1. Hi Guys, I know virtually nothing about effects and have need of some advice. I've started a new project that is essentially just big simple riffs with bass, drums and a vocalist. I am looking for something to sound enormous and heavy as a contrast to my clean sound. When I play guitar I'm a huge fan of the mesa high gain tube distortion type tone, but having had a flick through the sounds on my B1on to see what sort of thing I'm after, I'm finding the distortions a bit thin and metallic on bass. The fuzz seems to work best, but I'm a bit worried about it loosing so much definition the notes disappear behind a wall of noise, I also have it set to a 50/50 blend with clean otherwise I seem to lose all the bottom end. So I was going to buy a big muff and see how that went but I'm open to any other suggestions?
 2.
You nutter! These basses are amazing. I love mine.

Wish I could take it off your hands. This one is stunning!
Thanks chaps, can't say I'm overly concerned if it doesn't go, it's certainly not a chore having this brightening up the place
 3.
And also listened to camdenrob's and what I really liked was some of the nice note definition, that I assume is recorded direct? Could you get that definition through a cab, I think I would have trouble getting the seperation and lack of boom (even in higher notes) through my current rig unless I really eq'ed the bass out. I also liked the string noise, It was just at the right level too really add to it.
Thanks for the comments, I always appreciate anyone actually taking the time to listen to anything I've put up To be honest I much prefer the tone I get from my rig to that I've managed to capture here with my rudimentary (at best) recording skills A few factors involved in trying to get it as clear as possible; I played the piece right over the bridge pickup, almost on the bridge itself to cut down on the plumby ovetones. I also have Wal pickups which have a coil per pole piece, so essentially four mini pickups per string, which helps with the separation, and finally I'm kinda cheating by using a six string as those higher notes on the high C are well into guitar territory. Next month I think I'll just do a bass line something low down that actually sounds like a bass! Enjoying listening to everyone's efforts so far. There are some great players out there in BC land... It's interesting to hear different peoples techniques, I've heard some bits in these noodles that have inspired me to experiment with some different styles and techniques. You don't often hear bass in isolation like this where you can pick up on all the nuances, it's all good
 4. I have a set of these in my new peterbuilt Jazz. They are great pickups... Versatile too, I can get an almost p bass like thump from the neck pickup isolated, a nice growl from the bridge and classic scooped jazz bass with both full on. Looks like a good buy to me

Wal - B1on GK Amp Sim - Boss BR-80
 6.
I'll be starting my own cull soon.
Good idea... make room for some more basses
 7. I've recently cleared out a few basses, amps, cabs, effects etc. I still intend to get down to one fretted and one fretless Wal sixer when the fretless arrives, but I'm sure I will end up with a few others along the way. ...but i would like a decent P bass... and maybe a vintage jazz... perhaps a Wal fretted four... oh and a berg cn112 as well. ... why did I sign up here
 8. I don't really have a set style of bass that I like.. I like classic designs as much as I like coffee table basses There are a few features that instantly put me off a bass though: Single cuts, gold hardware, tort pickguards or signature basses spring to mind. Although I have seen basses with gold hardware, or tort pickguards that I thought looked nice... the same is yet to happen with a single cut design though.
 9. Sold Marleaux Consat Custom 5 - £1500 Will happily trade up to a Wal pro series, or trade up / down for vintage fenders (all original) I picked this beauty up a couple of weeks back as I was able to part trade my Roscoe fretless sixer against it and I suspected this might be a little easier to move on (although time will tell if that was a wise decision!) I have toyed with the idea of keeping it as it's such a beautiful instrument, but in truth I can't see any situation I would be using it over my Wal… So we have a Marleaux Consat Custom 5 with a Flamed Pear top over a Mahogany core. The bass is 9.2lb according to Mrs C's bathroom scales… Very comfortable with a slim neck, 18mm (adjustable) string spacing and a 45mm nut. The bass is mint… I cannot find a blemish on it. Bass is switchable active / passive with a 3 band EQ, blend and master volume. The preamp is very versatile and to my ears sounds like a Glockenklang. The bass has Delano pups specially made for Marleaux. Bass comes with a Marleaux gigbag, straplocks and the brochure etc. Bass will either be pickup from Camden NW1 or I can travel out to within a reasonable distance of London and meet up at a train station somewhere. I will not ship the bass. Only trades would be vintage, fendery and all original… essentially something I can sell easily to make up the value Although I am always interested in original pro series Wals, or a part trade with an original finish Shergold Marathon. You are more than welcome to pop round one evening and try the bass out, I have a well stocked beer fridge and can provide endless waffle about bass guitars if required... or in fact endless* waffles if that's more your thing . *endless in this case refers to a maximum of a single pack of supermarket quality waffles per visiting BCer. This offer is not available in conjunction with any other waffle related offers. Your statutory rights are not affected.
