Question following CW Youtube viewing - Is CamdenRob wanting a Vanderklay or a Zon yet?
...I've only got as far as making a note to watch the youtube video, so no GAS as yet. I intended to check him out when I got home last night but I ended up eating curry and drinking beer instead I'll have another attempt tonight ... Although maybe I shouldn't watch it, the last thing I need is more stuff to GAS for
Hmm, interesting. I’m seriously considering the same thing (P bass classic in sonic blue with ebony board), and also in Central London. Let’s keep in touch – if one of us takes the plunge the other could try it out, and if the plunger doesn’t like it then the ditherer might take it off his hands.
Yes I think if my Roscoe sells, it'll be this or a new cab I've been thinking about... I'd be going for this exact one
Leo did the same. 'Authentic' Fender-type basses are made from mass-produced parts and assembled on a production line. They are not hand-built from scratch using exotic woods and esoteric high-end electronics. They're very simple! That's the appeal. And anyway, Allparts necks and bodies are second to none.
all true that... Looking forward to getting my hands on it
Love it. Love everything about it. Get a fretted Precision neck on it and sell it to me.

Probably a silly suggestion, but rather than buying a new neck for it, could you ask the chap who is building it to fret it? I'm sure he'd rather that happened than you not find it quite right for your needs.
I'm very tempted to put a fretted neck on it, but looking forward to seeing what it sounds like as it is first, as it seems a shame to lose the matching headstock. These are essentially built from Allparts necks and bodies, then Peter does all the finishing and electrickery bits and bobs. He's more a compiler of parts than a luthier... he has a keen eye for the details though and some of his finishes are wonderful, I like the little touches like the colored thumb rest. He sourced a matching leather strap from somewhere as well which is quite fetching.
That is very yellow indeed
Yes it is rather isn't it at least people will see me on a dark stage... whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen. Perhaps it will mellow over time...
I truth I'm not sure what to do with it... I have a fretless Wal for all my fretless needs, but I do have need of a fretted four, so I may source a block and bound fretted neck for it.
Like this one from Allparts maybe? Although it's £400 and I'd have to get someone to sort the nut out for me...
Here's a link. Sorry, I know this isn't a P Bass, but check it out if you like Moollon's sonic blue finish: https://www.facebook...&type=3
Lovely I am very tempted by the P bass I posted earlier in this thread.... very, very tempted

It appears that my Peterbuilt fretless, stack knob, opal yellow jazz is nearly ready Just a few more screws to put in, a final setup and she should be on her way to me by next weekend Very pleased with the aesthetic Peter says that the color is warmer in real life, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out considering I took a random punt on the color, I like the cream pickguard too. Passive, Dimarzio jazz pups and strung up with labella flats... I am assured much mwah is to be expected I truth I'm not sure what to do with it... I have a fretless Wal for all my fretless needs, but I do have need of a fretted four, so I may source a block and bound fretted neck for it.

Precisions - How do you justify having two (or more!)?
CamdenRob replied to jbasst's topic in Bass Guitars
ah no need to justify it, buy whatever you like... get three if you want. -
On another note, anyone see this on the Maruszczyk thread? Look familiar? Doesn't have the growl though... IMO.
Hi Rob et al! I'd advice you not to go for that 1996 sixer since maybe it still has a dead note on its fingerboard. I owned it a couple of years ago and it then came from its original owner in Germany, telling me that Pete Stevens had had a hard time with that one. It first had a fretless board which warped, so it was exchanged for a new one at the German owner's cost (!). The second board then showed a dead spot. I don't know about the exact current condition, but from the piccies it seems as if it's still the same fretless board with the dead note. Maybe Jens as the first owner could shed some light on that one? ta Oliver
Thanks Oliver That would have been very good to know if I had gone for it! I notice it has now sold... very cheeky not disclosing the replacement fingerboard...
BTW, I just spoke with Paul Herman to have my white 2010 Moby Dick MKII refinished in all black very soon - so the funky white will turn into a black rock machine w/ gold hardware - yeah!!
I have been on to Paul myself and ordered a fretless sixer with similar stained sycamore facings to the MK1 you had built and I was lucky enough to trade from you last year the plan is to go for a sonic blue stain... although I haven't completely discounted trans white yet... decisions to make in a few months time
Probably worth a punt if the new cab is a good bargain.
Yes most suppliers have slashed the price as there is a new berg neo series coming out... depending on what sells out of the bits I have up for sale, I might give it a go
I'm afraid not, the initial release will be 4 & 5 string sets only. My SR1206 will be keeping its EXL170-6 set for the time being!
No worries I always use prosteels at the moment anyway.
Just a heads up, we have limited beta test samples available. http://basschat.co.u...ario-nyxl-bass/
No six strings sets
...can you provide links or specs for the actual cabs ?. If you could hold fire for another identical cab then that of course takes all the guess work out of it.
Yes I did think about just getting another 210 but i think that might be overkill for my needs, I'd like the versatility of the modular setup so I could take various bits with me depending on the situation. Spec are: Current cab;

