Horrendous schoolboy error with a new bass
CamdenRob replied to police squad's topic in Bass Guitars

I have different basses for different occasions. A Wal for my original projects where I have the freedom to sound however I like, a P bass for when I need to sound like I'm using a P bass (The Wal cannot sound like a P bass) and a fretless for when I need that sort of thing Versatile basses are obviously appealing (and a much better financial choice than multiple basses) but it's important to make sure the bass is offering you what you want from each of it's options and not ending up giving you an average approximation of the sounds your looking for... Does the P pickup solo'd really sound like a P? Does a J pickup or active humbucker really give you the J or Ray sound to the same standard a decicated instrument would?. Sometimes basses that try to be all things to all people can end up not being anything to anyone...
-
Impossible to advise without a budget to aim for... but as others have said Wal, Rob Allen etc. are exceptional fretless basses and worth a try if you're looking for the ultimate. ACG can offer you an instrument of a comparable quality to anything else out there at a very competitive cost and with the multicoil pickups as an option, IMO you'd have to spend over twice as much to get any more bass for your money... and any "improvement" at that end of the market is purely subjective anyway.

I've no interest in football and It is out of order to have the gig cancelled at the last minute like that, but it really comes down to how many people want to go to the pub to watch the football Vs how many people want to go to the pub and watch a band... Although it's not something I've ever been involved with, I assume the pub covers scene is all about numbers through the door and pints sold at the bar? If the pub can sell more pints showing the football on a given night then it's a no brainer really... I'd show the football if it was my pub... I would have checked beforehand and not booked the band though, that's just common sense.
-
I wouldn't worry about it. My isolated bass tracks are full of squeaks, zings and buzzes... None of it is ever noticeable in the final mix

Comfort strapp for me, wide and grippy

Rightho chaps, just about made the deadline this month... I've had a piece in mind to record for this months noodle comp and intended on waiting for my new P bass to record it, but when the new P arrived and I plugged it in this came out instead... I think it sums up the joy I feel when playing this new instrument and my renewed appreciation for the P bass in general https://soundcloud.c...-1/noodle-02wav Moollon P Classic straight into a Boss Br-80.

Right, must get me noodle recorded today...

No bass GAS 😯 You feeling alright there? I know what you mean though, when you buy a great instrument it's natural to think "this is it for me". Partly because we want to be free from the ridiculous and expensive merry-go-round that is GAS! ... You are never truly free though 😐 A relapse is but one thread away...
-
Thanks chaps yes it does look very light in those photos... I'll try and get some done outside in natural light today, weather permitting. I haven't put this down since opening it up yesterday. The shear simplicity and ease to play of a good p bass is a joy to behold... It's just so damn playable... I have a set of la bellas I took off my fretless Jazz in favour of rounds kicking around somewhere, so I'm going to put those on today for even more thump
Ashtrays would look spiffy on that, but I see there are no holes drilled for them, so... maybe not!
Yes I wasn't sure if I was going to get ashtrays or not... probably shouldn't go drilling holes in it to add some, i'd definitely do that wrong

Not quite everything, I have a G&L L2000 Tribute out of shot, but this is my current setup Three custom builds (Moollon P, Peterbuilt fretless J and Wal Mk3 fretted six), Glockenklang Blue Soul and Bergantino CN210. Awaiting a new build fretless Wal sixer around this time next year and looking for a berg CN112 to complete my set up, covering all my needs and leaving me GAS free... ... yeah right

Having finally negotiated paying the customs charges and managed to retrieve the package from my local Parcelforce depot over a bank holiday weekend, I have an NBD! The bass took one day to get from Mollon's workshop in South Korea to Heathrow, then a further two weeks to get to me with the usual HMRC / Parcelforce fannying around... This is a Moollon Classic P. For those who are unaware these are only available to order direct from the factory and are made to order. They are not full custom builds, but rather Moollon have a small number of models from which you can choose and then they build each instrument from scratch and you can specify finishes, pickguards etc (ala Wal). The classic range (Ps and Js available) are copies of pre-CBS fenders, this one is a copy of a 57 P. Everything has been painstakingly researched to use as closer materials as possible to match Leo's original creations. Specs from Moollon Body wood : Alder Neck wood : Hard Maple Fingerboard Wood : Macassar Ebony With 7.25\" Radius Frets : Medium Size Nickel Silver Bridge : Moollon Vintage Style with Spiral Steel Saddles Tuners : Moollon Vintage Style Nut : Bone Pots : CTS Jack : Switchcraft Pickups : Moollon Inlays : Clay dot Finish : Nitrocellulose Lacquer Controls : Volume/Tone You will notice the Ebony board which is obviously not period correct, apparently this was chosen due to a decreasing availability of dark Rosewood in their part of the world. It looks really good IMO in contrast against the sonic blue body. All the Fender copy stuff aside, this bass is an exceptional P bass... It is simple, light, balanced, beautiful to look at and beautiful to play. The tone control goes from vintage thump to a clear growl at the top end, remaining usable right through the spectrum. Yes it's a P bass... there are many like it but these are a bit special Full price including import duty, VAT etc came in at a little over £1700 which is not bad for a hand built instrument. I wanted too try something a bit different and am very pleased I took the risk.
-
The price something is listed for and the price it actually sells for are two very different things... ...a number of sellers are overly optimistic.
Nice set up Rob. Is the amp a 230V version can clarify please? ATB Jon
Hi Jon, Yes it's a full uk 230v version. Sounds absolutely huge, but beyond my needs really... Also I want more bass stuff and selling this kinda justifies it.. Well it does to me anyway.
I''m 56 and recently reinvented myself as a bass player. I've played enough pub rock and lounge jazz as a guitarist in the past so was looking to do something original for a change. No chance in a small town, and no audience either. After looking vainly for opportunities I realised I had to do it myself, set a goal (a partly-improvised performance including modern dance), found the right people, and it's happening this May as part of an arts festival. Wish me luck! I realise this may not be for everybody, but there are many ways to entertain with music that don't go down the covers band route.
Great stuff... If it's not out there and you want it, set the damn thing up yourself... Good luck come May
