TB is the Uni Library. BC is the local.
What as in it smells of old people and was rendered obsolete by the internet a decade ago?

It's your bass, do whatever you like with it I always thought the relic thing was to give the impression of an older, naturally road worn instrument. To the best of my knowledge Mayones basses haven't been around long enough for any of the wear and tear associated with years of gigging to be apparent?
Although I've become aware of the trend recently, also 'it's funny 'cos it's true', and as a bit of a convert I hope Twincam might at least consider playing adjustment before parting with hard-earned cash.
Wise words...
PS CamdenRob: could you please link to this noodle comp whereof you speak?
I most certainly can. http://basschat.co.u...60#entry3034729 It's essentially a motley collection of isolated basslines (under 60 seconds) played, recorded and submitted by a few BCers, which are compiled into a vote at the end of each month... It's working title was the "Play any old s**t challenge" and to be honest that pretty much sums it up
That was my first thought on seeing this thread. I played bass professionally in the late 70s/early 80s, and after a few decades' rest from it came back a couple of years ago in a fun covers band. Although the gear I have now is mostly better than what I had back then, what's really made a difference for me this time around has been in right hand fingerstyle technique: in the last 6 months I've started playing mostly between the two pickups (also Nordstrand Big Singles as it happens) instead of over the neck pickup or further to the left; also I've started to use the 'floating thumb' technique as opposed to thumb resting on the neck pickup or bass body. It's also worth noting that I used to have the strap quite short for that elbows stuck out look in a vain attempt to come across like a serious player - it occurred to me this time around that all it achieved was to put arms, wrists and fingers under a certain amount of default tension, a thing of the past now now I have a longer strap which puts my left forearm nearly parallel to the floor. The cumulative effect has been to give my tone a nice added definition while retaining all the thump I need, plus offering considerably more damping control, articulation and comfort, notably on the funkier and/or quicker tunes - Duran Duran's 'Rio' is an example of one where this has helped. Although what works for me might not help you, Twincam, I was surprised at how much difference it made - might be worth a try before you spend good money on changing gear.
You are of course correct... technique, muting, ghost notes etc have a huge influence on the sound we produce from our instruments. I'm enjoying listening to the isolated basslines in BCs new monthly noodle comp, as it's interesting to hear how different players can sound so different. I'm going to have to admit to my original post being of the facetious variety though... there is a long running BC mantra of "it's all in the fingers" implying that nothing else matters, when obviously different basses amps, strings etc all sound completely different.

I like the Wal club on there, met a couple of guys in there that I've ended up staying in contact with outside of Talkbass I've not posted outside of the Wal thread though, so I've no idea what it's like as a community. I already spend all day here anyway... there aren't enough hours in the day for me to get involved in another bass forum

You don't really need an amp... or a cab.. or even a bass... It's all in the fingers

Here is my offering this month... I was going to do a bit of slap, then a walking bass type thing, then a riff style ditty, but in the end I ended up doing this little simple melody I came up with earlier in the month. It's actually part of a bigger piece with several layers, but I decided against the looper... https://soundcloud.com/robhartley-1/noodle-03wav Moollon P bass with TI Flats, finger style with tone set about a quarter from the bass side, straight into a Boss BR-80 with no EQ or effects.

I would love a vintage bass, just because of the history and the fact that I'm a bass guitar enthusiast. But I'm happy playing modern versions of those classic designs for the projects I'm involved with. Really not that much has changed over the last 60 years with regards to bass design.
I thought you meant you were the proud owner of the first ever P Bass for a minute there.
Yes me too...

I was going to do some myself but I shall spare you all for another month as I've got something else cooking... Great bounce and rhythm on this one... I like slap bass... I'm sorry but I do!

Is it possible to go and still have a pub lunch or is that the choice? .... Pub lunches are pretty good.

Mine was a Squier P bass in white with a tort pickguard. It was awful in every imaginable way and I nearly fell at the first hurdle of bass playing because of it... Got a Westfield pj cheapie about a year later which was also crap but infinetly better than the Squier...

As I'm sure will become apparent in the following replies, OBBM is your man a fellow Basschatter, drop him a PM and he'll sort you out whatever you need. Top end quality at a fair price.

Thanks guys, food for thought

How does it work? Do you have to order through a dealer or direct? Presumably the prices all have vat and import duty on top? Thanks chaps not buying anything, just weighing up some options
https://soundcloud.c...ki-boyes/doodle My entry for this month - nothing special, just a little melodic thingy.
That's really nice... The modulation (chorus? Flanger?) is perhaps a little heavy for my tastes, but it's a lovey piece. Can see some vocals over than and it wouldn't sound out of place on the trendy coffe shop circuit round here. Good stuff
I liked the black, I think I liked the mint as well but sitting here in the dark I thought it made the bass take on a pinkish hue? I just showed Mrs2611 the mint picture and asked what colour the body was, she said pink as well
Yes it's a trick of the light... None of the pickguards are quite the colours they look in those photos. I needed to take the photos outside really but a downpour prevented that unfortunately. The body is quite a pure white, although even in reality it looks a little pink with the mint guard on...
Take a plate with you, they'll see you right. And have a beer in the fridge for after for when you tell the Mrs how hard it was.
Mrs C is far more practical with things like this than I am... I might ask her to do it and then tell you guys I did it myself so I don't lose the man points....
It's one of these
Ha! Much obliged, I'll pick one up from town tomorrow...
