Seems nearly impossible to come up with an original song name
CamdenRob replied to Behlmene's topic in General Discussion
Some of my favourites come from Yorkshire's finest 90s symphonic black metal band Bal-Sagoth's seminal album "Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule" featuring such snappy song titles as "And Lo, When the Imperium Marches Against Gul-Kothoth, Then Dark Sorceries Shall Enshroud the Citadel of the Obsidian Crown (Episode: VIII)" and "The Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire"... catchy stuff. -
This is why the Sansamp BDDI or one of it's offshoots is an almost ubiquitous bit of kit...
You must be a joy to be with on stage
oh i'm fine with band members, it's just the public I try to avoid... Anyway enough of the de-rail... My only advice for those attending next year is don't have a Sunday Roast at the pub around the corner... I nearly broke a tooth on an unbelievably hard parsnip last year
Ha ha! Just remember, Rob, that just because we are biased doesn't mean that we aren't 100% right! ;-) And who better to comment than those who love their Wals?
I've been trying to think of something negative to say about mine to give a bit of balance. Unfortunately the best I can come up with is that it would be a nice touch if the cavity cover was made out of the same wood as the back facing rather than black plastic... ... but that is literally it

4 Question You Would Ask A New Prospective Band
CamdenRob replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
I'm about to go for an audition tonight (covers band). I know the drummer and have depped in one of his former bands so know that he can at least play/keep time, so I'm reasonably confident the band will be OK as players (not a question as such as I haven't met the rest of the band). However I will want to know; 1. How often and where do you rehearse (individually and as a band)? I have no problems with members getting together in homes to iron out or busk new ideas but I won't travel 20 miles for a rehearsal where the band haven't picked up an instrument since last rehearsal. 2. Who owns the PA and if it is hired in what is the situation with gig money? I own my own bass gear inc' my own mic, mic stand, vocal monitor etc. I expect vocalists to have PA... some might find that unreasonable but IMHO it shows commitment. I presently own a vocal PA which I bought as my previous band was made up of friends where nobody was the lead singer; agreement was that I'd get £20 from each gig to put toward the payment of the PA. In hindsight it isn't a reasonable payment as the PA will take donkey's years to pay off but in the meantime I have a PA for my use. Regards money - it isn't a driving factor with me but I expect to get paid and I want a fair share of the fee. 3. How often do you intend gigging? I've been in bands where I've gigged every weekend (+weekday gigs as and when), sometimes doing Fri/Sat/Sun but those days are behind me and I now play for pleasure/enjoyment and don't want more than about 3 a month and if a band wat 1 every 2mths or back to my old routine, then it isn't for me. 4. Does everyone have their own transport for rehearsals/gigs? Sorry but I'm not about to get involved with being the free taxi service for the sponger in the band! 5. Are any of the band members in other bands? Not the limiting/deciding factor but if someone is in a band that is out gigging regularly and this band is their 2nd (or 3rd) string then chances are fitting in gigs to suit everyone is difficult, especially if members have shift work for day jobs. See what the responses are tonight!
That all sounds very sensible... you're getting all the business stuff sorted upfront, saves any arguments down the line. -
As with Trevor I am totally biased, so I'm not really the best person to offer an objective viewpoint. I definitely think they are worth the premium. With a lot of custom builders you are looking at aesthetic "improvements" over off the shelf instruments, but with Wal you are buying a unique sound that I have not managed to find elsewhere. ... anyway i've ranted and raved about these basses too many times already, I expect everyone is sick of it.

4 Question You Would Ask A New Prospective Band
CamdenRob replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
I just have one really and that's "Will I be in complete control of my own basslines?". I won't be a part of anything where I'm dictated to and told what to play. I am the bass player and I will write the bass parts, if they don't like them they can find someone more suitable That's the only music question I ask when joining new projects. There's some lifestyle stuff too like I won't be dropping everything for a three month tour of Gateshead... Any perspective band would have to understand my job is more important. ... also no bagpipes... -
Sid Vicious - undervalued bass innovator?
CamdenRob replied to upside downer's topic in General Discussion
Maybe, but after the first wave the whole thing became much more splintered into Oi/New Wave/Post Punk/Anarco Punk/ etc etc etc. There were factions and rivalries everywhere, but I don't think it's possible to put these into class bands as there were so many anomalies. In Newcastle there were serious rows between the veggie anarcho punks dislike of studded leather jackets on Discharge fans. And the Discharge punks loathing of the Exploited Barmy Army punks or punx. And the Exploited lot hating the Dead Kennedy's lot for being clever or something. And round and round it went
This is exactly what went on in the metal scene (although on a much smaller scale than punk obviously) when I was still young enough to be part of a scene... For people supposed to be into "alternative" music the bitching between the various subtly different sub generes was unbelievable. -
I'd go for #2, I like the swirl pattern on the forearm and control knob areas. This stuff is agonising though and you're better off not actually having a choice! Presented with any of those as a finished bass I'd be happy, but having the choice leaves you forever wondering if you've chosen the right one!

BRX has an extensive list somewhere... I'll have a look for it. *edit* Can't seem to find an upto date one...

Yeah as above really Bass at four o'clock is quite a large boost. I just run my EQ flat unless I have a problem with boominess in a certain venue then I'll tweak acordingly but only a fraction of a turn. I would think that if you have to use a huge amount of EQ there is perhaps something wrong with the source sound?
think I'll tag along cheers! Another stupid question, do people usually bring their own basses?
I took mine last year as I wanted to check out some Vanderkley gear with my own bass... Unfortunately this was a mistake as I then had a gigbag on the journey down to Olympia. Everyone could see I was going to the bass show and therefore felt the need to fire up a conversation with me on the tube about it. I guess for ordinary people this wouldn't be a problem, but as I hate interacting with other people and generally pretend I don't speak English when approached on public transport, it put a downer on the whole day...

Sid Vicious - undervalued bass innovator?
CamdenRob replied to upside downer's topic in General Discussion
The vast majority of the music buying / gig going audience are non musicians... They don't care how difficult something is to play, or how cleverly arranged it is, a large percentage aren't even that bothered about what it sounds like... For alot of people (especially the younger generation). The music people like (and just as importantly the music they want others to see them liking) is a fashion / lifestyle choice and the style is definitely more important than the substance. -
I have a gk mb200 and EA whizzy 10. It's tiny with deep, clean, tight bass from bedroom to small gig volume

I'm awful, I can't write lyrics or song titles... I have nothing to say or complain about. -
Scott Devine has some really good advice regarding GAS
CamdenRob replied to miles'tone's topic in General Discussion
I haven't watched the clip, but is this a case of "man who makes his living teaching bass says you should spend your money on lessons rather than gear"? Good gear will not make you a better player but I do believe it will make you sound better regardless of your ability... Well unless your sid vicious obviously 😐 -
How much time do you spend playing songs you'll never perform?
CamdenRob replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
Pretty much the same as BRX for me... All my playing time is spent writing bass lines for my bands or coming up with new compositions / playing improv over a chord structure. I never sit and learn someone else's bass lines. To be honest I very rarely listen to any of other people's music. -
Thanks guys We've already learnt quite a lot from the various feedback we've had, which was the point of putting this stuff out there really feedback is great as it can help you to think about things from a perspective you haven't looked at before and also its reassuring to hear people come out with the same criticisms we have ourselves. Heading into the studio again March time to spend a bit more time on fewer tracks and go for something polished to put out there and see what people think. Personally I'm tempted to go for one track recorded and mixed properly, then spend some money on a decent video...
