1.
The silver one looks great. I'd be going for that If I didn't already have my custom Jake on order. Literally cannot wait for it to turn up. I've got about another 2 weeks I think. The suspense is killing me. I can't wait for the couch photo.
The trouble is I like them all...
  2. Could maybe be a genre each month rather than a picture? or even a specific technique?
  3. I think initially the poll is a good idea to garner the amount of potential interest... The actual success of the idea would depend on the specific structure of what ends up happening. I don't think a prize is really required but I do think it needs to be a competition... A thread of unrelated noodles would just disappear into obscurity after perhaps some initial interest. To be honest I can only see it working if it's basically the same as the current compo comp (with a picture as inspiration for the piece) but with the limitations of 60 second, bass only tracks...
  4. All of the Glockenklang class D heads are available as a 2.7 ohm version as I believe are all the full fat ones too...
  5.
There's no way it can be done as a 'challenge' without some kind of criteria (picture or whatever) to work with.
Yes it would definitely need a focus point of some kind...
  6. I would also likely take part if it was in some sort of competition format
  7. I'm GASing for a P bass and one of these could fit the bill just nicely.... how to decide that's the real question
  8. I understand the difficulties in making it a competition but if it's just a "listen to my noodle" thread I suspect it will attract no interest whatsoever... I quite like the idea of a 60 second limit and some sort of competition, but as others have said it would be difficult without any picture or something to serve as a focus point and this is already catered for by the composition competition. It's difficult to see how it could work, but I think it's an interesting point of discussion... This is a bass forum after all and there may be a place for short bass only compositions
  9. There are basses made from pretty dense woods though, this beauty from Enfield is a rosewood top and back over mahogany... The vast majority of Wal basses are also mahogany cores.
  10.
Weight would be the thing I think. AFAIK it's the only wood that actually sinks in water - happy to be wrong about that, but even so it does tell you a lot about the density.
I read something somewhere about loggers having to lash ebony to some other less dense woods to float it down the amazon otherwise it would sink... Although my memory is hazy at best and it may not have been true in the first place...
  11.
If it involves any sort of 'inspiration' for the compositions, then we might as well stick with the existing monthly challenge as others have mentioned. There’s plenty of scope within the current format for people to enter bass only tracks (as Rob above has done^). Also, the production values of the entries don’t necessarily dictate their popularity with voters. We’ve had plenty of ‘winners’ whose tracks lacked polish but were packed with great ideas. So… I think this new challenge, if it’s going to be sufficiently different, needs to be much more simple and immediate:

60 seconds maximum
Bass only, no additional instrumentation
But... FX, click tracks and metronomes are all fine (just don’t tell Jeff Berlin!)
Play whatever you like, from any genre you like
No more complicated than that. Any other caveats and we’re better off just pointing people to the existing challenge with a bit of encouragement, as it’s already a sufficiently inclusive formula. I see this as being something for those times when you might be noodling at home, strike upon a catchy phrase/riff, and want to share it with others. No more complicated than that.
Are loopers going to be allowed? I guess it's not really a noodle, if it's layered up though....
  12. I think if it's going to have any legs, it'll need to be based on something (a picture or idea etc) otherwise as someone else said earlier it'll just be a play what you like competition and be pretty difficult to judge which submission is best in any reasonable way... I guess some rules will have to be set out about using effects / loopers etc... Or is the idea literally just bass - cable - amp and record a noodle?
  13.
Looks fantastic! FYI I just had a bass fretted by Jon Shuker and he was perfect. Well worth shooting him an email.
Yes fretting it was my original intention and as it has the side dots in the correct position for frets I was going to look into it. I didn't expect it to sound as good as it does though and as a result I have sold my Wal fretless (having a fretless sixer made at the moment) and this will serve as my fretless whilst I wait 37 years for the new Wal to be built... I am keeping an eye out for a suitable fretted neck in the classifieds, just to give it a go fretted anyway I'm not convinced the bass will be as good fretted. It has a tone very similar to an 84 jazz I had for a while and is very mid focused and growly... I prefer my fretted basses a bit more scooped and punchy.
  14.
As Fenders are mass-produced I'm fairly sure the relic work will have been machined. To do each one individually by hand would be prohibitively expensive. Custom Shop may be different, I don't know.
Yes I suspected as much... it must be quite hard to consistently relic a finish across hundreds of basses though.
  15.
Love it. The contrast between the yellow and the dark fretboard look amazing

It looks amazing. congratulations mate.
Thanks gents, I'm very pleased with it overall. Nothing ground breaking in terms of design here, it is a good solid jazz bass

    Best looper?

I had the ditto looper for a while but I had two units break on me... I have the boss RC1 now, and I must say I prefer it as it runs on batteries Depends if you want built in effects etc, if you just want a simple looper then the boss and the ditto are identical in operation.
  17. I've not owned a relic but I would imagine I wouldn't be that concerned about it gaining any extra superficial damage... I'd make sure all the important bits were kept clean and in working order, but what's a few extra dents and scrapes, if it's already covered in dings. I do wonder though (and I'm sure someone here will know) when Fender (for example) release a relic bass, is every instance of that bass the same? Do they have identical wear patterns and dings? If not surely that would add a whole other dimension to deciding which one you wanted, to get the one with just the right amount of wear for your taste?
  18. I don't really see the need for a further competition... You can submit what you like into the existing monthly composition challenges I've submitted bass guitar only tracks in the past Nothing to stop you plonking a phone in front of your cab, playing some riffs and submitting it... In fact on the rare occasion I've actually managed to get something together for the competition that's exactly what I've done ... besides if you do offer something up Dad will do a write up of your piece and everyone knows that's the main reason for entering anyway
  19.
That is friggin' sweet! is that an ebanol fretboard? or rosewood? The nut action looks nice and low. Is it touching the board?
it does look like ebanol in the pics doesn't it... It's standard ebony thought, nothing quite as far out for this build The nut is pretty low, the action is much lower than my other basses, but it's all good as its strung up with flats and there is no buzz or choking, so I'm happy
Coolest Fender style custom build I've seen in quite some time
It is very VERY yellow in real life.... I'm hoping it mellows a bit over time. Trouble now is, I want a faded sonic blue P bass... and Peter has enough parts for about 5 P basses already in stock,.So it's really just a case of choosing specs and waiting a couple of months... oh dear .
  20. So come on then chaps which one sounded the best?
  21. scrub this...
You could put an actual poll in your post
Look at this instead
Easy Answer from the 2013 Basschat survey
22.
So can we get a little poll going and see just who we are?
You could put an actual poll in your post I'm 33 but going on 70 for the record...
  23. The last place I was in where they passed a jug round definitely wasn't a music venue...
  24. Giggling hasn't been fashionable for ages... everyone knows the titter is the coolest way to express mild amusement.
  25.
It's been a while and a fair few changes, so here's my update. Apologies for poor light it's chucking it down outside.
Love the look of that Lakland.... great color + blocks and binding, lovely
