby, i love bass guitars and im building up a collection slowly.
Quite... no justification needed, buy whatever the hell you like How about a vintage Tokai Hardpuncher?
23.
In my memory 1982 is not that far away...
I was born in 1982 😕
24.
Anyway it looks like they're re-imagining the Shergold line as a kind of hipster tw*t accessory...
This is something people seem to be accusing me of more and more often recently... To be fair I do have a large beard and selection of flannel shirts, but in my defense I have a job, no trust fund and my girlfriend doesn't wear her grandmothers clothing...
25. They are not for me but each to their own, It's your money spend it on whatever you like What surprises me is not that we have reliced instruments but just how many of them there are... it now seems to be the norm. I popped into the new GuitarGuitar in Camden last week and as expected they have a reasonable range of mostly Fender instruments. However I reckon well over half were reliced... almost all the custom shop basses had a light relic. .. Not a lot of options at the higher end for someone who likes their basses to look new. Also as a side note, the reliced Sandbergs looked awful... the Fenders were much more sympathetic with an genuinely aged instrument.