 10.
If it makes you feel better I'm gonna try and upload something on Friday. Weirdly I reckon I'll get a better sound using my ipad to record audio from an amp than I will directly into Reaper
Yes I think i might go for something similarly low tech... probably just use my phone camera
 11.
OK, so someone has to be first ninny – sorry Dad3353. This’ll take longer to read about than listen to. It’s a little thing I’ve had knocking about for ages. It’s in 7/8 and I call it Neve’s Lament because “Neve’s” is seven backwards. I usually play it through twice but that would take it past the one minute threshold. Recorded directly into the PC using Audacity Playing Bass number 1 – my 78 Precision https://soundcloud.c...in/neves-lament
Hooray a leader emerges! No soundcard at work but I will check it out tonight I'm tempted to upload mine that I did yesterday, but I haven't listened back to it yet to make sure it's not sh*t so maybe I'd better do that first...
 12.
I wonder how many other people are thinking the same...
What we need is a leader... Someone to proudly fly the flag for recording any old sh**e and submitting it for peer review.
 13.
Indeed. I'm sure it will be a shower of sss....onic excellence
Well I was noodling around with this in mind last night and may have recorded a little something to submit. ... didn't want to go first though in case no-one else entered and I ended up looking like a ninny
 14.
I'm going to leave this first one pinned in General Discussion to give it a bit more exposure. Subsequent 60 Second Challenges (assuming it proves popular) will be posted in the Rec' forum as per usual.
Sounds fair enough ... I await the deluge of entries.
 15.
Pinned!
Should we drop this thread in the recording forum? It seems a bit unbalanced to have the noodle challenge pinned to the top of GD and therefore more prominent than the actual compo comp?
 16. The only thing I know about him is that he uses one of those weird double strap things... ... he writes some good columns on no treble though, comes across very grounded and not "holier than thou" like a number of the columnists on there.
 17. I've had quite a bit of success with the items wanted forum both buying and selling.. as I have in the marketplace... this is definitely the place to do business with bass gear if you price competitively
 18. My parents never had to worry about losing their jobs as teachers I guess some of the stuff which has been privatized is effectively private sector anyway now so I expect those jobs are now in the same boat as the rest of us... Essentially anything where money matters is going to be looking to have it's wage bill as cheap as possible.
 19. What are the differences between them tonally?
 20.
I'm pathetic!
Me too
And here with my 1964.
What a beautiful pair... and unlike any of my basses, should you ever get bored of them they will be worth even more than when you bought them Vintage Fenders essentially pay you to own them
 21. cor I can see how that was difficult to resist
 22. ...also, surely this is OT?
 23.
Even then, especially recently I've known a lot of public sector workers whose jobs have gone down the Swanee.
Yes unfortunately, as with some of the larger corporations, when employee benefits pile up after years and years of increasing holiday days and statutory pay rises etc. employees start to look expensive and management then generally make everyone redundant under some "re-organization" rouse or similar then starts again with new cheaper employees.
 24.
Do jobs for life even exist any more?
They do if you work in the public sector or for a very large corporation.... but for most of us mortals no, not a chance.
 25. I have zero workplace benefits... like a great many people the companies I work for choose to get around all the "workers welfare" legislation by making us all work as limited companies, engaged to complete a specific task as opposed to actual employees. Therefore if we have any issues we would have to sack ourselves as we are the director and sole worker of our respective limited companies and technically our own employer. No holiday pay, no sick pay, no flexitime, on a weeks notice of contract terminiation and a minimum 50hr work week.. it is very much a case of "Do what we tell you or f**k off and we'll get someone else in to do it..." it's not all bad though as the money is good