Woofer: 2-10” Neodymium Magnet Woofers
Tweeter: High Intelligibility CN Series Tweeter
Impedance: 8-ohms
Power Handling: 400W RMS
Crossover: Custom Phase-Coherent Crossover w/ Tweeter Control
Frequency Response: 40hZ – 15KhZ
Sensitivity: 99db @ 2.83v / 1-meter
Proposed addition;

1-12˝ Neo woofer
High intelligibility tweeter
Power handling: 350 watts
Custom phase-coherent crossover w/ tweeter control
Precision tuned
Frequency response: 40hz-15khz
Sensitivity: 98db @ 2.83v /1meter
Impedance: 8 ohms

It's fairly simple. The 'sound' of any instrument speaker is a result of peaks and troughs in their frequency responses. No speaker is truly even across the whole range so some sounds the bass produces will be emphasised whist others are washed out. Sometimes the very lowest and highest frequencies are so quiet they might just as well be missing altogether. the usual reason for mixing two different speakers is to get the best of both. However the troughs and peaks of one never line up with the troughs and peaks of the other so you can often end up losing the bits you like. Mixing speakers is a matter of trying things out without being able to predict the results, and that is irrespective of whether they are the same brand or different brands, they just have to be different. There's nothing bad about it, it's just a bit pot luck. some combinations work and others don't. It's an expensive way of trying to get 'the sound' though, better to find a speaker that does what you want and then get two if you want that sound but louder. There's a little bit of nonsense on Basschat about all this. A couple of designers on here selling their designs have made some broad statements which are then repeated by fans who love their products but without the deeper understanding of those who made the original statements. One word of caution though, there are a few technical issues about matching impedance, power handling and sensitivity which could cause problems. I'm really assuming that you would be mixing two 8ohm speakers of broadly similar sensitivity with each capable of handling at least half of the amps power.
Thanks for that Phil, much appreciated Sounds like I'd be better off getting a second 210 then... I was just wondering if the 112 would work as it's a smaller solution and would also give me the option of just using that for acoustic type gigs.
-
Opinions vary, and a lot depends on which speakers you choose to mix. One of my favourite rigs is my Compact (15" driver) with my Midget (12" driver). You're better off trying out the rig you plan to use and just deciding whether or not you like the sound. Alternatively, you can sit back and await the inevitable bloodbath that this thread will unleash.
Yes I only ask as with the new berg neo series coming out the old one (of which I have a 2x10) is going cheap and I quite fancied adding a 112 for the odd occasion I gig without PA support. I'm guessing there may also be issues with there being two 10s getting half the load and only one 112 there too though? I'm not really clued up on these things
-
I read something on here a little while back about not mixing speaker sizes in a rig, although I can't remember why that was considered a bad idea? Could one of the initiated put me right

Gigging bassists... how many basses do you own?
CamdenRob replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
I'm continuing on the path to two basses (one fretted, one fretless) one amp and one cab for all my playing needs I do however still want basses outside of those I need, so can never rule out "Ooo look at the shiny bass" purchases. -
Yeah I meant a fair price for a 5er, 6ers are rare, can't say I've seen many used appear for sale. Does look nice.
Yeah I don't imagine there are many fretless sixers in existence... 3 or 4 at most i'd guess.

I have so many musical blind spots it's probably better to say I am just musically blind... I have never heard of half of the "greats" and have absolutely no idea who half the people that get mentioned on BC are.
