1.
Cheers for that! I'm mainly into heavy metal, but I'm not averse to other music. I want to learn theory, reading music being a bonus (hence the Hal Leonard), I just hope to be able to learn things like scales and whatnot in relation to music I relate to. I'm not sure how realistic that is?
I'm also a big metal fan and I also love my theory... The trouble is the two very rarely go together The metal songs I write for my band are in a given key (i tend to use modes of the harmonic minor for metal) with chords related to each other.... this is the exception though as the vast majority of metal is written by bolting together totally unrelated riffs... This makes it very difficult to write harmonically interesting basslines and is basically why so many just double the guitar riff.
2. Don't think I've ever earned £50 for a gig I'm more; Somebody who loads £10000 of equipment into a bus to travel a mile or so to earn nothing
3. I thought everyone just used it to host stuff for linking to from elsewhere online... kinda like photobucket. Didn't really think there was much else to it.
4. This looks good for £350; But I couldn't live with this; Whats wrong with just having the Sire logo on it?
5. I have a six string bass, class D amp, lightweight cab and until I joined basschat had never heard anything by Jaco or Geddy...
6.
Funny, but when it comes to projects I like the up-front honesty of a natural finish, as you may have noticed
Indeed... they all look great as you've got them now!
7. The Jazz at the top is a bit of a looker I'd be tempted to get it finished in a trans finish of some sort... the grain is lovely
8. If you're not concerned about weight, there are some great bargains to be had out there for second hand Peavy / Trace Elliot type stuff. Silly money really for quality kit that will make your bass sound like a bass instead of a honky parp. ... unless you get one of the tiny trace commando things I used to have... then it will definitely sound like a honky parp.
9.
In my day metal was long hair and tight trousers. Then it became short hair and baggy trousers. These days I'm not sure what it is
Yes indeed... similar situation myself. Before my time metal was long hair and tight trousers. In my day it became short hair and baggy trousers. These days I'm not sure what it is
10.
I'm down to 2. I only really use one of them though.
I only use one at a time...
11.
Why quit? Take a break.
I have to agree with this sentiment... No need to make a big dramatic decision to quit playing, just stop doing it if it's no fun and start again if you fancy it
12.
@CamdenRob My new place has a cupboard over the stairs could hold 36 cases easy.
Great stuff... Are you trying to get down to 36, or planning an extension / shed for the rest of the collection?
13. 2/10...
14. What bass are you looking to put them into? i'd say Wal pickups are unsurpassed for fretless but they are not commercially available outside of Wal basses. Asides from that, the only other comment I can make from personal experience is that I have a set of DiMarzio DP123s in my new peterbuilt fretless jazz and they sound great clear and deep with plenty of burp.
15.
So how exactly do I go about seeking a starter band or any tips in general for finding a band. Do I have to write novice bass player seeks band. Zero idea how I would go about this. What to say.
It's quite easy... You put an advert up on Gumtree detailing what your looking for, type of music, commitment level etc. Explain everything about the sort of project you'd like to be involved in, location etc. Make sure you put "bassist available" or similar in the title so it shows up when people search. ...then you spend weeks wading through hundreds of emails from kids in metal bands with "industry contacts" until you find something suitable
16. Price drop to £1500 as I've seen something I'd like Collected from Camden NW1 or I can meet at a train station a reasonable distance from London. Also, please do not offer me trades from mainland Europe... That is not a reasonable distance from London on the train
17.
I formed a band BEFORE I'd ever picked up a bass or guitar,,,ability is not required.
Me too... I got a bass to be in a band with some mates at school because all the cool instruments had already been taken...
18. Interests come and go over the course of a lifetime There is nothing to say that just because your losing interest now you'll feel the same a few years down the line. There is no point in forcing yourself to play, it's not compulsory... if it's no fun don;t do it I'd keep a bass under the bed and get on with other stuff in your life. I got my first bass for my 13th birthday and played relentlessly until I was about 21. Gigging, recording etc. even had a number of students in the latter years, teaching a few nights a week... Then I got a full time job (totally none music related) and stopped playing completely for ten years until a couple of years back when I thought I'd give it a go again. Couldn't be happier playing bass now it's a hobby for me and the gigs, jams, rehearsals, recordings etc are a welcome distraction from work.
19. I'm up to four now as well... selling two though.
20.
Saw Slipknot on Monday in Cardiff motorpoint arena. With Suicidal Tendencies supporting. Top gig and Slipknot's new Bassist has a few lovely Status basses..
I think they must have been playing in London somewhere yesterday as there were loads of kids on the tube with slipknot t-shirts on when I went home from work... It seems Metal is still very popular with teenagers Was great to see so many of them excited about seeing a band that play actual instruments.
21.
I think we are just lucky to have two such great bass builders to choose from!
Absolutely... It's great to have viable, competitively priced European alternatives to Fender for traditionally styled workhorse instruments.
22. I wonder how all this has affected Sandberg... Fender styles in custom colors at this price must have had an impact on them?
23. Great review as ever, it looks the business I love those cream control knobs and mini switches. ... although the fender logo looks like it came out of a poundland christmas cracker...
24. For home practice just the one SVT and 8x10 should do.
25.
Indeed, hence the stateside comment... Import taxes would add a slug on top of the price...
Yeah it's a cracking deal for someone in the US.
